how much money your wife spends pre-cruise

I can totally understand wanting all new things. Cruising is so fabulous your wife will feel like a princess and it's so much fun when you feel beautiful!

You probably won't need a lot of what other people have on their lists and you'll probably figure out there are things you need that no one else does but it's all part of the fun.

Have a great cruise!

I could've paid for another cruise with that :p

I don't have a wife but I typically don't buy much. I don't think I've bought anything for this cruise because I already have everything I need. Bought a few summer clothes but I needed them anyway.

I have to admit between Clothes and other Stuff I did go a bit crazy for our 1st family cruise but had so much fun. as dh was like are u nuts??? lol..this time I have a good excuse ive lost over 10 lbs already and well Will need a new Wardrobe.as we sail on the Liberty for thanksgiving...lol My daughter also needs some new clothes as they wear uniforms in school, and my son buys his own clothes :)

Enjoy Your Cruise....You will have a Blast and trust me you will be booking more so she can utilize those clothes unless she is like me and says well its a new trip time for some new clothes...lol

I hate to admit it, but I spent a lot more than 1K on our first cruise. I bought two formals (still had formal nights on-board) and 7 other dresses to wear to dinner/lunch: I also had to purchase shoes for each outfit (morning, noon, & night), taking into consideration that I couldn't be seen wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row

Wow, this is kind of embarrassing.....I also made a spreadsheet for my DH's clothes/shoes and bought enough clothes for him to change 3 times a day. Of course we brought his tuxedo and couple new suits for the other evenings.

I still go out and purchase a couple of new clothes/shoes, but nowhere near what I did then :D.

We are taking our first cruise on destiny July 7th.

Wife is going all crazy reading all the packing list on this site.

So far she has spent $1000 buying stuff for the cruise.

over hundred dollar on medicine/lotions etc.

Clothes, Flash light, Alarm clock, shoes, bungee cord, and bunch of other stuff. Some of the big ticket items are dresses for her for dinner etc.

all kinds of stuff from the packing list on this board.

How much do you guys typically spend before the cruise? Is $1000 excessive or is it normal?

I will tell you what I tell my husband. I spend what I think I need to, I work too, any questions???? :-)

Of course he thinks he needs to spend money at Home Depot all the time :p

I will tell you the first cruise I bought all kinds of gowns and even a tux for hubby, went nuts. Believe me chances are you'll be hooked and it's all gonna be used again soon.

Cheers and have an awesome cruise, Carole

Sadly on our first cruise I didn't spend too much... I didn't really know what to expect. Maybe got a new swimsuit, and a cheap dress... sunscreen, a few other things...

On our second cruise is when I discovered CruiseCritic, which made me think of all kinds of things...

I however did NOT spend 100 bucks on medicines and lotions. I got a 10 dollar first aid kit, added a few things from our medicine cabinet at home and done. I also maybe spend 20-30 bucks on travel toiletries.

There are really only two things I really want to get before a cruise now... a new swimsuit, and maybe a new sundress (even though I have a ton of them).....

Better not let my husband see this, or HE will start making spreadsheets. You should see his "travel briefings" that he makes for each trip we take. Here are some example quotes for an upcoming trip to L.A. for an anime expo: "All bags must be packed and sealed by 2100L...Note that departure is a critical item...We will be traveling in Red Car...Red Car's radio will be used by and controlled by the Driver in Charge (DIC) to maintain situational awareness and to gather road intelligence. Complaints to the DIC will not be tolerated....Any device emitting audible rap will be subject to summary ejection from the vehicle...Starbucks Targets of Opportunity (STOs) may be exploited...." This goes on for literally (no joke!) four pages for each and every journey we take!

On behalf of the cruise critic members, I apologize. It appears your wife has decided to compile all the recommendations for packing items and buy them all! We are all just trying to be helpful. Everyone's list is different and shouldn't be combined to make a grand finale list.

I don't want to say you should reign her in, but maybe it's time to have a talk about the items and have her explain how she plans to get all this new stuff into bags......and carry all these bags on board.

