lais Posted June 10, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2011 I am looking at a 35 day cruise. The longest I have cruised is 2 weeks and always felt it would be nice to have at least another week. Do those of you who have taken these long cruises get cabin fever or does the time fly by just like on a 2 week cruise? I will not be in a suite, just a regular balcony cabin which is small (eek) and that is of some concern and the Nautica is not a very large ship. Can any of you share your experience with me? fragras Posted June 10, 2011 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We recently completed a 45-day cruise on the Nautica from Hong Kong to Athens. We had a lot of sea days even though we had 21 port stops. I loved it, but I must confess I like to relax on vacation. We read a lot, played trivia twice a day and sure had a lot of great meals. There were a lot of activities scheduled every day, so you could participate or not as you desired. I don't know what itinerary you're looking at but, if the weather is warm, lots of people spend time on the pool deck. If you're looking to be entertained every minute or want a lot of nightlife, then Nautica may not be for you. After the 9:30pm show, only night owls seem to be around. A Knitter Posted June 10, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2011 I can't help you on 35 days, but can tell you 25 days was the maximum for me on the Regatta to the Amazon. I had an aft cabin which I truly enjoyed and after 14 days, started to watch how much i was eating and drinking :D. I was ready to disembark after that length of time. I am sure other members could stay on indefinitely.
PurpleCow Posted June 10, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We did the 26 day Amazon cruise and I could have stayed on board indefinitely. I think Bill had had enough, though.
Rare LHT28 Posted June 10, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 10, 2011 The longest we have done is 32 days in OV cabin We tried to stay on for the next cruise but it was overbooked ;) It is not like you spend 24/7 in the cabin Lyn

Got kicked out everynight at midnight on Celebrity because I'd be the only one playing. We do prefer quiet and low key so that is fine. Thanks for the reply. I like that you said you would have stayed on for the next cruise. 35 days is sounding better all the time.
mrsfish Posted June 10, 2011 #9 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We did the Hong Kong to Athens spring of 2010 and loved it. The blend of sea days and busy port days was perfect. I think it was also good because we had three trips away from the ship during the 35 days. We went to Ankor Wat (private tour) for three nights leaving the ship in Saigon and rejoining in Bangkok. Then we left again in India and toured privately the Taj Mahal and Dehli leaving in Goa and rejoining in Mumbai two days later. The last trip was to spend an overnight off the ship in Luxor at the Winter Palace. I think that those three trips plus the days at sea made the 35 days fly by. I did plan almost of our tours privately using recommendations from cruise critic and some friends too. We found our cabin A1 fine because most of the time was spent on deck and there were lots of fun activities planned on the sea days with the crew!! So one can leave the ship and catch up with it in another location? I looked at Hong Kong to Athens but the date won't work out for us so I have booked the Cape Town to Singapore and I want to be everywhere it stops so no side trips for us. My husband really wants to go to India but that will have to be another trip. It's too bad they don't stop there on this itinerary. I have a major cruise addiction so I think I will be alright with the 35 days. I'll find out when I get there.
minz56 Posted June 10, 2011 #11 Share Posted June 10, 2011 I haven't done this length of time on O but have on Cunard. Personally I love long cruises. You get into a rhythm on the ship, get to know the staff and make lots of new friends with plenty of time to develop those friendships. The ship becomes your home and you get to know its nooks and crannies. Usually I don't want to get off! Having said this I couldn't bear to have a port intensive 35 day cruise. It would just be too exhausting. My ideal is at least 2 sea days for every port day on this length of cruise. Enjoy!

