Protocol for getting on and off the ship

We'll be on the Diamond Princess trip to Alaska this August. Can anyone tell me how much time it typically takes to get off the ship once we're docked? Also, can we go on and off the ship multiple times during the day? We have little kids who may not have the endurance for all day outings.

Thanks!

Welcome to CC.

How long it takes generally depends on how many people want to get off at any given time. If it's a tender port it will usually take a little longer.

You can come and go as you please - as many times as you want. It's not unusual for people to come back on board for lunch and then go ashore again.

Do remember to set your watch to ship's time (which most of the time will be the same as shore time) so you can be back on board at least 30 minutes before it's time to leave port. The time you have to be back on board will be posted in the ship's daily schedule and usually on signs at the dock. Again, give yourself more time if it's a tender port.

You're gonna love Alaska. :)

The main delay when the ship docks will be waiting for local authorities to clear the ship. This usually takes 30 minutes or so. After that it will depend on how many are lined up, but no more than another 10 or 15 minutes to clear the initial rush.

You can get off and on as often as you wish while the ship is on port. Many people take a tour in the morning, return to the ship for lunch and then head out again to shop or just explore the port.

If you are booked on a tour through Princess, you be notified where to meet for your tour on the ship and you will all be escorted off the ship together. Princess keeps this very organized.

As others said if you are docked in port once the ship has been cleared yo ucan walk on and off the ship as often as you wouldl ike.
