All things EARTH...

Recommended Posts

The wine red is beautiful. With how much you love red, Laurie, it would seem to be a good pick for you. I noticed that you could order swatches of the colors for $2 ea...maybe you should get the colors you are debating and see if having them in your hand makes one speak LOUDER! :D

For me, it's the olive dress all the way.

I seem to have a thing for this kind of color. So I think that it would have the greatest longevity in my wardrobe. Also...I would prefer the color to run in the background more and maybe have more fun with the accessories...not that I wear that much jewelry...but still...those are my thoughts.

I went shopping in Kohl's yesterday. It took me about 3 hours to find 3 shirts.

I have a serious gap in my wardrobe in the casual shirt department. Most of them are just solid knit tee-shirt type shirts. There's nothing wrong with them, except that they aren't very flattering overall. And there are times when I want to look/feel nicer than I do in a normal tee.

I'm having some issues with my body shape right now. :o It isn't where I want it to be and so I find myself having a hard time accepting the way that I look and especially the way that certain clothes fit. Unfortunately, there are several styles out there that look like maternity clothes on me...

I also was purchasing these casual shirts to work with some exercise capris that I purchased at the beginning of summer. The capris have a bit of a flare/slit at the bottom and so pass well for casual knit capris...but they hold their shape a bit better than I have found in normal bottoms.

But...that means that I was looking to coordinate with black and gray bottoms...

Not an easy task...

It turns out that I really liked the style with the wide fitted band around the bottom...looks very appropriate with my capris...and it helps me feel better about my middle. I got this shirt in the Navajo Stripe Teal color:

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2095819/ab-studio-print-banded-bottom-top-womens.jsp

There is black in there...but zoom in to see the wonderful Earthy teal and tan print that makes this read Earth. I think that it will pair equally well with jeans or khaki bottoms.

These were on sale, so limited stock in the store. I didn't see the animal print in the store (or the Geo prints)...so I can't offer an opinion on whether that is a white background or not. The Navajo Stripe Pink read Air to me...because it was muted, but looked awful on me.

The fabric is awesome though. Feels very nice and would travel very well.

Similar fabric, but a rayon jersey instead of polyester, I also picked this one up in Beige Sketch:

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2089965/croft-barrow-pleated-scoopneck-tank-womens.jsp?color=Beige%20Sketch

It's pretty good IRL. The blend of black and tan helps it to read more Earth, but it may not be the best ever...KWIM? However, it coordinates very well with both black and tan (obviously) and so it works really well for me. I'm thinking that when I care, I can add a coordinating scarf that will highlight the more Earthy tan aspect near the face...otherwise...this will get a lot of mileage for me.

I also tried the Tribal Brown...but unfortunately, even with the orange and brown, the raspberry color dominates, and I thought the other one looked WAY better on me. I would not recommend any other color in the series for Earth. All you Airs out there though...the blue and gray ones...I think they could be winners for you.

Here is another batch of colors:

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2043344/croft-barrow-print-pleated-tank-womens.jsp

The green is NOT Earth. The tan-like color in here has that pink cast to it? This MAY work for Air...but there may not be enough pink. If you love green and are an Air, it would be work a look, but I fear this is one of those "no man's land" patterns that really don't look that great on anyone.

The other colors here are definitely a mix of Air and Ice. It's hard to tell in the store lighting...and prints are hard to call...you need a face to really see how the print reads overall.

I wanted this shirt to work:

http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-2076334/ab-studio-gauze-knot-front-shirt-womens.jsp

Because I've been on the look out for a shirt that I could wear as a sort of overlayer to make the cami/tank style shirts I love to wear at home more modest for public viewing. I loved the buttons which could be left open and the shirt tail wasn't too long to leave untied...but obviously was long enough to tie. But this orange is FIRE. The Marine Blue might be Fire, too...it feels warm...I pictured Mom wearing it more than Dad (and that's my personal mental test to try to determine Fire v. Ice)...but this is a mental exercise and not a for real conclusion.

My Kohls was also stocking the beginnings of fall clothing. And that means Earthy colors.

I picked up another shirt that isn't on the website yet. It's a FABULOUS color that is kind of brown/olive/bronze with one of those decorated necklines in black and bronze. The shirt itself has texture in the color because it is heathered with a dull black. (The way gray tee shirts are heathered with white.)

The shirt itself has that wide, slightly ruched at the sides band on the bottom. It is basically a two panel shirt with the front and back panels also having the shape of the sleeves...so it has that slight "butterfly" effect...with a longer short sleeve.

