Smoking Passengers On The Veendam or Lack Thereof

Hello Everyone,

I just came back from the 5/16 Bermuda cruise and I am happy to report that the smokers onboard the Veendam were few and far between. They were respectful about where they smoked, even on the outside decks. Our cabin had no odors whatsoever and some friends of ours told us that they had no smoke smells on or around their balcony. The one and only time that I smelled smoke was when I got one tiny whiff of cigar smoke up on the sports deck. In fact, when we were sailing away from Hamilton, there was a man standing next to me and I never noticed that he was smoking until he went to put his cigarette out. I am very sensitive to smoke so this was quite remarkable.

Don't you know that you can't say anything good about a smoker. There are people lurking this thread just waiting to throw them overboard and the slightest whif of smoke sends them into absolute fits, comas and the need for medical care. The only solution is to ban it so they will be happy and the heck w/ anyone else.

On the other hand, you are correct that it isn't normally a problem. They just hope for one.

You're welcome. Believe me, I was one of the skeptics who thought the smell of smoke would be everywhere but I was pleasantly surprised and amazed to find that not to be the case. I am of the opinion that most smokers, nowadays, are keenly aware of how their habit affects others and out of respect for that, they act accordingly. They should be commended for that, not condemned. Ideally, for the sake of their health, they really should try to find a way to free themselves of this dangerous habit but for those who have chosen to continue their habit but do so with minimal intrusion to us nonsmokers, I say thank you. The Veendam's housekeeping staff does one heck of a job at keeping the ship clean and free of odors, of any kind. For those of you who are sensitive to perfume, there wasn't any problem with that as well. Not even in small spaces like the elevators.

How was the smoke in the casino?? We have always found that it is quite smoky there. My DH is on oxygen and quite sensitive to it. As we are going to Bermuda in July, can you tell me if the casino is open only on the sea days and nights prior or is it opene every day, even while in Bermuda?

Just off the Noordam and smoking was not a problem there either.

Smoking was allowed in the Oak Room (next to Crow's Nest) and the Sports Bar. In addition, on deck on the Starboard side.

The only thing I would say is that maybe it would be better to have a door which closes off the Oak Room. It was not a problem but there was a slight smell as you walked past.

DH smokes and I do not. The set up on the Noordam was able to keep us both happy.

Thanks about telling us about the lack of perfume smells. I am more sensitive to that than second hand smoke:)

IF smoking or even the slightest smell of it upset me, I would sail another cruise line. There's the best solution to the anti-smoker's out there.

 

HAL HAS very much limited their area's on the ship's to smoke. It's far more places for non-smoker's to go than there are for smoker's.

I was on Veendam 3 weeks ago, and it wasn't a problem at all.

 

 

Smokers were happy in the areas where it was allowed, and non-smokers were happy in thiers.

 

If it can't remain that simple, then society as a whole is in trouble ... :(

How was the smoke in the casino?? We have always found that it is quite smoky there. My DH is on oxygen and quite sensitive to it. As we are going to Bermuda in July, can you tell me if the casino is open only on the sea days and nights prior or is it opene every day, even while in Bermuda?

A couple of times, I found myself having to walk through the casino while navigating my way around. I have to tell you although there were people smoking, the smell of it was minimal. My husband and I spent a lot of time one evening in the Mix Lounge which is adjacent to the casino and keeping in mind that the casino has an open floor plan, the smell of smoke surely should have been present in the lounge area. But that was not the case. Believe me when I tell you that I am extremely sensitive to the smell of smoke. If it is present then I will be affected by it. It truly was not a problem anywhere. That is not only a testament to the Veendam crew but to the smokers themselves.I hope that it will be the same for you, Lucy. Have a great cruise.

when an HAL ship is in Curacao, for example, the casinos are allowed to open during normal hours

every port I have been to the casinos and shops on board were closed. I think they were in Curacao but we were busy on land when we were there.

I for one find this disappointing, for as a healthy American male I find the smell of good perfume on a beautiful woman to be highly intoxicating.

 

I will be taking my first HAL cruise in 3 weeks and hopefully will find the mix of sea air and perfume to be totally enticing and relaxing.

But if the woman is wearing her perfume properly, you shouldn't be able to smell it unless you are closer than a foot away (preferably closer).

 

It is the ladies, and men with their stinking colognes, that can fumigate an elevator or small room that cause the problems.

I was asking about the casinos because I had read a thread long ago when HAL first announced they were going back to Bermuda that they had struck a deal with the Bermuda authorities to allow the casinos to open from, I believe, 10PM to 4AM, even while in Port so as not to lose all the revenue. I was just wondering if what I had read came to pass.

I love the idea of perfume. I really do. I am just very, very allergic. So much so, when I am around my MIL (who wears quite a bit), my nose will bleed. (I am way beyond the watery eyes, itchy nose, etc...)

 

If I get into an elevator with a "heavy consummer" of scent, I have to get out and wait for the next one or take the stairs. 3 minutes of exposure will end my day...

 

I am not asking people to not wear it, I just wish folks would use with moderation. :)
