There's a shuttle that will take you the the city centre in Wellington and it's a short walk from there to the cable car. Walking down from the top through the Botanical garden is lovely. The boardwalk leads you to Te Papa..also a very pleasant and picturesque walk.

There's a HoHo busstop to the left near the port gates Auckland..check the website for a tour route. Sorry don't know about the Tamaki village. We used Mt Classics tours for a shorex to Tauranga - Roturua for the thermal attractions and Whakarewara Village.

Hi Roger,

I'm fairly sure the ship tour is the only option...I made enquiries with Tamaki Maori Village a while back when thinking of hiring a car...this was their response...

"We will be operating day time experiences at Tamaki Maori Village for cruise ship passengers this season, however the best thing to do would be to book through the Shore Excursion desk on board the ship – they provide a package with all transport included, and will definitely ensure that you get to and from the ship safe and sound. It will take approximately 1 hour to get from the port of Tauranga to Rotorua, and we do not provide the transport services from Tauranga to Rotorua. We are contracted for our daytime cruise experiences through the Shore Excursion programme, and they also guarantee that you will be returned to the ship in time. If for some reason something were to happen and you were held up, there is a risk that the ship may sail if you are late. "

It seems they are usually only open in the evening for dinner, and contract to open for lunch just for the cruise ship? You can check them out and contact them here www.tamakimaorivillage.co.nz

Regards, Joy

ps...Mum was keen so we've booked the ship tour instead of the hire car :)

I do agree with this.

There are times when the ships tour is the best option.

OK . It may be a bit dearer, but you are only there for one day and for most folk that will be there only chance.

At least with a ships tour it is is timed so that when you arrive at a site, you will be met and guided around.

You dont need a pre booked tour to visit Devonport which is really worth it by the way...turn left from the cruise terminal and you will come to the ferry. When you get to the other side there is a a little tour bus that takes you around and explains the various sites...great way to spend a few hours in pretty little village, nice cafes and shops, good pub.