It's my favorite of the shirts I bought and I can't find a photo to share. :(

Never mind...I'm sure it will go on my September cruise, so I will share then, if not before.

I'm in a big debate over what to do about my wardrobe on this September cruise. It's only 4 nights...

Which means that I could have a lot of fun with clothes because I'm flying Southwest (free checked baggage) and with 4 nights, having more fun with clothes wouldn't still be so much less than a week long trip OR

I could be extremely economical with the clothing because it IS only 4 nights.

I do like to see my men dressed up...and I know they both enjoy it...BUT...maybe we would just be totally casual this trip and go to Chops on the one formal night?

And save having to pack two sport coats. And save my hot men from having to wear long sleeved dress shirts and sport coats in the heat...

Hmmm. Great dilemma to have!

Ahh, Anita. I really like the optional tie-front top. It has one of the few styles I feel comfortable ending at my waist and I LURVE that neckline. Banded bottom tops are good for me, as well as pleated necklines too. The split-neckline is as good, maybe better than a simple v-neck because the gathered material attached to the neckline gives a little extra room for the girls and skims over my extra middle. I recently bought this in light peach for work. It is the palest peach possible and reads as ivory to me.

On another note, somehow I missed a couple of pages of your trip recap. I realized today when going back trying to pick up where I last read on this thread. I saw the storefront window that you earmarked for me. You were spot on! The only thing about the style that I would change is the buckle on the purse. I like long straps for shoulder or cross-body style that are as simple and plain as possible.

I was reading on a blog today about what I used to call broomstick skirts and if Grandmother, Mother and Daughter could all wear them styled to suit each generation. I've kept several of my broomstick skirts because I love them and keep wishing they would come back in style.

What's the concensus here? Would anyone wear broomstick skirts, long cotton maxi skirts, all one panel or 2-3 tiered in either solid or riotous colors or should they stay in storage a while longer?

Oh, does anyone see Laurie's convertible dress in a yellowed gray color? There are several grays, but my eyes never seem to focus on FIRE gray. I mean EVER!

Debbie, I just came back from lunch out with the girls. Three of them had on broomstick skirts! They were all early 30s & had them on with ribbed tanks & several necklaces or scarves - they'll looked great! I felt rather bland in my skort & polo shirt

Anita, thank you for taking us shopping at Kohls! Definitely one of my favorite places to shop, especially when you have an extra 30% off! It helps having an explanation of the colors. Hopefully someday I will be able to see a color and think Fire or Ice!

Life got in the way...specifically painting the porch and front door! Pictures will have to wait until that project is done! I did find some nice Fire colors though..Aqua, purple and corals to use in the pictures!

Anita, that green and beige shirt was looking earthy on my monitor but there does seem to be something off in the beige. It's funny. But banded tops are iffy on me. I like having casual non t-shirt styles to wear so I will have to do some looking. My favorite orange top had already been taken in once and I gave it up because I would have had a mess at the top. That was the best part of the shirt too.

I'm thinking that I really want to try that dress in that wine color!

Hey Lauri...I'm staring at your pictures and I've got myself conflicted over two pictures.

Could you do one more picture?

Go into a dark room and take a very close selfie...WITH a flash. I want to see you in an overexposed photo. Take a couple...see if you can get your face to look like this:

http://www.likeitorlurvit.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/sockbun2.jpg

That is, where you features just about disappear because of the bright flash. I'd like to see that photo. Just one, if you take more than one.

Anita, liked the tops you pictured from Kohls.

Melody, I'm wearing maxi skirts all summer and into fall.

Laurie, I'm so glad you're going to get the wine-colored dress.

Finally, some good news from me! We booked a 7-day Christmas cruise to the Mexican Riviera! The DS got home yesterday and while we were having lunch I ran the idea by him and unexpectedly...he jumped at the idea!

As I mentioned in a previous post, we recently got a couple of letters from Carnival offering a casino special with discounted rates (because the DH and DS gambled in the casino on our 3-day Mexican trip last summer). It's insane how cheap we got this cruise for. Under $300 per person...plus we each get a $50 on-board credit (which we'll use for the steakhouse)! So, ladies...I'm stoked!

More good news is that we will be spending not only Christmas, but also our 30th Wedding Anniversary on the cruise! I just informed the DH and DS that, on this cruise, they WILL be wearing suits! LOL! I was quite surprised that I got no "Oh no!" from them. Now I'll have to go out and find something new for me to wear for our anniversary dinner.

Okay, I'm going to start planning a winter cruise which is something we've never done. I'm going to be dressing way more festive for our MDR dinners on this cruse. I'm so excited...but I've said that already...LOL!

