Mysteryreader Posted September 3, 2010 #1 Share Posted September 3, 2010 We'll be in Bar Harbor (hurricane permitting) on the Caribbean Princess this coming wk. We're looking for Acacia NP tours. (And looking and looking.) Are there any recommendations for a specific ship's tour, or are we better walking off the ship and signing up with a local vendor? This is a destination we've been talking about driving to and doing on our own, but since we're going to be right there thanks to the cruise, we don't want to squander our time. TIA. drl412 Posted September 3, 2010 #3 Share Posted September 3, 2010 We were there last week and loved it. We just walked up the hill to the village green and jumped on the free national park bus. It takes you throughout the park and some drivers even give basic tours. We got off at sand beach, walked about three miles and picked up another bus back to town. All you pay is $5 to get in the park.....wit you're good on your own, it's worth it!!
SailBadtheSinner Posted September 3, 2010 #4 Share Posted September 3, 2010 There are 2 independent tour companies that do Acadia National Park: Oli's Trolley - http://www.acadiaislandtours.com/ Acadia National Park Tours - http://www.acadiatours.com/ Either one is good. Also as CC member drl412 pointed out, there is a seasonal free bus service, the Island Explorer - http://www.exploreacadia.com/ that serves ANP. However, IE does not go to the top of Cadillac Mountain whereas the 2 tour companies do on the 2.5 hour tours. If you have any additional questions about Bar Harbor or any other port of call in New England, consider posting questions to the New England forum of the Ports of Call board - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20 . DonnaK Posted September 3, 2010 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2010 Another endorsement for The National Park Tour http://www.acadiatours.com/. It was awesome, and the guide was a retired school teacher and very educational/engaging.
atlasali Posted September 3, 2010 #6 Share Posted September 3, 2010 If you have time, after you do a land trip, we enjoyed the excursions on the water throught the Bar Harbor Whale Watching Company. We have gone on numerous Whale watching and Nature cruises. This year we are trying a new trip for us; the 5 Lighthouse Cruise. It was cheaper thru Princess. mowb07 Posted September 3, 2010 #7 Share Posted September 3, 2010 Good suggestions so far - i'd also suggest checking out the "New England" port page devoted to all things NE. I picked up tons of useful info abt the ports on this initerary from there.
1025cruise Posted September 3, 2010 #8 Share Posted September 3, 2010 I've done Oli's Trolley on a road trip to Bar Harbor. We had plenty of time to see the highlights of the park.
