Where should we stay in Venice and....

Unless you have heart set on a particular hotel or location, it may be easier to choose the method of transportation that appeals to you before choosing a hotel in Venice. Here's the gist:

1 - Take a private water taxi to the hotel from the pier (about 60 euros for 1-4 passengers) and take another private water taxi in the morning from the hotel to the airport (about 100 euros for 1-4 passengers) This will get you to/from any hotel in the city that has a boat dock -- any area of the city, any style of hotel, any price range. This is the most expensive option, but your hotel choices are pretty much unconstrained.

2 - Take an Alilaguna water bus from the pier to the stop nearest your hotel (6.50 euros per person.) In the morning, take Alilaguna from the stop nearest your hotel to the airport (6.5 euros per person.) This really only makes sense for those with hotels in the San Marco area or the Lido, and will require some walking between the stops and your hotel (most likely, crossing bridges with luggage.)

3 - Take the People Mover (1 euro per person) from the port area to Piazzele Roma, and stay in a nearby hotel. In the morning, take the #5 ACTV bus fron Piazzele Roma to the airport (5 euros per person.) This is the least expensive option, but limits your hotel choices to those at Piazele Roma or in nearby Santa Croce or Carnareggio areas. There will be some walking involved with this option, and (except for the immediate area of Piazzele Roma) there will be bridges to cross....with your luggage.

4- Take the People Mover (1 euro/pp) to Piazzele Roma, then continue on from there via vaporetto to the stop nearest your hotel (6.5 euros per person), then walk the rest of the way to your hotel. In the morning, walk back to the nearest vaporetto stop and take it back to Piazzele Roma (6.5 euros person) and then take the bus #5 (5 euros/pp) from there to the airport. You will have the flexibility of using most any hotel, but in exchange, you will have to be willing to manage luggage on boats and bridges.

5 - Take the people mover to Piazelle Roma (1 euro per person), then store your luggage at the Left Luggage location there (5 euros/bag/24 hours.) Then spend the day in Venice, collecting your luggage when you are ready to leave for the evening. Take take bus #5 (5 euros/pp) from Piazzelle Roma to a hotel near the airport, and stay there overnight. In the morning, take a hotel shuttle or bus #5, to the terminal.

6- Take a taxi (about 30 euros/car) from the pier to a hotel near the airport, crash there until your flight the next day. While the price may seem reasonable, you will miss seeing Venice, which is a really, really high price to pay for what I admit will be a much-needed nap. :)

Once you know what transportation option is most fviable or your party, then you may want to give some thought to the following, so that others can do a better job of making specific hotel suggestions:

  • Do you want a traditional Italian hotel or something more modern?
  • How much luggage do you need to manage and what's your level of physical fitness? Can you carry it short distances and over bridges?
  • Would you prefer to be in a quieter area or in the center of the action?
  • Are there any budget considerations you need to keep in mind?

One small correction. The express bus from Piazzale Roma to the airport is run by ATVO and costs 5 Euro. http://www.atvo.it/index.php?lang=en

There is also a local public bus run by ACTV that costs 3 Euro, but this bus makes many stops along the way and doesn't have storage space for luggage. http://www.actv.it/en/movingmainland/faresautobus

We stayed in Ca' San Giorgio after disembarkation a couple of weeks ago. It is located in a quiet residential neighborhood a short walk from the Riva di Biasio vaporetto stop. We chose it because it was very highly-rated on Trip Advisor's list of B&Bs in Venice and it was in our price-range.

Like many older buildings in Venice, there is no elevator, so you should be able to climb stairs. It's located in a residential neighborhood so you will have plenty of opportunities to wander Venice neighborhoods and see a side of Venice that many tourists miss. DH and I loved walking and exploring the little neighborhoods so we considered this a plus.

Another BIG plus is that the 2 sisters who ran it treated us as though we were long-lost (and much anticipated) family members who had come to stay in their "home". They were very enthusiastic about helping us have the best vacation possible and cheerfully set aside as much time as we needed to patiently answer any questions. The continental breakfast was fresh and plentiful and was served in a very cheerful breakfast room.

The website is http://www.casangiorgio.com. We stayed in the Columbina and saw the Bauta and can testify that both rooms look like their website photos.

I'd say that Locanda Orseolo (website mentioned in bobalink's post#7) fits the bill in all three of your categories. Close to St Peter's Square, located in a small gated courtyard, family run. Wonderful made to order breakfast. On a small canal with water taxi access. It was perfect for me.