Anthomaniac, hi! Pictures are always a good way to start, as you can see with our process with Lauri. Natural light is the best, especially outside or near a window. A flash can really affect color, and natural lighting just shows color much truer than other sources.

Sometimes too, people will relate to celebrities and so forth. Perhaps your natural hair color is similar to someone that we see commonly on TV or in magazines, for example.

Lauri, I know exactly what I am thinking with your season. I would like to see if others think the same when they see your latest photos, but I have to say, you did a great job capturing a picture of your eye color. I remember when I tried to take a picture of mine, and it was before I had my smart phone and I just couldn't get a good picture for anything!!!

Lauri...

IMO...as self taught as I am...I do believe that you are indeed

EARTH!!!

After all that.

There are several reasons why I think so. I'm posting so that maybe Laurie can offer her opinion too since she wanted to wait to hear first.

I was thinking earth as well. Sometimes because of color from the sun, our skin is a hard read. When Anita asked for a closeup of your eye color, it was a great idea. I am thinking how you have those flecks, and how the eye color itself feels muted.

I am so excited to hear! I wonder if I am an earth but maybe I will gravitate to certain earthy colors over others. Mustards, rusts, uh uh. But maybe some of the earthy greens, Browns, oranges would work for me. It will be fun to go clothes shopping once I know what colors I should be looking for. The eye picture kept turning out blurry, so I held the camera further away and then dropped it to make it bigger.

So, what does the overprocessed photo do for you color experts? It just looked weird to me!

I've always had trouble with deciphering skin tone because sun, cleansers, dryness, etc all affect our face and that is the thing we see in a picture. Anita came up with a great theory about thickness of skin that I will let her explain.

When I see you, I think of brown, olive, and beige type colors first. You my not be a fan of mustard but I think it would work.

We were all posting at the same time! Funny that you say Earth, Anita, since that was kind of my thought from the beginning. I felt I was too dark for Spring, as in, my hair color is too dark. A lot of the descriptions of Spring were more dark blonde, ashy light brown. I think I was hoping you would say Fire since many of my favorite colors were included there, but it is good to know I may not be looking my best wearing those colors!

So, all of my clothes in the last group were all wrong then! I have some learning to do! No more Aqua, corals? I will have to go back to the earth swatches and see what colors feel "right" to me!

Thanks Ladies,

lauri

Lauri.

Truly. This is just my opinion, but… I don't think that you really posted a true FIRE type of picture. You were really, really close… but you weren't really BRIGHT, hurt-your-eyes type of bright in the colors that you chose. I think the closest color to FIRE might have been the blue (the second picture in the last color grouping). Training your eye to a true FIRE color is really difficult; it took me ages to truly get a real "feel" for what bright even meant.

I'm just chiming in to see that NO!… absolutely, you CAN have aquas and corals in your wardrobe. You just need to have a more muted version of the aquas and corals… and, trust me, they are really easy to find. Especially in aqua, I think that there is a line that is really close to being crossed where EARTH and FIRE ladies will look pretty good in the color… probably not as bright as FIRE needs and, maybe, not as muted as EARTH's most fabulous color option… but good enough! Good is really a great thing to strive for; perfect is really, really hard to achieve… and, sometimes, I wonder if it's really worth striving for.

So, that's just my 2 cents worth. Don't think that you have to give up a color that you love… just because. You really don't. You just need to find the right version of that color… for you.

Edit: Wow. I totally quoted the wrong post! Sorry. I meant to kind of reflect upon your statement about excluding aquas and corals from your wardrobe. Shoulder shrug. I think the problem is…. not ENOUGH wine this evening!

First things first...Melody...you need a CLOSE UP of that eye.

I will address my theory on the eye...and hope that I can find examples enough to have anyone else see what I'm seeing.

First, I went looking for those eye close ups that we had posted on the Seasons thread...but we all moved those pictures...

It is my belief that someone that requires muted colors has eye coloring that is more like a watercolor painting...that is, all the colors of the eye sort of blend into each other and there is no clear delineation between the different colors in the iris. Cloudy could be another word to describe such an eye.

Here's a "muted" eye:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTLctrGRgC_2mRJxkpCH_LGsYBKvaFg7su_UwVldJ5t-Wf9ZxmN

In contrast, a "clear" eye could be more compared to stained glass...or a kaleidoscope. There is a kind of crystal like quality to the coloration that brings to mind cut glass:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS4OzyUUORk_XeWj9EatGXcvUOwICfh4f_Chh1wpHK5jwdFYz2E

Lauri...I think you have "muted" eyes. So that helps lead to the EARTH.
