afcj1 Posted July 24, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 24, 2011 We're doing a RIL tour and many will be going into the Accademia, while others will be waiting outside. Is there anything in the area to do, see? Thanks in advance:)
ab0si Posted July 24, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 24, 2011 I can not conceive of a reason not to see Michelangelo's sculptures. Every time I go to Florence I see them -- at least once, At any rate, my suggestion would be grab a gelato.
chipmaster Posted July 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 24, 2011 I went shopping, 18 years ago I saw it with not a crowd in the museum and had not interest to fight the ridiculous crowds. This time around our RIL driver took the rest of our party 13 in, and I went shopping with my wife :D FWIW you can see a replica sitting in the plaza. We're doing a RIL tour and many will be going into the Accademia, while others will be waiting outside. Is there anything in the area to do, see? Thanks in advance:)
helencw Posted July 24, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 24, 2011 You could ask the tour guides for a recommendation. There are so many wonderful things to see that the group wouldn't have time for in a one day visit. Maybe you could climb the Duomo? San Marco is right at the Academia: http://www.florencepictures.com/piazzas-squares/piazza-san-marco/ Spedale degli Innocente is 2 blocks away: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ospedale_degli_Innocenti Leonardo Museum is very close http://en.firenze.waf.it/museo_dett/29-other-museums/241-leonardo-museum.html Maybe San Lorenzo with Michelangelo's beautiful Medici Chapel? Just walking around with a gelato is fine too!

helencw Posted July 24, 2011 #6 Share Posted July 24, 2011 I find this an interesting discussion, and I respect eveyone's opinion on whether they should see this beautiful work (whether for the first time or each time they visit Florence) despite the distracting crowds. Here is a presentation by art scholars on the David's in Florence by Donatello, Verocchio, and Michelangelo in a historical and political context: http://smarthistory.org/Michelangelo-David.html There are other sculptures by Michelangelo in Florence- in San Lorenzo (Medici tombs) and the Bargelo (Bacchus) which do not have the crowds. If not, you are only about three or four blocks from the Duomo, as I remember.

helencw Posted July 24, 2011 #10 Share Posted July 24, 2011 Actually all of the popular tourist sights in Florence are within a small area that is very walkable, so it is possible to split up and not be too far away from each other. I'm sure you will all have a grand time, afcj1! I follow some of the "crazies" reviews, and one day when my youngest is grown (all your cruises are not during school holidays), I would love to cruise with the "crazies"! Again, great info, thanks:) The Crazies cruises are a lot of fun. The folks are all very nice and it's a great time. You're right...no traveling during the summer or most school holidays. Of course you could always leave the kiddies at home with someone, while you enjoy a fantastic cruise;):D Just sayin...:)
