Hi all -

We need recommendations for hotels in Hong Kong. We are looking at the Marriott and Intercontinal - but amazed at the costs.....

We need clean, safe and great location but don't want to break the bank. Willing to spend 150 to 250 a night.

Ideas welcomed :D

We stayed at the YMCA/Salisbury Hotel our last go around and thought very highly of it to the point where we will stay there after our cruise ends.

It is nearby the Star Ferry Terminal/Ocean Terminal where our cruise ship docks, the Peninsula Hotel, short block to the subway station.

You can't beat the YMCA/ Salisbury. I stayed there in 1964 when it was just the Y for about $5 a night. Great location-5 minutes from the cruise terminal and Star ferry. Across the street from the Peninsula- one of the best hotels in HK. You want to be on the Kowloon side. Then they built a hotel on top of the Y and called it the Salisbury. Still one of the best deals in town. Fills up fast.

We're staying at the Kowloon Shangri-la post cruise for $300. harbor view.

How 'bout that!

Been to HK twice in recent years, once at the Kowloon Shangri-la :), once at the Salisbury :).

And I'd highly recommend both.

But Shangri-La just has to be a harbour-view room. Can't remember what we paid, but for minimum (5?) nights' stay we got harbour view for the basic rooom price. The entire wall looking over the harbour is glass, absolutely brilliant. Slightly less convenient than Salisbury, a 10 min walk to the ferry - but along the waterfront (ave of stars) so no great hardship.

Only downside was the in-hotel prices. There's free tea/coffee making in the room. And we were given a free afternoon tea (questionaire lucky draw or somesuch) but the list-price was eye-watering.

You may have figured we're not your average 5-star clientele - stayed in dozens of hotels, but just two 5-stars.

Salisbury we also stayed in harbourview (no vacancies at K/S-La). Standard windows & partially obstructed by the Space Museum, but still good & of course way cheaper.

Brilliant location, very acceptable room & facilities, only minor criticism is that the hotel is generally perhaps just lacking a little in flair & finesse.

But don't be put off by the YMCA tag - you won't notice any difference from other hotels. Just hope they don't drop the tag, or they'll book-out even quicker than they do!!

Harbour-view rooms in these or any other hotel - tune your radio to the local station which provides the commentary/music to accompany the 8pm nightly laser show. It makes a huge difference.

If/when we go back again, it'll be to the Salisbury if we pay. :)

But the Kowloon Shangri-la if someone else pays. :) - or the Peninsula

John -

Your last sentence says it all. My husband stayed at the Kowloon Shangri-la several times on business years ago, and he just wanted to revisit it when we disembarked in Hong Kong. Alas, we have to pay for it. :-( We're only staying one night because a new grandchild will be arriving and we need to get home.

If you like Langham, you may like Royal Plaza. Langham is newer, right in the middle of town. Close to Lady's Market. Royal Plaza is also close to the Lady's Market, right next to the MTR subway station and a nice mall. Royal Plaza has the biggest rooms we had in HK hotels.
