Riviera Goes Total Non Smoking

Mura,

It's a very different world period now. People who hang on to what used to be are doomed to be disappointed. Businesses need to do whatever they can to stay profitable and that is why even O will never go completely nonsmoking. They have to be able to cater to smokers even if it's in a small way.

Just did Celebrity for the first time due to their new smoking policy (stated below) and it was a breath of fresh air. Celebrity is even adding new ships. The Solstice was beautiful.

I think Carnival's failed because it was 1 ship with the same itinerary.

For all Celebrity ships, smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom or on any stateroom veranda. Cigarette smoking will only be permitted in designated indoor and outdoor areas of the ship, while cigar and pipe smoking will only be permitted in designated outdoor areas. Smoking will not be permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, hallway, elevator or corridor. Violations to this smoking policy will result in a $250 cleaning fee being charged to the guest's onboard account and may also be addressed through Celebrity Cruises' Guest Conduct Policy. Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly disposed of and never thrown overboard. A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase, possess or use tobacco onboard.

Additionally, there is a non-smoking policy on all components of the land tour portion of all Celebrity Cruises cruisetour products. We appreciate your understanding and adherence.

Just did Celebrity for the first time due to their new smoking policy (stated below) and it was a breath of fresh air....

We chose Celebrity Mercury last year for an Alaskan cruise (Oceania not going there at that time) for that very reason. We carefully researched the cabins and suites, and ended up with a Sky Suite on the port side of deck 12. Beautiful, huge balcony.

What did we do wrong? We failed to realize that one of those designated outdoor smoking areas was on the aft, port end of the sundeck above the pool on deck 12 -- or about 12 feet forward of our balcony. the smoke blew constantly onto our balcony, rendering it useless for us, and even came in the door to the suite whenever we opened the door. Plus, unless we crossed the ship to the starboard side, we could not use the door to go out on that sundeck because of the smokers.

Oceania's only outdoor smoking area is not on the same deck as any cabins or balconies, and is pretty easy to avoid.

Celebrity may have been more thoughtful on choosing the smoking areas on Solstice and their other ships, but we'll never find out because we won't take another chance.

Sure wish O would figure out a way to make Horizons smoke-free. Isn't there another inside area on the ship where smokers could gather

Since the OP for this thread deals with the Riviera which is still a peanut in the shipyard over in Fincantieri, there certainly is a way to isolate the smoking section.

If you examine the deck plans for Horizons on Marina, the smoking area (on the Port side, near the mens room) is already very sheltered from the rest of the room by the placement of the bar pantry.

Obviously, it would only require the addition of a 15 foot "wall", from the forward end of that pantry wall over to the side of the ship, to make that "inside smoking area" into a totally enclosed space seating about 30.

HVAC modifications would also be in order, but the solution is so simple that I'm sure that Oceania has already mulled this option. It probably has something to do with keeping that Port side exit totally accessible.

Sounds like an easy fix!:)

Dang...

I always thought what they should do is to take an inside cabin somewhere on the ship...

Re pipe the HVAC system so it is not connected...Put weatherstripping on the door...and a sign up on the door: "SMOKER'S LOUNGE"

...and make that the ONLY place on the ship one could smoke...

It would keep the bars, lounges pool deck and deck areas, buffets, dining rooms and showrooms nice and smoke-free so everyone could enjoy them...

...and when the nicotine addicts needed their fix, they could just head over to the Smoker's Lounge and breathe in toxic smoke to their heart's content...

I reccommend this as a "Modest Proposal"...

Good suggestion, but the folks coming out of that "lounge" would be permeated by the odor and it would carry with them.

Or, as Betsy used to say when she had quit smoking and I still indulged, "You reek!" I never understood how much until I also quit.

I've been away for a while, just checked the O board, and took the subject line of this thread literally, as if it were already decided. Apparently not.

A few years ago in a restaurant in Paris, we asked if we could sit in a non-smoking area. The maitre d' paused and, with a concerned look on his face, said "yes...but eez not fun there."

Getting serious for a moment, we have to remember that Oceania is an Equal Opportunity Cruise Experience. As someone once said, everyone is welcome. Kids. Singles. Couples. Inside cabin dwellers. Suite dwellers. Drinkers. Teetotalers. Meat eaters. Vegans. Even politicians -- :pand smokers . On O, everyone is a first class citizen.

There are restrictions to make sure non-smokers are comfortable, but the one outside area and the one inside area are there to accommodate the smokers in any weather.

Well said Don......:D

We're lucky to have found a cruise line that balances things so well for everyone.

Oceanias' live and let live policy is the best of both worlds.

Just had a thought.......if Cannabis becomes legal, I might have to rethink my whole opinion on Smoking rooms ;)

THAT might trigger the rebirth of the Cruise ship Smoking Room:

See, that's the biggest difference between your 50 and my 70 -- by the time that stuff became popular amongst other than rock musicians, I was too old to be tempted.

By the way, a very public "thank you" for meeting us in NYC this past Tuesday. It was a delightful day and a great lunch with you and Stan. It's wonderful that you Young Whippersnappers treat us Old Fogies so well!

I'm just off the Insignia Lisbon to Rome cruise and just wanted to say I didn't find the smoking sections the problem, it was the people smoking cigars that caused us grief.

They rendered the entire Horizons lounge unusable for us because although they are herded into a corner, the smell permeates the entire room. Plus there was more than one occasion when I was in the pool and cigar smoke would waft across from the outdoor smoking area. The smoke seems "heavier" and does not flow upwards. Cigarette smoke disappears upwards fairly quickly but not cigar smoke.

I think if they banned cigars I would be fairly comfortable if they then left the smoking areas as they are.

PS Having said that, a complete non-smoking policy by any line of a similar level to Oceania would be enough to convince me to use them.

Let's keep things in perspective here.

Don, I think you got your images backwards. I think it should have been "smokers:p, politicians:eek:." The hot air those guys are capable of producing often "reeks" far more than what many smokers' exude. :D Kay

Cigar and Pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck.

ONLY???

Cigar smoking out on the pool deck is a real worry for those downwind of the smoker. First of all, cigars REEK. And they reek for a long time.

"Cigars are generally bigger, sometimes containing as much tobacco as an entire pack of cigarettes." (Princeton University).

Princeton University's health study adds "second-hand smoke from a cigar is more dangerous than that of a cigarette. Because cigars have more tobacco, and burn longer than cigarettes, they give off more environmental tobacco smoke. Additionally, cigar smoke contains higher concentrations of the carcinogens found in cigarette smoke."

I wish Oceania would nix the cigar smoking altogether.

You are quite right! This is Oceania's stated policy:

Cigar and Pipe smoking is only permitted on the forward starboard corner of the Pool Deck.

In which case people were clearly violating this edict as Horizons often stunk of cigars.

This wouldn't surprise me as on more than one occasion I noticed smokers (cigarettes and cigars) wandered away from the outdoor smoking area to the bar and were not talked to by any staff.

I am surprised the GM or whoever in charge did not say something to them ..especially if people complained
