disabled parking question

 I personally find this comment very rude and you clearly have not been in public with someone with a visible disability!

People have disabilities for various reasons...and YES people abuse the term in many ways. It bothers me when people slap that place card the window and run into a store quickly!! I have actually called the police on friends who use the place cards because grandma died and it hasn't expired!

My father is a paraplegic due to a work accident 20 years ago. Due to his declining health and now having to use an electric wheelchair..we can NOT fly!!

I give kudos to Carnival for offering a MINOR perk for those with disabilities to enjoy their vacations.

You assume a lot. I have worked with disabled people, and have a disabled family member. And I stand by what I said.

Im glad you can get away. I used to take my sister and not be able to do a lot of excursions, thats why Im going nuts now (she got married so Im by myself).

I knew there would be a time and place when I could do what I wanted.

Now Im learning how to cruise for myself.

Good luck to you. I have to use a scooter. My husband has to help me bath and dress. He works in law enforcement and that is why we have to get away. Some people will have to live the disability to fully understand. Like Patricia, I worked 32 years in nursing homes, but I could emphatize with those people now instead of sympathize.

Hope you are able to sail again soon.

Patricia, I all sorry you feel the way you do. You are defiitely entitiled to your opinion. I also worked with people with disabilities as a therapitst for 32 years. I sympathized with them. I am now living the disability and can empathize with them. I sincerely hope you never have to say you are living with a disability.

I called the 800 listed and the tol exemption is for people that can't stick their arms or legs out the window or door to pay tolls.

Straight from the ports:

Miami:

There is a short form required to be filled out for free handicapped parking including oversized vehicles and RV’s. Please review the following:

There is a short form required to be filled out for free handicapped parking including oversized vehicles and RV’s. Please review the following:

There is no reserved parking at the Port of Miami. The handicapped parking form cannot be downloaded, emailed, faxed, or no longer mailed to passengers. At this time, the forms can only be retrieved at the Toll Booth when entering or exiting our garages or parking lot. Please remember to bring your placard and proof of handicapped exemption with you. If you are from, in or out of state, you will be required to show you’re driver’s license to the Toll Operator, and the exempt individual must be present in the vehicle when you hand in the form.

There is no limit to the amount of days you park as long as you follow these procedures.

“Proof of Exemption.â€

For example, on the Florida Placard the exempt individuals “Florida Driver License number or Florida I.D. number is embedded on the card.†Therefore, when you are at the toll booth, you can prove that the placard does in fact belong to the exempt person because it matches their number and picture. Other States follow along the same guideline or provide a registration card, embed their last 3 digit of the license number, name, last 4 digit of their Social Security number Etc…

It is always in your best interest to arrive one hour earlier “or more†than the Cruise Lines time of allowing you to board the vessel. There is a free shuttle called “International Limo of South Florida†that runs every 20 minutes from the garages/lot to the terminals and vice-versa.

When you return from your Cruise please go to the following website to take our Port of Miami Customer Service Survey: http://www.miamidade.gov/portofmiami...er_service.asp. We would very much appreciate your input on your visit to the Port of Miami.

The Port of Miami prides itself on our customer service and its visitor's safety. If I can help you any further please feel free to contact me at POMservice@miamidade.gov.

Fort Lauderdale:

Disabled Parking

In 1996 the Broward County Board of Commissioners, acting under authority of Florida Statute 316.1959, elected to charge disabled patrons of the Port Everglades parking facilities the same fees as are applied to all other patrons; and that pursuant to Section 3 of Statute 316.1964, "When a state, county, or municipal parking facility or lot is being used in connection with an event at a convention center, cruise-port terminal, sports stadium, coliseum, or auditorium, the parking facility may charge a person whose vehicle displays such a permit a parking fee in the same manner and amount as it charges other persons."

However, pursuant to Section 8 of the latter statute, any vehicle with specialized equipment such as ramps, lifts, or foot or hand controls, for use by the person who has a disability, or any vehicle that is displaying the Florida Turnpike Toll Exemption sticker, is exempt from any parking fees in Port Everglades.

Here is how to request free parking at Port Everglades:

At the entry of the Port Everglades parking garage, pull a parking ticket from the automated machine and get the attention of one of the parking agents in an adjacent exit booth. Advise that parking agent that you would like a disability waiver of parking. The parking agent will telephone for a parking supervisor who will come to the booth and examine your vehicle to determine if the driver/vehicle meets the criteria for a parking waiver. The parking supervisor will inspect the vehicle to determine if a Florida Turnpike Toll Exemption sticker is affixed to it and/or if the vehicle has specialized equipment and a hanging tag from the Division of Motor Vehicles verifying the equipment.

When the parking supervisor verifies that a disability waiver of parking is allowable, the driver's name and address and the registration number on the sticker or hanging tag will be recorded on the parking ticket by that parking supervisor and the parking supervisor will sign the ticket. At this point the driver will be given the parking ticket and directed to enter the garage.

Upon exit, the parking ticket with the recorded information and the parking supervisor’s signature will be surrendered to the exit parking attendant and no parking fees will be charged.

Visit http://www.dot.state.fl.us/ctd/tollpermit/tollpermitprogram.htm for information about the Florida Disabled Toll Permit Program and to obtain Florida Turnpike Toll Exemption sticker.

