Wendy The Wanderer Posted October 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 1, 2010 Rain is more likely in January than July, for sure. But I don't believe it's that much more rainy. Of course, storms can happen any time, no guarantees. I've been in December, not January, and it was fine. Hot and humid. I'd go.

Yes it rains in short sharp showers, at least that has been our experience on 2 visits over the years. At least it isn't a cold rain!!!!:):):)

JimandStan Posted October 1, 2010 #5 Share Posted October 1, 2010 Tahiti gets a good deal of sunshine, throughout the year There is a rainy season, however, which starts in November and ends in March. During those months it is more muggy than usual and it also rains more frequently.
lespes Posted October 1, 2010 #6 Share Posted October 1, 2010 We've been there in both the summer and the winter. Keep in mind that January in Tahiti is in the middle of their summer. I don't recall experiencing much rain on either trip, but it was defininitely warmer on the summer trip.

threeedogmedia Posted October 7, 2010 #8 Share Posted October 7, 2010 We were on the Paul Gauguin on Jan 4th 2002 and the weather was almost perfect. We had a couple hour hard rain on one day and then the weather improved and it was beautiful again. The rain came down during a cruise to another port so it wasn't all that bad..... We were told the week before they had more rain. We just hit it lucky. Karen
Paulchili Posted October 16, 2010 #9 Share Posted October 16, 2010 Unfortunately, as mentioned by others, January is the rainy season. If you are in Bora Bora for 1 day and it happens to rain (as it happened on our cruise) you will not think too much of Bora Bora. The beautiful colors of the water depend on sunshine; you may not see the mountains, etc Fortunately we stayed in Bora Bora after the cruise for a couple days and it was sunny - the island was as pretty as a post card. It would be bad luck to go that far and have bad weather (and it can happen). That is one of the main differences (weather-wise) between Hawaii and Polynesia. In our/NA winter (when most people want to "get away"), Hawaii is at its best and Polynesia at its worst (hot, muggy and rainy). But if you get lucky with the weather, those lagoons are spectacular (and Hawaii does not have them). Wish you lots of sunshine :)
vaitape Posted October 16, 2010 #10 Share Posted October 16, 2010 We've been in French Polynesia during every month except January. It rained like crazy last November and the islands experienced Cyclone Olie this past February I believe. Our experience has been that the weather can be fabulous one day and not the next, regardless of the time of year. Because the islands are so close to the equator, there is little seasonal change. However, Nov-March is considered the rainy season and also cyclone season....which means in truth, that the chance of rain is increased but not guaranteed. You know that Mother Nature is fickle and unpredictable....so go prepared and have a wonderful time. FP is our most favorite spot in the whole world.