As long as you can afford it.....let her have fun!

We travel very light....we're in the group that believes a vacation is the time to relax and enjoy.

Whatever I don't spend on evening gowns and new clothing I donate to the casino fund........ :)

I did the same thing, maybe not to that extent, but I bought "things" according to CC which I thought I would need. Turned out I didn't need half the things, but that was ok. I was prepared just in case.

Now, I pack in one small carry on (same with DH) and we share a garment bag. I pack as little as possible.

Enjoy your first cruise!!!

Sometimes I feel like a saint remaining married to that man....OMG it's been 20 years this July! Here's another quote for your entertainment: "Departure will be at 1500L and will proceed to San Jose where Jerald will board. The car will then proceed down US-101 to CA-156 where it will cross to I-5 at Los Banos. Casa De Fruita is a possible stop for dinner on the ingress....Drivers In Charge (DICs) will rotate in loosely defined manner based on driver fatigue....Andersen's Pea Soup is a possible stop on the egress...." Yes, he actually refers to "the car" rather than saying "we" and really uses the words ingress and egress. Who does that?

Bungie cord you don't need, you can use the door stop that they use when cleaning rooms, just put it in door jamb, works great!!! We leave our watches by the side of the bed for time (don't need clocks) And use the phone wake up calls PLUS room service coffee as wake up insurance!! So no alarm clock needed (I think the electric clocks have a difficulty keeping time on the ship) I always take a assortment of OTC meds we might need, but most of those you have on hand and don't need to buy. Sun block is a must and can be expensive. My biggest expense was clothing, she'll calm down after the first. We have seen people using night lights, in a inside cabin. We always have a balcony but can still be really dark, if you leave the bathroom light on and shut it the light shines through the cracks, kinda a perfect nightlight. Remember if you need anything she brought, she paid wayyyyyyyyyyy less for it than you would from the gift shop on board. I had to buy hydrocortisone cream once cause I'm sun sensitive and love to snorkle. OMG expensive!!!

Cheers and try not to stress, you're gonna have an awesome time!!

Let them cruise and learn:D It all comes with the experience... I know my 1st cruise I brought a carry full of shoes LMAO... only wore 2 pairs... plus 2 other suitcases full of clothes... now after 10 cruises I am down to one duffle bag with everything and it is under 50lbs:p

Too Funny!!!! Our first cruise was on the Sun Princess to Alaska, combined with a landtour for a total of 11 days (13 with pre-post hotels). Two of us had a total of SIX BAGS....even bought new luggage for the cruise!!!!! One was full of shoes and our coats and jackets - which we didn't need as it turned out to be upper 70's there. LOVED IT!!!!!!!! Now when we cruise, depending on where we go, we usually share one 28 inch suitcase and each have a carryon, and I will usually have a beach bag with me. When I cruise with the "Girls from Work" on our getaways (usually 3-4 day cruises), we will each have a carryon and a beach bag to carryon the boat, and still only use maybe half of what we bring. How Exciting for you!!!!! You NEVER forget your first cruise!!!!!! ENJOY!!!! I was on the Destiny in 2008 out of San Juan PR!!!!! LOVED IT!!

You have no idea how much you can NEED if you are a woman!

How true. Reminds me of one my favorite Cathy comic strips. She is packing for a trip, and says "364 days a year I have nothing to wear. The day I pack to leave for my vacation, it's all essential."

Well, since you asked, here's another: "US-101 and CA-99 are possible alternative routes in case of weather/traffic delays....the zoo-factor will have to be high for an alternative route to be considered." I asked him what the heck a "zoo-factor" is and he said he means how much of a zoo (i.e., how crowded) highway 5 is. Of course, we all knew he meant that, right?

Here's another: "Each non-dining stop is considered a "pit stop" where the goal is to stop as briefly as possible. On approach to a pit-stop, the DIC will assign jobs (e.g. remove trash, wash windows, check tires, etc.) to other occupants. These jobs must be accomplished prior to heading to the gift shop in search of biological relief, tasty snacks or irreplaceable souvenirs."
