Get off ship in Nassau or Freeport

Going to the Bahamas in November. This will make my 2nd cruise to the Bahamas.

My first cruise I got off the ship in Nassau but decided to stay on ship when we went to Freeport.

My question is--What is there to do in Freeport? Would I be better off getting off the ship in Nassau and visiting a beach or in Freeport?

This is only my 3rd cruise so I am still learning. I want to stay on the ship one of the port days but I just can't decide.

Thanks!!! :)

In Nassau get off the boat and enjoy the town are area near the port. Decent shopping and people watching can be found here. If you are looking for a decent beach then walk past the British Colonial Hilton and go to Junkanoo Beach. Here you will find a nice little beach to spend a few hours at enjoying the clear Bahamian water. Can also get a good Island drink and some snacks from one of the shaks selling food and drinks. If you want something different than this then get on a water taxi across from the straw market area and head to Atlantis/Paradise Island. You can walk around overe there and see some of the sights for free in the no fee areas and can go to a free beach in Cabbage Beach. Water is a little rough here but is beuatiful as well. Water taxi will run you $3 pp each way.

In Freeport we like to grab a Taxi/Van into Our Lucaya ($5 pp each way). Once there you can get have access to a variety of things from shopping to food to casino and of course Beautiful Beach! There is a free beach access near the Police Station and this will give you the same beach that the hotels are trying to charge for. You won't have access to their facilities but the beach is the same! There is also a place on the beach to rent beach/water related activities from as well as a place to get some food or drink at.

I don't understand why some people arrive in Freeport and look around at the port and not get off the ship. Yes the port area itself is not much to look at but Get Out and away from here and Freeport is like most other ports on a Cruise Iteniary. For that matter most ports of call it is better to get out and away from the pier area. But I guess some people will just not go explore any and then come back on websites like this and say how much they dislike a place.

Heck I could probaly say the same for Belize as we have been there 2 times now and both times did not venture too far from the Tourisim Village area. That being said I don't go to the Belize thread and tell people to stay on the ship. We are going back next month and are going to get off the ship this time and plan on getting a water taxi to see a different place in Belize.

All that being said if you are simply looking for a quiet day onboard the ship. And if that floats your boat then go for it. Afterall a Vacation is what you make of it.

question for those of you who have gotten off in Nassau. We will be arriving there in Jan 2017 for a wedding.

we are taking a 45 min ride to the venue and would like to have a bottle of champagne or something to drink along with us.

my questions is, is there anywhere right in that village area you must walk through to get where the taxis/limos wait to pick you up to buy a bottle?

if not, how does the cruise line feel about bringing a bottle off the ship that we brought with us? Or can you buy a bottle, ask for it not to be opened and bring that off the ship?

Thank you..

also, anyone with info about that village area you have to walk through, please share. I am wondering how long the walk is, if there are things we could buy quickly as we pass through or if it gets pretty crowded, making it hard to make a quick purchase?

You don't need to go away. Mjkacmom was just giving friendly advice since you're new and might not know. :)

I don't know of any liquor stores right at the port but there are some nearby. Since your wedding venue is so far away, you might want to make arrangements with a taxi driver to take you and return to pick you up. I'm sure the driver wouldn't mind stopping at a liquor store too.

Yes I really was trying to be helpful. The best way to get a question answered here is to put the question in the title of the thread, because a lot more people will see it.

Grand Bahama Island is a beautiful place to visit BUT you have to leave the pier and tourist area and explore the rest of the island. We rented a car and drove to Lucayan National Park (not Our Lucayan resort). The beaches were void of tourists and the caverns are really something not to be missed.
