Emmaizzy Posted May 17, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2011 I have been trying to find out how to avoid a hold on my card and decided to use cash. Not totally in love with that idea due to having left over dollars. On another thread an extremely helpful poster open my eyes to travelers cheques! Can anyone tell me if NCL charge any type of commission? I will be taking $ travelers cheques. Many thanks Emma
Barb Nahoumi Posted May 17, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2011 I have cashed Travelers Checks on board, and used them to pay part of my on board charges. No problem with them on the ship. However, I heard that some businesses in port do not accept them. I don't think that they put holds on credit cards, only debit cards. I use a credit card to establish an on board account. Springwater21 Posted May 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2011 we gave up buying travelers checks years ago. We were in Costa Rica, the merchants and even our hotel would not cash them. They said it takes too long, sometimes months to get the real money from the banks. We even lent a couple traveling on our tour money to pay fro their meal, as all they had was travelers checks..Years ago I did use them on NCL Sun, no problem, you could only cash so many a day. I always use a credit card, no hold on acct and I get reward points to use later..Dona
Emmaizzy Posted May 17, 2011 Author #4 Share Posted May 17, 2011 Hi Barb Did you have to pay a commission to charge to use your Travelers cheques, ie, if you paid over a $20 TC was it credited to your account as $20? I only hold a UK credit card - banks here offer terrible exchange rates on debit and credit cards then charge you a further 2.75% of purchases - totally outrageous! Thanks Emma

I only want to use $ Travelers Cheques to put against our onboard account. Regards Emma
che5904 Posted May 17, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 17, 2011 I've used travellers cheques to pay on my onboard account and cashed in the casino. Neither charged me anything, if it was $20U.S. I got $20 bill U.S. Make sure your bank makes them U.S. currency travellers cheques. Thats provided you can get that in the U.K. We can here in Canada. Just off the Pearl. Travelers checks not a problem at the pursers desk. Just sign and add your cabin number. The only problem I once encountered was 10-one dollar bills because the cash box didn't have a ten dollar bill. Cash a few checks before going ashore. I did find one merchant in The Ft Lauderdale area liquor store who wouldn't take my check for my wine stash I refused to put on my Visa. garycarla Posted May 18, 2011 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2011 We always take at least two credit cards for cheap insurance. We also take $2-$3k in cash. Never a problem. Not sure why people think carrying cash is such a big deal.
