Best time of the year for Europe (Eastern Med.) ?

We're planning our first trip to Europe (eastern med) and wonder what is the best time to get there. We're looking at late august or early september. Is it a good choice ? We liked hot temperature, good for beach tour and also for sigthseeing.

Any other suggestions/time of the year ?

We've gone swimming in Sorrento, Italy in early to mid-September and it was lovely! Airfares are generally lower, as well, and there aren't as many tourists as in August. For many Europeans, August is their vacation month so we try to avoid it like the plague.

If you like it hot you could try early June. It would be warmer than in May but still not as crowded as late June, July or August. But the airfare getting there, and likely the cruise, will be a little cheaper in May or Sept. and it would still be warm enough to swim.

Early September is a great time for the East Med. The weather is still very warm but the crowds have gone. Second week in September would be a great time weather-wise and also when the prices really start to come down. The sea has warmed up nicely over the summer too, so it's much nicer in the sea than in May or June :)

If you want very hot late July/early August.

Downside are the crowds.

It will still be quite hot in late August.
