weston gal Posted August 12, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 12, 2010 We will be arriving in Venice sometime in the afternoon on Oct. 6. Our ship, Vision of the Seas, doesn't leave until noon the following day. Once we check in we would like to do some sightseeing. Will we be able to just walk off the ship and walk around? Will there be shuttles to take into the city? Since we may only have a couple of hours I would like the easiest way of utilizing our time. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. chipmaster Posted August 12, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 12, 2010 The port where the ships dock is aways from central Venice attractions like St Marks and Rialto. Princess at least offered roundtrip boat service for 15/person. Picked you up right neat the ship and dropped off in St Marks. Hopefully you'll have a similar service thru your line, or you'll have to hike to the main train station and take the public water taxi in. Rare Keith1010 Posted August 13, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2010 As chipmaster mentioned, normally the cruise ship makes arrangements for transportation such as a boat servce that takes passengers between the dock and the area near St Marks. Normally it runs every 30 minutes. Keith

In one direction, take the alilaguna water bus from the port to St. Mark's or vice versa. http://www.alilaguna.it M line In the other direction, take the people mover tram to Piazzal Roma. From there you can walk to St Mark's in an hour and see the Frari church, the Rialto bridge, the fish market and anything else on the way. Or take the no 1 Vaporetto up the Grand canal in one direction or the other to see the layout from the water. Buy Rick Steve's guide book and with a half decent map you will have all you need. You do NOT need or want to hike from the port to the train station!!

cal56girl Posted August 13, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2010 Just got back from Greek Isles cruise that started in Venice. We spent a few days prior to boarding the ship in Venice. When it got time to get to the ship, Venetians were unsure of how to advise us. Even the Tourist Information booth failed to mention the People Mover at Piazzle de Roma(which was right near them). Instead we schlepped our luggage ourselves then found about the People Mover later(1euro each/each way). Unfortunately Rick Steves doesn't mention it in the book we used. Hope this information will help someone else along the way.
