Onboard alcohol prices

cheapskate2

Recommended Posts

Being Brits and never having cruised with HAL, it seems that their alcohol prices are far in excess of what we have paid on P&O. Could anyone tell me who has travelled with HAL recently what we might expect to pay for a bottle of wine in the MDR and give me a bit more info about the in-stateroom alcohol package. Thanks.

Thanks very much for your help on this. We have booked through a UK travel agent and don't as yet have any paperwork. I will try to log on to the HAL site when our confirmation comes through.

Much as we are looking forward to our trip, I think it will be a completely different experience to the cruises we have done before, so I intend to keep reading these forums to get all the tips for newbies that I can!!

Welcome to Cruise Critic and do let us know how your experience turns out. It's always interesting and enlightening for fellow-cruisers to read comparisons with other cruise lines they have not yet had an opportunity to sail.

You asked about the price of wine in the MDR ... in case you're not aware, HAL does allow you to bring wine on board for consumption in your room. You can also bring it to the MDR with a corkage charge of $18.

Happy travels

Thank you so much for all that info. A very great help. It's always a great leap into the unknown when you travel with a different cruise line, especially when you feel that all the regulars on board have so much more insider knowledge than you do! But I'm sure the Hal regulars onboard will point us in the right direction.

We are doing a back-to-back cruise on Zuiderdam in April 2012 from Fort Lauderdale through the Panama Canal and through to San Diego and Vancouver where we are cruising to Alaska. We've been through the Panama Canal before with P&O and enjoyed it so much, we decided to go again. Alaska is a first, so any tips gratefully appreciated.

if you are arriving in ft lauderdale early -- you might consider stopping at 'total wine' to buy some bottles of wine to take on the ship with you for such a long cruise

the corkage fee in the dining room and bars/lounges is $18 per bottles

total wine is located in the harbor shops just off 17th street:

The spirits prices are certainly higher thsn we were paying on P&O - bottle gin and 12 tonics English pounds 16. We're mainly wine drinkers but we're used to inflated prices for wines in restaurants here in the UK usually with at least a 400 per cent mark-up. As we will be away for 29 days, think I should start saving for the bar bill now!

if you do not call a specific liquor brand $4.50 per drink which is pretty reasonable, compared to hotels and shore bars. Good value.

Oveall wine is pretty reasonable too. Much cheaper than UK

I think , compared to P&O nHolland will be rather a plesant suprise for you

I am not fond of the wine packages because they saddle you with a lot of stuff that you might not care for.. There are sone excellent wines that are good buys that are not in the packages they offer.

As a fellow European, I would agree with taking wine, and soda (pop) onboard. I bought a case of wine, slapped a Hal luggage lable on it, mentioned to the porters at fort Lauderdale cruise port that I really 'appreciate' their efforts to get it on board unbroken, and it arrived within a few hours in perfect condition.

You can also take on board wine purchased at ports of call.

Main dining room has the $18 per bottle corkage, but to be honest, I was only charged 3 times in the week even though some nights I took 2 bottles of wine to the MDR ;)

Also watch out for the happy hours in different locations on board where the second cocktail is only $1 extra !:D

remember that your 3 pin Uk plugs will not fit the Eurodam power outlets! You either need an american adapter for appliances that will work at 110v or a european adapter (like you take to Spain!) for appliances that need 220v

the happy hours vary by ship

when we were on the ryndam -- we did get the second cocktail for $1 more -- any brand -- made no difference -- that could be different now

then when we were on the nieuw amsterdam just a few weeks after the ryndam their happy hour was 'buy one drink and get the second one free' -- but there was a limit to which brands were included in this offer

On the Amsterdam recently, their 2-for-one rule was you had to take possession of both drinks at the same time and they had to be the same mixology. I always ended up with 2 martinis served to me at the same time and by the time I got to drinking the 2nd one, it was warm and undrinkable for me. Is this the typical way HAL does 2-for-one?

we got around that -- i would order my drink -- they would bring 2 -- charge for only 1 -- gave one of the drinks to dh -- thankfully we both drink the same thing

then when we ready for our second drink -- did the same process again

wasn't a problem

I knew I should have asked what my other half liked at cocktail time before I proposed! Oh well, 40 years later I'll just have to put up with a warm martini now and then.

Remember HAL's prices are in US$ - with the exchange rate the price really isn't that much higher - especially if the US dollar stays down. While we are Canadian the current exchange rate at the bank for us to buy pounds is $1.6017 so I am guessing around $1.63/4 US. - so around $26 - not too far away from the price for the gin and tonic package availalbe from HAL.

By the way, all of HAL's bottles are one litre bottles. You can order for your room :)

Not sure how long we will be in Fort Lauderdale before we board, but thanks for the tip. Our package includes a night in Miami so it may be minimal.

We're hoping to have a great time on our first experience with HAL. I am sure you will appreciate that us Brits are your poor relations now with our economy falling apart and our pensions devalued, so our pre-occupation with getting value for money knows no bounds! This particular cruise is our retirement present to ourselves and we're really looking forward to it - even if we have to run all over the ship looking for two-for-one drinks!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Cheapskate2, I am a fellow Brit who has booked the same cruise as you and was interested in your question and replies you received. The cruise sounds great and I'm sure will put P and O to shame with the service and food but not the drink prices unfortunately. One year to go today.
