Port tour tips

Does anyone have any port tour tips is it better to organise tours with ship or can we catch a taxi and do it on our own we will bo porting at ,

 

TOULON , LIVORNO , CIVITAVECCHIA , SARDINA , CADIZ , LISBON , VIGO

Get a guidebook on your ports...then, you'll know if you'll need a guide or if it's doable on your own.

We found Cadiz and Lisbon very easy to your on our own--didn't need a cab or a shore excursion.

I agree with Andee, Cadiz and Lisbon are very easy to just walk around on your own. The town of Cadiz is adjacent to the cruise ship terminal. There are two docks in Lisbon. From one it is about a 15 minute walk and the other one requires a taxi to get to the downtown area.

In most cases, trains & buses in Europe are cheap, frequent, reliable, used by the general population and tourists.

EG trains from Civitavecchia to Rome take little over an hour - that's quicker than by road, 3 trains per hour, cost about €9 (check out ship's "Rome on your own" price :eek:) and includes free travel on buses & metro in the city. Livorno to Florence also by train, ditto Cadiz to Jerez.

 

Alternatives include ship's tours, private tours (mebbe shared, check out posts on your cruise's roll-call), taxis & vans at the quayside or port gate.

Sometimes a ferry (but be very wary of being marooned should ferries be cancelled), some places a ho-ho bus, some places just walk off the ship into town.

 

As CB says, check out your ports in guide books. Plus maps, google eg "Vigo tourist" , plus the ports-of-call boards on this website.

 

Ships tours have their pros & cons, if you're a newbie to Europe or to cruising you'll want to use ship's tours unless your research comes up with reliable alternatives - which it should do. So get studying :)

We were in Cadiz in June. We decided to take the tour "Seville on Your Own". It was a Princess tour. We road a bus to Seville, were dropped off, had about 5 hours and then rode the bus back. We had a wonderful time. I think it was $69/person.

Third alternative is to join the roll call for your sailing. You will find your fellow cruisers there, and most will be arranging private tours and some looking for numbers to fill a limo/van. EM
