Self Defense on a Ship

Recommended Posts

Another thread where some ineffectual drunk 18yr old swung (and missed) at a minor got me thinking.

If some drunk gets rowdy, and violent and needs to be dealt with immediately. What happens to the defender? Say a drunk starts shoving you, makes like he is going to harm you or a loved one, and you lay him out to prevent further problems.

Do you get booted off the ship as well?

I was told when I was assaulted on the Destiny that if I would have fought back I would have been left behind at the dock along with the guy who assaulted me.

It would be best to leave the area and go directly to the security folks.

If you MUST defend yourself do so, of course but have someone head off to security ASAP and explain exactly what is occurring.

This is how Carnival references such activities:

(e) Carnival has a “zero tolerance” policy toward any illegal activity or behavior by Guests or crew aboard. Guest agrees to comply with this policy and further acknowledges that it is Carnival’s policy to report incidents of illegal activity or behavior to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

Bottom line, yes, they could put both parties off the ship if they wanted to.

I agree with Mach, let the security people handle the situation in the majority of cases, that's what they are there for. I wouldn't go full out Rambo on someone if the need to defend myself arose, but I would do enough just to diffuse the situation until the proper people were there to help.

It kind of depends, security will talk to all the people who may have witnessed the altercation and if there is any indication that the drunk was provoked or that it wasn't an entirely one sided attack then both parties may be dealt with.

I had a drunk husband start acting agressively toward me and my sister because he thought we were looking disapprovingly at his wife who was up on the casino stage, drunk and trying to dirty dance with kids as they came down the promenade.

I thought he was going to hit my sister, I turned to the casino bartender and asked her to call security and they showed up within seconds. The drunk was walking away as soon as he heard me call for security, but I pointed him out and security went to talk to him.

They came back and asked my side of the story, then ask what WE wanted done with him. I said if he and his drunk wife would simply stay away from us then I would be happy, but if he tried in any way to contact us, then I would want him dealt with in a more harsh manner.

We never saw the couple again......a friend that was traveling with them came up to me late that night and appologised and said security was ready to put them off the ship and she just wanted me to know that we wouldn't have any more trouble from either of them.

Good grief! Has it really sunk to this?

If I have to give serious consideration about when and how to beat up a fellow passenger, I'm just going to stay home.

No but since my first cruise I always have considered what would happen in a "drunk wants to have a physical altercation" situation. In my case it would involve running very quickly in another direction and/or yelling fire if I am cornered.

Only been approached by a drunk 1 time and i just walked away. But when you are a woman you ALWAYS think about those kinds of things even on vacation

Huh? Sunk to what? Whats sinking? Its just a question about a possible

So there have never been any drunks assaulting people? It happens and where booze is flowing, chances increase.

I don't know where you think I was considering when and HOW to beat up a fellow passenger, you are reading way to much into it. I would rather avoid the confrontation if possible.

BUT there are times when its not possible and I wondered how it was handled on a ship.

I honestly think that if a random drunk came out of no where and started assaulting someone without any warning (very unlikely) and that person HAD to defend themselves, that CCL would not throw the victim off the ship. Of course there would need to be witnesses or video of such a weird event.

Now if someone provokes a drunk into assaulting them THEN they have to defend themselves, I can see CCL throwing the "victim" off the boat.

I know this may seem crazy to some of you but confrontations are actually very easy to avoid. Yes, sometimes you have to swallow your pride and look like a wimp, but I would take looking like a wimp over getting in a fist fight on vacation in front of my family any day.

Boy, that sounds like a bad idea! Wouldn't want to be left alone with them, that's for sure.

Huh? There's a huge difference between self defense and beating up another passenger. One is defensive and the other offensive. Cretainly it is best to avoid the confrontation when possible. The best it could turn out would still intrude on the fun times of a cruise. I don't think the OP is when and hoe to beat anyone up. I think he/she is wondering about the consequences of self defense on a cruise ship.

do you think that the security are qualify to judged right or wrong ? Please, to what I see on the ships that a 12 year old has more knowledge when it comes to the law. I thought that security are rent a cop. Go from there

I'm going to agree with some of what Mach says and disagree with another part. First, anyone has to right to defend himself or herself if someone attempts to assault them without provocation. Yes, I agree security should be alerted immediately, but I'm not about to wait around for security while some a*shole is trying to take my head off.

Now as to Carnival's official policy, how does one define "illegal behavior?" How is someone defending himself or herself or their loved ones from someone assaulting them "illegal behavior?" After a few more than 20 years in law enforcement, I've seen more than my share of fights and I have to say that I can't recall ever arresting anyone who was determined to have been defending himself from the perpetrator. And ship's security is hardly qualified to thoroughly investigate such an incident. They get 20 minutes of training and handed a uniform that says security on the back. That's going to make you feel good? Carnival's official policy is a bit ambiguous since neither illegal behavior nor illegal activity is defined. I can assure Carnival that if I was put off a ship for defending myself from some jerk, they would be hearing from me for a long time to come.

The best way to deal with a drunk is not to talk to them AT ALL. Not one word. Once you start, they will not leave you alone and when you want to walk away that's when the trouble starts. There is nothing good to come from having a conversation with a drunk. Unless her name is Brittney or Lindsay.

Yep -- Running in the other direction as quickly as I can....Sounds great to me :)

I don't do that. I just don't answer when they start talking to me. I don't get off my bar stool and leave. After a few tries, either the bartender chases them away or they give up and try someone else.

Great for you but obnoxious drunk people in a bad mood scare me so I would rather just leave
