Does anone know the ins/outs of getting from the airport to the cruise port? And which airport is better to get to the cruise port?

In terms of distance to the cruise pier, LGA is closest, EWR next, JFK furthest.

 

In taxi fare, LGA is cheapest (about $30-35 + tip and tolls), JFK next (fixed rate $45 + tip and tolls), EWR most expensive (it's in NJ).

 

Of course there are other means of transportation...airport shuttles, buses, various combinations of trains, subways, buses, etc.

 

You should look at airline fares and schedules first, then factor in transportation to the pier. There's no single best answer.

I think LaGuardia is easier to get in and out of than Kennedy and retrieving luggage is easier, but see which flights are more convenient for you.

If you choose to go with Newark airport, you can take a NJ transit train into NY Penn Station and an $8 taxi gets you to the pier. (train fare probably $15 per person or so)

You also need to factor in the time value of money & your risk tolerance. Compare the on-time ratings for each AP & how long it will take you to get to your destination. Flights are usually about $100 less out of LGA but the extra time it would take me to get there costs more than the savings.

LGA tends to require more layovers depending on where you're flying to/from. You'll probably have a bit more options with times and fares in/out of JFK. As a New Yorker, I tend to choose whichever airport is offering the lowest fare though. But, in terms of distance from the port, the order from closest to furthest is LGA, JFK, and EWR.

Allow LOTS of time for getting between the airport and the ship, especially if you end up flying into JFK. They are doing major runway work and depending on time of arrival, there are a lot of delays in and out of JFK.

none of the three NY airports are great when it comes to delays. The repair of the Kennedy runway is due to be completed before July 1 and my bet is will be done early as they get more money for each day its completed before July 1.

each airport has its pluses and minuses.

LGA is closest at about 10 miles. But it has the shortest runways with the most delays and few coast to coast and few international flights. Cab cost about $40 including tips and tolls- 30 minutes without traffic.

EWR is the next closest at about 14 miles. But you have to cross the Hudson by tunnel and is prone to driving delays. While the train is one alternative it generally takes more time than the bus as you have to wait for the train and the bus leaves right in front of the terminal every 15-20 minutes and is scheduled to take 40 minutes...the train requires up and down as you must change trains at least once and then wait for the train to Manhattan anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Cab costs about $70 including round trip tolls and tips(35 minutes with no traffic). EWR has the least expensive parking and car rentals.

JFK although the farthest away at 21 miles has set cab fares that will cost you about $60 including tolls and tips(45 minutes with no traffic) and the most extensive mass transit with buses and the cheapest mass transit at $7.25 per person.(airtrain to the NY subway)
