cruiser1616 Posted August 19, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2010 We are taking our family on our first Alaskan cruise in about a week. I was planning on taking cute dresses for dinner. I have some sleeveless cocktail dresses for formal night and some more "summery" casual dresses for the other nights. From what I am reading, it sounds like people dress much more warmly. Help -- should I bring warmer dressy clothes for dinners?

cb at sea Posted August 19, 2010 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2010 The ship has heat (should it be necessary!), and it's still SUMMER! You'll be fine!
Coffeequeenj Posted August 19, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2010 What you would normally wear is perfect, we went last year in Sept depending on the port, we only had drizzle once, 70's in Juneau...but, every year is different. The only thing I do differently on an Alaskan cruise is I bring a wrap, last year I bought a nice black one that I could wear with my sleeveless dress and throw around my shoulders-it was perfect. I did bring lots of hoodies, and bought even more, a rain coat, and even light gloves. Enjoy-Alaska is one of my favorite places-I hope you got a balcony! It is well worth it! jaybird from SC Posted August 19, 2010 #5 Share Posted August 19, 2010 Wear what you normally would wear. The ship temperature is always the same just bring a wrap as the air conditioning tends to be a mite chilly in the MDR.
Rare cruisestitch Posted August 19, 2010 #6 Share Posted August 19, 2010 Bring shawls -- the dining room can be chilly. If you want to walk on deck after dinner, you'll need something to wrap around your shoulders, I predict.

Of course us men tend to have on much more, and heavier clothing (dress loafers, socks, slacks, undershirt, long sleeve dress shirt, tie, jacket, etc), so it is all relative I guess ..... Rare Keith1010 Posted August 19, 2010 #8 Share Posted August 19, 2010 You can wear the same clothes on an Alaska cruise to dinner as you would to the Caribbean or to anywhere else. Have a great time. Keith

marti2282 Posted August 21, 2010 #10 Share Posted August 21, 2010 We were on Infinity in July, and I had no problems with sleeveless dresses in the evening INDOORS. It actually seemed more comfortable than the super air conditioner cooled dining rooms on Caribbean cruises. However, DH did DRAG me on deck after dinner -- cold, very cold. dzcruisers Posted August 22, 2010 #11 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Not for dinner, but the one thing that I wished I had taken was a pair of sweat pants so I could be comfy relaxing out on the balcony. We've been to Alaska twice at the end of August, once record temps, 85 everyday, we had to buy summer clothes there, the next time highs in the 60s cold at night. You can't tell what the weather is going to be. Enjoy your cruise!
Booyakasha Posted August 22, 2010 #12 Share Posted August 22, 2010 In Alaska even in the summer you are sailing over water that is about 55F so on deck even if it is warm in port it could be quite chilly when you are sailing. They usually have a good number of wool blankets around the pool (instead of towels) so you can always grab one of those. B.
farsight Posted August 22, 2010 #13 Share Posted August 22, 2010 Wear what you would normally wear to any nice restaurant. I do predict that if you decide to go on deck after dinner, you will most likely be revisiting your cabin for a change or addition of attire.
