pink sand judy Posted September 25, 2010 #27 Share Posted September 25, 2010 I think the Spirit is lovely and the decor is fantastic. Majesty was so close to home and the crew most of them were like family after 11 times. Jimswims has not jumped on this yet. Coka, someday I will find that plaque. I have a good idea where it is. In the future the Dawn is my next stop.

Mr. Luckytoo Posted September 25, 2010 Author #29 Share Posted September 25, 2010 Hey Mr. Luckytoo! The ones I have sailed all have something special and unique about them. I see you are sailing other lines in your signature. Are you considering a particular NCL ship in your future? Similar polls have been done in the past with the Dawn being the favorite and the Pearl a close second. Interesting how the Spirit and the Pearl are neck in neck in this race! coka i've got a reservation for Sun and the jade both pending. I've done the Sky, Spirit & Epic. LOVED the Spirit, (colors, size, layout) Epic was nice (too Vegasy for me and not enough like a cruise) but didn't like the Sky - (the Buffet area was a clusterf***, Cagney's poor and the casino area - mehhhhh)
Mr. Luckytoo Posted September 25, 2010 Author #30 Share Posted September 25, 2010 it matters a bit whether a ship is having engine problems currently, and if the ship is the best NCL ship offered in a market. This explains the fall of the Dawn and Star. Plus the Spirit is the best ship NCL has offered in the Boston and New Orleans markets. Maybe next year when the Dawn is based in Boston the poll numbers will change, but she has had a string of bad luck with her azipods and now her engine. The Star has had engine problems based in LA, and her 8 day Acapulco itineraries, many of them starting mid week hurt her reputation. When Disney moved a ship into the LA market NCL couldn't give away cruises to fill the Star. The Spirit was the second fiddle in Seattle, Miami, and New York City. Not so in Boston and New Orleans... Great observations Don. Thanks for the perspectives
Mr. Luckytoo Posted September 25, 2010 Author #31 Share Posted September 25, 2010 I keep reading about these ships but they're not part of the active fleet. So what happened to them and why were they so special?
Don Haynes Posted September 25, 2010 #32 Share Posted September 25, 2010 I keep reading about these ships but they're not part of the active fleet. So what happened to them and why were they so special? The Majesty sailed out of Boston for over a decade. She represented NCL in the Boston market. She is now a ship with Louis Lines in the Aegean Sea. As new ships have been built older ships are discarded... Other former NCL ships are sailing with Louis Lines as well. The Wind and Sea are now sailing for Star Cruises in Asia. While the Dream was supposed to be sold to Louis Lines, she is now anchored waiting to be sold. The credit crunch affected her sale to Louis Lines. And the Crown is now sailing for the British Fred Olsen Lines as the Balmoral...
bob brown Posted September 25, 2010 #33 Share Posted September 25, 2010 .......... There is more to NCL than New York City... That is true. But NCL seems to offer more than any other line from NYC. And the Norwegian Dawn will always hold a special honor as the ship that brought all-year long cruising back to New York. It used to be that when the QE2 sailed from NYC in January on her world cruise, there were no other cruises from NY until April, when the QE2 returned from her world cruise. And there was little, if any, in November or December, either.

NowVoyager908 Posted September 25, 2010 #35 Share Posted September 25, 2010 I've only sailed on the Spirit and the Dawn, both from NYC. Loved both, but the decor on the Spirit and the aft amphitheater give her the win by a nose. By next spring, I hope to add the Gem to list of NCL ships and we'll see how the list shakes out after that. :)
Barb Nahoumi Posted September 26, 2010 #36 Share Posted September 26, 2010 Me tooThe Majesty was my favorite ship, from the size, to the personnel, to the food. I loved everything about her :) I also enjoyed the Majesty. It had few bells & whistles, but we had some great cruises to Bermuda aboard her. Although I voted for the Pearl, I must say that any ship I happen to be on at the time is my favorite. I'd much rather be aboard a ship than at home or work. tigerlilycruiser12 Posted September 26, 2010 #37 Share Posted September 26, 2010 We enjoyed the majesty as it was our first cruise...the cruise that got me hooked on cruisin and obsessed. we must have sailed her 8 times to Bermuda. What a scarey viedo majesty hit by rouge wave... Today I have to say the spirit and dawn are special to me with the Gem close behind. A lot of special memories and lots of fun. So what happened to them and why were they so special? The Norway was orgionally the SS France. An explosion in the boiler room ended the Norway's career. Back in the day she was quite a ride. google SS Norway and you will see a lot of links. Here is one with some great pictures. Ignore the music as it is "Princess" music. Enjoy!!! newmexicoNita Posted September 26, 2010 #40 Share Posted September 26, 2010 On the list which is your favorite ship that you've sailed? I choose the Sun, but we love the Pearl and Jewell as well or almost. There is just something about the Sun. Maybe because it was the first freestyle ship we sailed, maybe it is the size of the cabins, they are just a tiny bit bigger, I don't know, maybe it is Las Rambles. The only thing I don't like about the Sun? the buffet set up is awful.. Nita
kcwingwalker Posted September 26, 2010 #41 Share Posted September 26, 2010 Glad to see the Spirit doing so well. I know there are Spirit fans lurking, so it's time to get voting!

electricron Posted September 27, 2010 #43 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Although no longer with NCL, having no balcony cabins at all, I liked sailing on the Norwegian Sea the most. Everything was sized perfectly for a ship built when it was built, and of course it didn't hurt that she sailed for many years from Houston. jingle5616 Posted September 27, 2010 #44 Share Posted September 27, 2010 I had a little thing going on with the Star, but then they went and ruined it. I voted for the Pearl. Good ship and excellent crew. Jingle

pappagene Posted September 27, 2010 #46 Share Posted September 27, 2010 The NORWAY!!!! The good old days when a ship had wide open decks, elegent public rooms. I agree, she was a cut above the modern ships of today. But, since she is gone now, I will enjoy what I can get now. Gene

Don Haynes Posted September 27, 2010 #48 Share Posted September 27, 2010 The DAWN must be best, 'cause it's been modified to accommodate to azipod problems: Unfortunately, this time she blew a rod through one of her four engines block. At the moment her azipods are fine...
crew mom Posted September 27, 2010 #49 Share Posted September 27, 2010 Since DS's ship wasn't an option ('cause whatever ship he is on, is my current favorite!) I chose the Sun for her pool deck, Promenade deck and Great Outdoors Cafe.
