mabert Posted October 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 11, 2011 My cruise starts October 25th out of Athens, on the Rotterdam. If the Seafarers union announces a strike, all ferries and ships in Greece will not sail. There is a strike planned for 48 hours beginning October 17th. What happens? I have read that cruise ships may change their itinerary. Yikes. Miriam
sail7seas Posted October 11, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 11, 2011 Prinsendam was in Pireaus yesterday and embarked. I think there were four ships there in pouring rain. Yes it is possible itineraries could change if there is a strike. Stay tuned for any announcements.........

So far I have been asking about taxi strikes, and other public transportation. We have a taxi driver scheduled for several days but he can not take us if there is a strike. I emailed our hotel and today they said right now there is nothing planned on the 24th, 25th or 26th. I heard about a strike on the 19th, but I wasn't sure which union. eh2zed Posted October 12, 2011 #5 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Lots of discussion on the Ports of Call-Europe-Greece board you may want to check out.. I suspect your Roll Call may also be dealing with it.
Pete Jackson Posted October 12, 2011 #6 Share Posted October 12, 2011 So they go on strike because the economy is so bad? Won't that make the economy worse? It's like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer because you have a headache.:p
mabert Posted October 12, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Thank you, I will check it out. I am also following http://livingingreece.gr/strikes/ I wonder if HAL will advise us if there is a problem? Miriam
SabreSailor Posted October 12, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 12, 2011 We are on the Nieuw Amsterdam visiting Piraeus on October 19, the date that the two major Greek unions have called a massive nationwide strike - over half the workers in the country are involved. Yet, as of this morning, HAL agents still insist that the ship will dock - even though during the last strike on October 5, half this size, all cruise ships apparently avoided Piraeus. Why can't HAL make up its mind now and choose an alternate port? It's not as though the strike isn't going to happen!
