New to NCL - Questions about bringing wine onboard

we just put them in a gym bag with a towel on the bottom in case they broke (we bought them in miami beforehand so didn't have to worry about them on an airplane), also we had a 6 pack of those little mini-coke bottles in there and surprisingly enough everything made it to our room in one piece. This bag did come to our room later than the rest so we thought we had got busted but it did arrive.. Maybe they charge when you bring the bottle into a restaurant? We brought our own cork, got wine glasses from the bar and poured it in the room just in case...

 

If you got them on without paying after security or in the Naughty Room AND tried to take a bottle to a restaurant, you would have been charged the corkage fee at that time.

There are several pretty good ones out there. Forget about the 5 liter ones, that's the crap we drink during the week and it isn't worth going on a cruise with you. The 3 liter boxes that are good: and I am not sure the names are right, someone correct me: Hardy's, one that begins with B and any of those that sell for $15 to $20 a box (depending on where you live) Actually Inglenook makes some that are good as well.

Would it be possible to buy a bottle of red onboard to simply enjoy in my cabin? I suppose via room service. How much of a mark-up will there likely be on that bottle? (hic)

Just off Sun on Saturday and thought their wine was expensive. Least Expensive reds were $28 plus tip = $32.20. Some Malbec, Merlot - not a huge selection and only a few at that price.

yep, even worse than restaurants. The markup it about 3 times, restaurants it is usually about 2.5 times.

Ok, I like to drink wine on my balcony and we do tend to have a bar bill besides. I guess that Black Box wine bladder may just slip into my suitcase. If I get caught, I am out about 23.00. :p

 

If you get nabbed you might be able to pay the corkage fee and keep it. I really don't know. As I mentioned I have seen people get them taken away. I am sure some have made it to the balconies as well.

Does anyone know if there is anyplace very close to the San Pedro pier/port where we can purchase wine? I don't really want to carry it on the plane. We will be arriving VERY early and will probably use a NCL transfer from the LB airport. Is there somewhere within walking distance to where we'll get dropped off to buy wine and/or other last minute items?

i beleive there is a convenience store not too far from the pier, but it will still be quite a walk. There might be something closer to LB airport. The airport is in a commerical area with lots of things around it. I just never noticed a liquor store or convenience store cause I wasn't interested. We spent the night in San Pedro just before our last Princess cruise. There were liqour stores near the hotel. Last spring we spent 3 nights near LAX, same thing, there were places around the hotel to get wine.

We are waiting onboard Star to disembark in San Pedro from our 7-day trip tp the Mexican Riviera. We brought onboard 12 bottles of wine, which we carried on. When we came to the metal detectors, they took our wheelie cart and escorted us to a talble, where an NCL employee put a sticker on each bottle and wrote u p a ticket for 12 bottles * $15 corkage fee. easy-peasy. With the sticker attached, we took wine with us to the dining rooms to the pool deck etc. At each place someone provided us glasses if needed, and removed the sticker from the bottle when we were done. We were told that they turn in the sticker for a portion of the corkage fee that they then get to keep.

 

 

i'm confused about how a wine bottle could set off a metal detector :confused:

It is only a given if you don't get caught. From our cruise (Epic, Oct. 2-9), our roll call leader was caught. Made an appearance in the Naughty Room and there was major discussion as to how much to charge for the box wine (it was also taken out of the box). They ended up letting him go with the $15 corkage fee.

 

They actually state now in "frequently asked questions" section,

That NO boxed wines are allowed on board.

In doing our research I read in several places (on several sites) that people believe that you cannot bring wines on board (paying the $15. corkage fee per 750 ml bottle) IF they are wines that NCL ships have on their wine list. I called NCL directly today and they confirmed that indeed this is NOT the case. You may bring any vintage/winery (commercial-not homemade) brand/bottle you like regardless of whether they have the same bottle available on board and pay the corkage fee to do so.

Not sure where metal detector was mentioned, but... it is not a metal detector that cause the problem, unless it is on your body. The scanner for your carry on bags is more like an x-ray, not a metal detector. Same with your checked bags. Pretty much all bags have some sort of metal anyways.

Waiting the time before your luggage arrives at your cabin and thinking whether your cache has been discovered, it is just not worth the worry. Remember, if they discover it, in most cases, you are responsible in bringing your own luggage to your cabin from the "naughty or lecture" room.

Go with the vino package, but do your own research first. Some of the bottles are worth drinking and some are just not.

Bringing your own wine at 15 dollars each is worth it if you have a favorite wine or wine assortment or if you have a very high price gourmet wine.

As for the detectors, they can clearly see an outline of a glass bottle in your luggage.

I would very much like to review the wine package options, but can't fine them on the NCL web site; all I have seen is individual bottle prices. I usually sail Princess and they have no package options on the web site, but offered them on board. Is it the same on NCL, or am I looking in the wrong place? (NCL newbie), Laurie
