Treatmesweet Posted July 9, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2011 I am looking at cruises in September and trying to decide which area to go to. Alaska 7 day or New England 7 day. Which is better for senior in wheelchair?
kitty9 Posted July 9, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 9, 2011 I don't think there's much difference with regards to age or ability. I've done both and each have their pluses and minuses. If you want something with more wildlife, I'd go with Alaska. One negative about the New England cruise, many ports could be tender ports, and it may make it difficult, if not impossible, for your mom to leave the ship. PennyAgain Posted July 9, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 9, 2011 Alaska will be somewhat easier but you may have longer flights to get there and back. Juneau, Ketchikan, Whittier, Seward and Skagway Alaska are all ports where the ships dock. The few ships that go to Sitka have to tender.
mamaofami Posted July 11, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 11, 2011 If you go on Holland America, the only tender port is Bar Harbor.
Splinter Posted July 12, 2011 #5 Share Posted July 12, 2011 Just a warning, if she is a full time wheelchair user and needs a wheelchair accessible cabin, you are unlikely to find that available on such short notice for either destination. We usually book our cruises 6-12 months in the future due to the very limited availability of these cabins.
gerif Posted July 12, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 12, 2011 There was a young man in a power chair on our last NE cruise - he had no problem getting around, including the tender to Bar Harbor.