capecodder2 Posted June 10, 2011 #13 Share Posted June 10, 2011 The longest we have done is 35 days (Hong Kong/Athens) with a couple of 25 and 32 days at other times. I have not been ready to get off any one of them. 12 days is the shortest cruise I would even consider. Most long cruises are not port intensive as there is a lot of ocean out there to cover. If you watch what you eat from Day 1, you will be fine. Go and enjoy.
tanny18 Posted June 10, 2011 #14 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We did a back to back with a total of 34 days (Australia/NZ) and if the ship was going someplace else, we would have stayed on longer. There is much to do on the ship, and of course the ports were fabulous. And actually, I don't think we gained more than a couple of pounds. Watch what you eat and you'll be fine!!! We just finished 20 days and will be on a 35 day in December!! Arlene;)
lais Posted June 10, 2011 Author #15 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We just finished 20 days and will be on a 35 day in December!! Arlene;) Are you the doing Capetown cruise? That is the one I booked. I won't join the roll call until final payment next month as I am still in the planning stages and don't want to get involved unless I am sure I am going. I wouldn't like to make plans and get to know everyone and then drop out. Arlene, I will be sure to watch carefully what I eat. Ooooh! look at that dessert! I will watch that dessert while I am eating it to make sure no one takes my plate away.

Hi mrsfish, We're booked on the Nautica 4/9/12 Hong Kong-Athens. Would love to know what private tours you took, what you did and how much they cost. Assume you missed Cochin, Mumbai and Saigon. Oceania's excursions are very expensive. Also not sure whether I want to miss Mumbai and Saigon. Thanks, drwini5
Tutuma Posted June 10, 2011 #17 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We took the 35 day Cape Town to Singapore cruise. It was awesome! Lots of time to get to know some great people. Never had enough time to do all that we wanted on board. Sea days were yummy and gorgeous. On the last day, many of us agreed, it was difficult to leave. In our opinon, if you love cruising, the longer the cruise the better!
Rare LHT28 Posted June 10, 2011 #18 Share Posted June 10, 2011 I think it all depends on the cruise & how you handle long trips away We went away on a land trip for 2 mths I could not wait to get home We did a 7 day cruise with NCL (EVER AGAIN) could not wait to get off...I would have jumped ship on day 2 if I could have  Long cruise with Oceania I could live a board ;) Some people like longer cruises some just like 10-14 days Enjoy Lyn

Why not join the Roll Call and see what others are saying. I know Steve on the Board is looking for people to join an overnight tour in Bagan. I booked one but we have 12 and he wants to get some more so he can go as well. There are many of us who have taken on the "tour" responsibility. MightyQuinn Posted June 10, 2011 #20 Share Posted June 10, 2011 We have taken several longer cruises on lines other than Oceania. Our longest was a 38-day cruise from RIO-SEA. We enjoyed these cruises but learned that longer isn't always better. For us, the sweet spot lies somewhere between 25 to 30 days, with a nice mix of interesting ports and sea days. This is our "ideal" length for a cruise, although we very much enjoy taking much longer land trips. Somehow, the routine of shipboard life gets a little stale for us and we yearn for terra firma. YMMV.

This will be a good test to see if I need to quash that dream or continue dreaming. In my dream I have a nice suite with a big balcony. I have seen a pic of the shower and it is so small and the cabin is small and we do spend a lot of time on our balcony so at least we have a little space there. I am glad no one has written back saying they were climbing the bulkheads. It seems to be a positive experience for many and it has been nice reading about everyones experiences. no fuss travel Posted June 11, 2011 #23 Share Posted June 11, 2011 Now you could all be like that lady that sails with RCI. She lives on the ship permanently, meets new people each cruise, knows exactly what she will be eating each day, has staff that looks after her wants and needs, and has constant company. Her version is that it is cheaper financially to live on the ship all year than it is to live in the states. She has medical care nearby if she needs it and all her other needs are met. She said that it was more reasonable than living in a retirement home.

meow! Posted June 11, 2011 #25 Share Posted June 11, 2011 ... it is cheaper financially to live on the ship all year than it is to live in the states... We seriously doubt that! Of course, it depends on how you live (not travel) on land, not in a luxury hotel plus sumptuos food and air ticket, and who does that on land year round? If you just stay in an ordinary home and eat daily food, it is much cheaper than crusing.