Port Canaveral:

Special parking spaces are provided. The parking fee is waived for vehicles that:

1. Have special equipment such as ramps, lifts, foot or hand controls; or

2. Display the Florida Toll Exemption permit. (Call 800-983-2435 ext. 2 to apply for an exemption form.)

Tampa:

Charges and cites a section of Florida State Statutes regarding that right:

Title XXIII

MOTOR VEHICLES Chapter 316

STATE UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL

316.1964 Exemption of vehicles transporting certain persons who have disabilities from payment of parking fees and penalties.--

(8) Notwithstanding subsection (1), a county, municipality, or any agency thereof may charge for parking in a facility or lot that provides timed parking spaces any vehicle that displays a disabled parking permit, except that any vehicle with specialized equipment, such as ramps, lifts, or foot or hand controls, for use by a person who has a disability, or any vehicle that is displaying the Florida Toll Exemption permit, is exempt from any parking fees.

Jaxksonville:

Handicap parking

JAXPORT provides designated handicapped parking spaces. Parking is $15 per day per passenger vehicle, and $25 per day for oversized recreational vehicles. Exception to parking fee: Florida Statute allows cruise terminals to charge for handicapped parking, "except any vehicle with specialized equipment, such as ramps, lifts, or foot or hand controls, for use by a person who has a disability, or any vehicle that is displaying the Florida Toll Exemption permit, is exempt from parking fees". (Per Florida Statute 316.1964)

JAXPORT will provide special assistance to our disabled guests from the parking lot to the terminal. Please advise the guard upon entering the port that you will need assistance.

In Sum, it is up to the facility if it charges or exempts handicap placards. Only exceptions are special equiped vehicles or display of Florida Toll Exemption Permit. Only Miami allows "free handicap parking" and for that the handicap person must be in the vehicle and you have to fill out a form at the toll gate.

I have no clue why everyone is posting about Florida Ports when the OP is sailing out of Charleston, SC.

Florida has so many ships sailing from it, we just got carried away. The OP said Fantasy in the sail square, but the original question stated nothing about a specific port, sorry.

That being said, the thread has taken a turn to being disabled and using scooters etc. I am not disabled and don't envy anyone who is. I too am in the healthcare industry, so I've seen.

The subject is parking cost :) and how to obtain free parking, NOT that one can't walk or need help with ADL's

Just found out that my husbands Aunt may be riding with us to the cruise terminal. She has a handicapped parking hanger, and i heard that parking would be free? but she doesnt have the same last name as either my husband or I ? and shes not driving- didnt know if that mattered or did not? And does she need anything other than the blue hanger?

I am assuming you are sailing out of Charleston. I may be wrong, but I am going by your next cruise you have posted. Charleston DOES NOT charge for handicapped parking. As you are going through what I call a maze, you will first drop off your checked luggage, then you will be stopped and asked to show your travel documents, then next is the parking attendants who collect $15 per day. However, if you have either a handicapped licensed plate or placard, you will be given a special card to hang on your rearview mirror. You are then directed into a warehouse. The handicapped parking is seperate from the other parking. A shuttle meets you there and carries you to the terminal. Also, in the terminal, there is an elevator for the handicapped. The walk into the ship is rather long and steep. Hope this helps and happy sailing.

Select shuttles from the parking warehouse have a handicap lift if needed.

this really bothers me that someone is so offended that my aunt could park for free. since i am driving, it really dont matter the cost, but if my aunt were alone it certainly would matter. she is on a fixed income, requires assistance, and i think that she certainly does deserve to park for free. as a matter of fact, im not sure i understand the parking fees anyway... why dont they just add it into the cost of the cruise?

i am the type that i NEVER mind when disabled persons are treated with special perks. my god, i have the use of both legs and arms and i can earn a decent living, but many can not. am shocked that people are so selfish.

ill bet your the type who says 'its not fair.' and 'why does she get to do it and i dont?'

geez!!!!!

Who said I was offended? I am simply curious as to why.

To me I would find it frustrating. Disabled people have had to fight for equal rights, and then receive unnecessary special perks because of their disability. I find it kind of contradictory. Like when women use the whole "we want equal rights only when it benefits us." I find it kind of funny people use "fixed income" as an excuse. Do the elderly also get free parking? They are often on a fixed income as well.

Sorry if my curiosity offends you. I assure you I am not some disabled hating selfish money grabbing harpy.

(and no, even when taking my disabled grandmother places I don't use the handicap parking. I drop her off at the front and find regular parking even though I have her tag)

I kinda have to agree. So many with stickers and plates. Sit and watch at Walmart how some hop out of a car. Yes, many disabilities are internal. I have a nephew declared handicapped, on disability, yet it's from lifestyle vs. actual physical problems.

My husband has a fake leg. and is young and active. He has his days where the stump hurts and will on occasion use the handicap card. He get looks because he does not look handicap. What bother me on handicap is the plackards for baby's, infants and toddlers. At that age they do not walk so why do there parents have a card and use it. I mean is it really harder to take a disabled baby out of a car . It only helps the parents be lazy.

I agree with the person who said people fight for equal rights yet still want some stuff free. And no I am not bitter because we can take advantage of that and realize it is not fair. I am all for using the parking close to the terminal but also believe there is more abuse that there is need. Especially on the free parking.

In MA parking is free. But you also can not tow or ticket a car with handicap plates or placards. So If a person is in 2 hour parking and parks for 10 they do not get a ticket. And why can't people pay for parking like the rest of us. My husband pays for his. I pay for mine.

And we spend at least 4 grand a year on liners and then add the copay on the leg we buy every 5 years ( another 5k) and this is for life. He was born this way. We do not argue on paying.

And we pay at the airport too and that is super expensive. SO why are people offended that others think people who have disabilities should pay to use the parking service. I agree that they should have closer spots but I have never understood the free thing.

Not true, my parents are disabled and they have the hangtag too and still had to pay when we parked at Miami port.

I called yesterday and Anna at phone # 305-347-5515 told me it was free. So do i consider her not telling the truth or believe what you say? Did your parents inquire about it? Did they call the port ahead of time or why were they charged? Give a little more info please.
