Can anyne recommend a location, or hotel in Buenas Aires....

Two people who stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel highly recommended that hotel.

We trusted their judgment and are booked there for next year for two days.

Can anyne recommend a location, or hotel in Buenas Aires....

You can research Bs As hotels at www.tripadvisor.com .

The Claridge Hotel isn't bad, but it is located in the noisy central business district. The Intercontinental is a fine hotel, but also not optimally located. If you are staying just one or two nights, post/pre cruise, and can afford a luxury hotel then you might consider:

1. the Marriot near Plaza San Martin at the foot of Florida St,

2. Faena or Hilton in Puerto Madero

3. Sheraton in Retiro

4. Sofitel or Caesar Park in Recoleta

5. Four Seasons in Recoleta

6. Alvear Palace in Recoleta

7. Mio Buenos Aires in Recoleta

These are the top hotels in Bs As. Notwithstanding the differently named barrios, they all well located within a mile of each other. All are classic establishments except #7 which is a brand new boutique hotel owned by the family that owns the Catana Zapata winery - one of the most well respected in all of Argentina. The rooms are beautiful. Each has a wall mounted wine spigot from which you can pour a frsh glass of the family wine. The amount and vintage of the wine depends on the category of your room. Prices with tax start at about US$ 300 /night. It would be my recommendation.

I have stayed in a number of hotels in Buenos Aires. I agree with Pmacher's assessment about the Intercontinental and Claridge. Neither are optimally located. The Intercontinental is a fine hotel, though you should be forwarned that internet access is very pricey. However, after dark the area surrounding the hotel is forlorn due to its location near commercial and governmental offices, which are empty at night. But if you will only be in the area for one or two nights pre or post cruise and most of your activity will be during the daytime....the location offers certain advantages. It is close to the Plaza de Mayo, where several sites are located. The Casa Rosada, where Evita once stood on the balcony addressing the masses; The National Cathedral where San Martin (the George Washington of Argentina) is entombed; and the historic Cabildo....The Intercontinental is also within walking distance of Cafe Tortoni, an historic cafe noted as a hang out for intellectuals, writers. and tango musicians as well as offering easy access to Calle Florida, the downtown pedestrian mall (watch out for your valuables as there are more pickpockets than tourists and more McDonalds than you ever wished to see in one location)....

If you are going to be in Buenos Aires for several days there are many areas of town that are more pleasant than the neighborhood near the Intercontinental--Recoleta, Palermo Soho, Puerto Madero and the opposite end of downtown near Retiro/Plaza San Martin in particular. But for a night or so, if the price is right the Intercontinental is a good choice. Just don't go walking around at night and you will be fine. Taxis are cheap and plentiful so this is not a problem.

Just another thought about BA hotels: if you are planning a trip to Iguazu with an overnight, the Sheraton in the park has a great location. Combine that stay with a Sheraton in BA and you most likely have enough points for a future stay somewhere.

Thank you for your generous offer. I am looking for a hotel for 3 nights before our cruise from Buenos Aires. Do you know anything bout the Wilton Hotel? Can you recommend any lower-priced hotels in the Recoleta district?

Look at the Lion d'or, hotel Belair or art suites as alternative options

In the same price range. I would recommend all three of these hotels over the Wilton. The Wilton is well located on Callao, but the other properties are in the same Recoleta neighborhood and have better rooms in my opinion. Also you might inquire on Trip Advisor. The Buenos Aires forum is very active with lots of knowledgeable posters. Ricardoba in particular knows a lot about hotels in Recoleta.

Hi dr_dawgy... always enjoy reading your postings on CC and TripAdvisor.. thank you for all the help you provide to all of us ! ! !

We are going to be in BA over the New Year's Holiday, we arrive early on Dec 30 and we are taking a cruise on Jan 02. We are considering two 'hotels'... EuroPlaza Hotel & Suites at 327 Montevideo (B&B) and Trianon Residences in Recoleta (Apt). We thought EuroPlaza would work because of their proximity to 'subway' station, more central location for sightseeing and good reviews. The Trianon Apt also has good reviews and is in the 'recommended' Recoleta area, but it does not seem to have good public transporation connections.

What do you think? Should we forget about being near 'subway' stations and just do taxis everywhere? How do you think the New Year's holiday period would affect transportation and sightseeing?

Thanks.

I agree, we've stayed there twice, and loved it both times

I've stayed at the Claridge twice and never had a noise issue. (one room in front and one in back) What this hotel does have is extremely small bathrooms. Personally I like the downtown location but I have no problem walking around, last time even walked back from Recoleta to the hotel.

For me the Hilton Buenos Aires at Puerto Madero is the BEST HOTEL in Buenos Aires due to its location, rooms and the beautiful lobby.

It is close to everything and at night it is really safe...

I think that the Intercontinental is a really nice hotel but at night that neighborhood is not too safe.

So good to hear this! I'm a Hilton HHonors member, and was able to get a good deal at the BA Hilton for our upcoming post-cruise, so we're staying there. Good to hear it was a good choice, since it didn't have a lot of planning on my part!

You have a LOT of dinning places there! And it is a really nice place Puerto Madero! It is a business area too.

What you need to know if that here we dine from 8pm to 1am so the restaurants may open a bit late for you...but I think that being in a tourist place some of them may open early....

