Venice-Water taxi from port

There will be 8 of us at the same hotel and want to take a private water taxi.

 

Should we book one ahead of time? Or will there be private water taxis at the port waiting to pick up passengers?

I've never had a problem walking right up and getting one, but I've never tried to do it during the peak tourist season. When are you traveling? Perhaps someone who has experience with this during the key months will chime in.

When do you disembark in venice? We had 1 smallish ship. If there were 2 or 3 huge ones I imagine there could be a line up.

We will be arriving next month on a relatively small ship. Sounds like we should be OK to just wing it.

we were on the Legend in June, which is a fairly busy month. Someone recommended we get a water taxi pass. I don't remember the cost but you save some money. It is so many rides. We were in Venice over night, so we used it the first night, we went to dinner and then the next morning to go back to St. Mark's for Mass. So it was 2 trips each for 2 of us. The first time was included in the excursion, but we knew we would be going back and forthe because of the over night. hope this helps:D

Thanks for your reply but I think what you are referring to is a pass on the public water buses. I am looking for a private water taxi that would take us directly to our hotel.

As another poster said the private taxis seem to be everywhere. One thing to remember that though a taxi can take 8 if you include luggage you are looking more like two taxis for 4 people each plus luggage.
