San Juan Hotels

Recommended Posts

None of the hotels in San Juan are really that close to the pier...most are about a 15-20 min cab ride...check out the San Juan ports of call board for lot's of great suggestions..

When we were there in 2008 we stayed in a Comfort Inn or Comfort Suites in Isla Verde..it was only a couple blocks away from the beach, shopping & restraunts..the hotel was about $80 a night back then..

None? I thought I remembered walking past several in Old San Juan.

Great debate within our group of eight (4 couples). With 8:30pm departure we all first figured that would be plenty of time to fly in that day to SJ from Minnesota. Then figured in February a snowstorm is not out of the question so I think everyoine is convinced we need a hotel for a night. Actually some of us are planning two nights ahead just to tourist around a bit as well as be on the safe side. Also figuring to book connections via the farthest south city available...not Chicago for sure. Can't recall the last time Mpls-St. Paul was closed for more than one day.

So hotel costs are a big research project for us as well.

FYI - the AOS and SOS use the Pam Am pier, which is on the other side of the port from OSJ. It isn't walkable from OSJ hotels.

Carnival uses the piers right in OSJ that you could walk to.

That said..we stayed at the Sheraton OSJ, and it was an easy cab ride to the Pan Am pier.

You can use Priceline and Hotwire to book hotels in San Juan. It is generally preferable to go for the best rate than focus on a hotel that provides complimentary shuttle service. You may end up paying an extra $50 to $100 for a comprable hotel to avoid a $25 or so cab fare.

The Holiday Inn Express is nice, and not too costly. It is within walking distance to a nice beach area and shops and dining as well.

This cruise, I am staying at the SOFO Casablanca hotel in Old San Juan. At $103 per night, it is a steal. The location is amazing. There is also a Howard Johnson in Old San Juan and I have heard good things about the Marriott, which is a bit more pricey. I recommend staying in Old San Juan if possible. It is not too far from the cruise pier (across the bay), and has great restaurants, shopping, and historical sites to visit.

Last July we stayed at El Convente. Used hotwire paying only $99 per night. Was easy tor ecognize as El Convente because it is a boutique hotel. that was the main reason we booked it. they had free wine & cheese tasting every evening. They did not skip on the wine. It was free flowing the entire hour. several choices of both red /white. It was the best part of our trip.

I also suggest trying Priceline. I've stayed at the Caribe Hilton, Sheraton Old San Juan and Intercontinental all for under $100 a night. No complaints about any of them and it's easy to get a cab to the pier from any hotel. If you go to the San Juan ports of call board there is a great thread about priceline.

Perfect for overnight stay. Not big, not fancy but clean and predictable. Has small pool and hot tub in courtyard area. Best of all it is within walking distance of the Avenida Ashford in the Condado district. I recommend a dinner at Cafe del Angel there. Avenida Ashford is getting to be very upscale.

Had to pull DW away from the Cartier window display, it was ruining my dinner.

Remember they charge a resort tax of about 20% over the quoted room

price.

From discussions with family members Caribe Hilton is nice property with nice beach and pool but is it's own little oasis. Food on the premises

is expensive. You'd have to take taxis to go anywhere.

Lots of people on our cruise stayed at the Marriot Stella Solaris also in the

Condado. This is a truly impressive place and might be worth a look at for the right price.

It's about a $18 cab ride plus $1 per bag for a couple from Holiday Inn

or Marriot.

Hope this helps.

Krillsister:

You said you stayed at the El Convento last July, How many months in advance of July did you find the El Convento showing up on Hotline?

I am just wondering about when I might expect it to show up so I can book it for early next year.

Thanks

This past February we stayed at Radisson pre-cruise, booked through Hotwire. For less money we booked Marriott Stellaris via Priceline for one night post cruise. Radisson was ok..

in walking distance of many restaurants. Marriott was a few blocks away and was amazing! We had a corner room with balconies with an oceanview on one side and a city view on the other. We took taxis to and from the port. The prices are set, but they do charge $1 per bag.

Wow, what a great map. We stayed at the Condado Plaza and loved it. We walked to town one day, about 3 miles and cabbed it back. It was a very nice location if you don't mind being a few miles from the pier.

Good to know, the only time I cruised into San Juan was on Voyager out of Miami in '06.