BA is a city that never sleeps....the clubs (I dont know how do you call it, the place where you dance) here open at 1am or so...

If you need something, please tell me!

We'll be happy to hear of any dining recommendations. I know we'll be tired so places within walking distance of the BA Hilton would be welcomed. Also places that are reasonably priced and have some local specialities. My husband would be most interested in a steakhouse; I'm a more adventurous and will try most anything.

Thanks, much appreciated! My wife and I are late-night people anyway, so the Spanish/Brazilian way of life is much more up our alley. Since we don't have a lot of time in BA at the end of our cruise, we're going to take the time to see and experience as much as we can in the short time. We arrive from Iguazu Falls the afternoon of Monday, 12 Dec. Then our flight leaves very late at night on Tues, 13 Dec. (10:15 PM)

If you're offering, YES, I very much could use some travel advice! Specifically:

- I'm a big Hard Rock Cafe fan, so we'll visit the BA HRC for sure. I don't necessarily have to eat there, so maybe we'll just get a snack there and buy a bit of memorabilia in the early evening on the 12th before the real dinner.

- Could you recommend a very good restaurant for the night of the 12th, and maybe the 13th? My wife is a vegetarian, but is always able to find something to eat. We would like to experience the authentic fare--perhaps a steakhouse?

- What would you say are the MUST DO things in BA, that we could experience in about 30 hours of whirlwind?

- On the 13th, we'll be in the situation where we'll need to check out of the Hilton, but flights don't leave until late night. What would you recommend we do for this, and with bags?

We're usually just fine touring and sight-seeing on our own, but are open to using travel guides if it'd be better.

Thanks!

It's a small Hard Rock Cafe, but we had excellent ribs and a local beer there last year. Merchandise wasn't too extensive.

Pedro Werberg (http://www.amigodebuenosaires.com/) is an excellent guide!

Damosen, Thank you for your kind offer to help. We are considering staying at the Duque Hotel Boutique & Spa. Are you familiar with this hotel and area, and what are your thoughts?

Also, we would like to do a 2 night visit to Iguazu Falls and also a 3-4 night trip to Mendoza for winery tours. Our cruise sails from Buenos Aires on March 19, 2012, and we will be flying to Buenos Aires early to do both local sight seeing and the 2 above trips. Because of multiple pieces of lugage we will be flying with from Florida, I think flying into Buenos Aires first would be best. Any help you can give on the best way to do these 2 side trips would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with that hotel but it has great reviews and the location is really good not excellent. I give it a 8/10.

About your trip....here we do not have direct flights between Iguazu and Mendoza. So you need to make a layover in Buenos Aires.

I recommend you to flight here in Argentina with the airline Lan because Aerolineas Argentinas it is really a bad airline.

I would give you and example...

From Buenos Aires to Mendoza it's 1:55hrs.

If you can wake up early going from Mendoza to Iguazu it is 5.30hrs. (It includes the layover in Buenos Aires)

And going from Iguazu to Buenos Aires it is 1:55hrs.

I do not know the exact dates of your trip but making a false reservation (on March 2012) at Lan. This 3 flights (actually 4 including the layover)

Departure March 8, 2012 from Buenos Aires yo Mendoza

Departure March 12, 2012 from Mendoza to Iguazu

Departure March 15, 2012 from Iguazu to Buenos Aires

TOTAL: u$s 893 pp

It is funny because for me (Argentinian) it is u$s433

About hotels in this places.....for Mendoza I do not know because i never been there but i know that there are a few nice Sheraton's there.

For Iguazu I recommend you the Sheranton Iguazu because it is inside the National Park so you can go to the falls even when the park is closed.

They have a few rooms with a balcony overlooking the falls (ask for that).

http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1152

And if you want real luxury I have two choices:

In the middle of the jungle (outside the national park) I recommend you the Loi Suites Iguazu.

http://www.loisuites.com.ar/es/iguazu-hotel/home

Another luxury hotel is the Iguazu Grand Hotel (member of the leading hotels of the world) this has a casino too.

http://www.iguazugrand.com/es

I know that you do not have time but the south of Argentina (Patagonia) it is something amazing. Bariloche, Ushuaia, El Calafate, etc.

If you need something else....please ask

Sorry for the late answer..

-There is a Hard Rock cafe here but it is not like the ones i went in the US.

It is in Recoleta if you want to go.

-If you want an excellent dinner! Go to Sorrentos at Puerto Madero, near the Hilton (2 blocks) The adress it is: Alicia Moreau de Justo 410

It is a little bit expensive but you will have great seafood, pasta, and more.

For a steakhouse here we have the best meat in the world!

You will find at Puerto Madero a lot of choices for that. If i remember a specific restorant I will tell you.

-La boca and Caminito (a little unsafe, so be carefull), Recoleta, 9 de Julio Avenue, Puerto Madero, Palermo for great restaurants, Casa Rosada. Later I continue with this.

- For that moment I suggest you to go on our double decker busses. Take the yellow one!

There is a stop of this bus right outside the Hilton so ask there and they will tell you where exactly.

This buses are excellent because they go to all the important sights of BAand they have audio so you will learn a little bit.

If i remember something else I will tell you...

If you need something please ask.

Have a nice trip!
