What to do when the group is in Accademia

I can not conceive of a reason not to see Michelangelo's sculptures. Every time I go to Florence I see them -- at least once,

At any rate, my suggestion would be grab a gelato.

I went shopping, 18 years ago I saw it with not a crowd in the museum and had not interest to fight the ridiculous crowds. This time around our RIL driver took the rest of our party 13 in, and I went shopping with my wife :D

FWIW you can see a replica sitting in the plaza.

We're doing a RIL tour and many will be going into the Accademia, while others will be waiting outside.

Is there anything in the area to do, see?

Thanks in advance:)

You could ask the tour guides for a recommendation. There are so many wonderful things to see that the group wouldn't have time for in a one day visit. Maybe you could climb the Duomo?

San Marco is right at the Academia:

Spedale degli Innocente is 2 blocks away:

Leonardo Museum is very close

Maybe San Lorenzo with Michelangelo's beautiful Medici Chapel?

Just walking around with a gelato is fine too!

I find this an interesting discussion, and I respect eveyone's opinion on whether they should see this beautiful work (whether for the first time or each time they visit Florence) despite the distracting crowds.

Here is a presentation by art scholars on the David's in Florence by Donatello, Verocchio, and Michelangelo in a historical and political context:

There are other sculptures by Michelangelo in Florence- in San Lorenzo (Medici tombs) and the Bargelo (Bacchus) which do not have the crowds.

You should reconsider not going into Accademia, it is wonderful, especially David.

If not, you are only about three or four blocks from the Duomo, as I remember.

Thanks for all of these suggestions. We have 29 ppl on our tour and not everyone wants to do the same gallery's.

Again thanks:)

Actually all of the popular tourist sights in Florence are within a small area that is very walkable, so it is possible to split up and not be too far away from each other.

I'm sure you will all have a grand time, afcj1! I follow some of the "crazies" reviews, and one day when my youngest is grown (all your cruises are not during school holidays), I would love to cruise with the "crazies"!

Again, great info, thanks:)

The Crazies cruises are a lot of fun. The folks are all very nice and it's a great time. You're right...no traveling during the summer or most school holidays. Of course you could always leave the kiddies at home with someone, while you enjoy a fantastic cruise;):D

Just sayin...:)
