ondeckatsea Posted August 24, 2011 #51 Share Posted August 24, 2011 No shaking here in the White Mountains of NH. It must be all the granite underneath us. All we have to worry about is the hurricane "Irene", an occasional tornado and worst of all, forest fires.
twoforcruise Posted August 24, 2011 #52 Share Posted August 24, 2011 That could be onedeckatsea. It's interesting what they say about the difference in the ground between west coast and east coast. The east coast is apparently much more 'solid' due to the older and firmer ground, and out west it is 'newer' and not as solid. Apparently the firmer ground causes vibrations to transfer easier and travel much further.
bbappel Posted August 24, 2011 #53 Share Posted August 24, 2011 On the 10th floor of a building on the East side of Manhattan. We felt it, but didn't evacuate, just went back to working after some significant disruption in the form of "what was that?" discussions.
CruisinManiac Posted August 24, 2011 #54 Share Posted August 24, 2011 Fun reading about the different experiences. :) I was at my computer desk when I noticed that my desk doors were shaking. I thought the dog - a Jack Russell Terrier - was scratching and thumping on the floor. I turned around to tell her to quit, and couldn't find her in the room. I really didn't think anything more about it until my husband called about 15 minutes later and asked if I had felt the earthquake. The windows at his office were rattling. he thought there was construction going on at first. Back at home, I started investigating the house. Found the dog sound asleep on my Tempurpedic bed. Had she not been on that bed, I feel sure she would have been up and going crazy. A lamp shade had turned cockeyed, the doors on the upstairs entertainment center would wide open, and a few framed wall paintings had shifted (anyone that knows me, knows those things were straight before the earthquake. :D)
dkjretired Posted August 24, 2011 #55 Share Posted August 24, 2011 According to reports on the news, this earthquake was felt in the widest area in the history of the United States.
TWELVEOHONE Posted August 24, 2011 #56 Share Posted August 24, 2011 I had my dog (Golden Retriever) in the office when the earth quake. Interesting is how my dog went crazy for about 3 to 5 minutes prior to the shaking. My neighbor has a dog and she also went crazy right before it hit.
