Smoking in staterooms

so -- hopefully I will not have someone who attempts to tell me how disgusting I am , etc. etc. We all make choices -- but the wonderful thing is -- they are our choices. I don't want my choice to bother someone else -- but I also don't want to be berated when attempting to make sure it does not.

Well, the above comments show why I am hesitant to even attempt to discuss my desire not to bother my neighbors with balcony smoke.

 

Hi, mina. I saw a post from you on a smoking thread yesterday and was going to reply to you but realized it was locked. I just wanted to tell you that I know how you feel about being hesitant to approach neighbors on the ship about smoking. I frequently see smokers on here say just approach me nicely and we can work something out, but then they turn around on here and call us whiners and complainers and my favorite "holier than thous"! Plus, a smoker has the means to retaliate by smoking even more!

 

Anyway, what I wanted to say about your post was that if a neighbor ever approached me and asked if I minded if they smoke, especially if they have a pretty regular routine like yours, I would be very grateful and be most happy to work around your schedule. And if you ever approached a non-smoker and got "flack" instead of cooperation then I would say they deserve to be smoked out, IMHO!

Thanks Toddy!! I am going to do it this January -- went to do it on our last cruise (again corner aft - onyl one neighbor) and when I bent around to say hello - hope we don't bother you -- he had a smoke lit. So it was not a problem.

 

we are next to a suite (c750) next cruise and gosh people pay a lot of $$ for a suite balcony and I don't want them to not enjoy their balcony either.

I wish I knew that Princess was more of a smoking allowed ship before I book a cruise for September. Smoking is not a good thing.....and I would have preferred a cruiseline that is more health conscience for its passengers and crew. If you could have seen what our family saw with my step-mom recently when she had lung Cancer..... PRINCESS get with the times........limit smoking on your ships!!!!

i am a smoker and before i booked my cruise i checked the smoking policies of various lines.

 

as soon as i saw that celebrity does not permit smoking in cabins or balconies i instantly ruled them out,perhaps as a non smoker you should have instantly ruled out princess

Not if Princess happens to be your cruise line of CHOICE for many reasons. That's like me telling you if you're going to smoke, just go cruise Carnival, which I think would be absurd!

Regardless of how you feel about smoking (and smokers), the reality is that Princess, HAL, Cunard allow smoking in cabins and on balconies. I was just on HAL in June and found no problem with smokers. They could smoke in their cabins if they chose to (and many do not because they don't like smoking in such a confined space), or in the casino or on the Lido deck aft (outside). The cafe area on the Lido deck had two sections: the one on the port side was nonsmoking and the one on starboard was smoking. Seemed to work just fine. If a nonsmoker went over to the starboard side, they did so at their own risk. If a smoker decided to light up on the port side, they got the message quickly from fellow passengers. The clue was the ashtrays...they were in evidence on the starboard side but definitely missing on the port side.

 

When and if Princess restricts smoking to outside areas only, the smokers on board have the right to smoke in designated areas as long as they do so safely (meaning using the ashtrays and making sure the cigarette is definitely extinguished).

The more cruise lines limit the number of bars and other indoor places which allow smoking, the more people are going to be driven to their cabins and balconys where they can smoke in peace.

 

It does not make sense for the non-smoking fanatics to constantly pressure the cruise lines to further reduce the few remaining indoor places where people can smoke, and then complain when the smokers are left to their cabins and balconys as their last remaining refuge.

 

If smokers had a reasonable number of indoor bars, then there would be less balcony smoking conflicts with non-smokers.

As more states become non-smoking in public places and as generations are taught the dangers of smoking, maybe this problem will be solved. I just cringe at what people are doing to their system. However, it's their choice.

 

As with all habits and behaviors, someone will be offended. Bottom line, is consideration for others.

I am not a smoker. Don't they have the entire indoor area designated as non-smoking? It is not really 50% of the seats or tables that are smoking

Caribill, just to clarify: these tables were outside only and totalled about 10 or 12 each for smokers and non-smokers. The entire Lido Restaurant (which is indoors) is strictly non-smoking.

Just wondering if anyone has had a problem with a stateroom that was previously occupied by a smoker (we are non-smokers). The cruiseline assured me that they clean the room prior to each cruise in such a way as to eliminate any odor.

There are 2 issues. One issue is the stench associated with a room previously inhabited by a smoker. More dangerous than the stench is the third hand smoke. Here is a link explaining the dangers of third hand smoke:

Among the recommendations are

 

"In buildings where substantial smoking has occurred, replacing nicotine-laden furnishings, carpets and wallboard might significantly reduce exposures."

 

I doubt the furnishing are replaced very frequently. Cruising on a line that does not allow smoking in cabins should significantly reduce the negative effects of third hand smoke.
