Rare Lois R Posted November 24, 2011 #26 Share Posted November 24, 2011 Nope - no stairs and no train for me. With one bad knee and 3 suitcases and 2 carryons between the two of us - I will gladly pay for a private ride to the port from our hotel/apt in Rome. I am, after all, on vacation :D That "temporary" building has been there for years...... Hi, I have been trying to follow a bit of your postings about your recent trip:D as I will be going to the Med for the first time in May:)...10 nights on Equinox. I sail solo and for this trip? I am using a car service. I am staying at the Hotel Golden Pre-cruise and they have a company they use...40 Euros to get me from the airport to the hotel. Using a service to get to the ship the next day as well. I know it is quite a bit more money but to be honest, I am putting some extra $ away for "transportation":). tom_uk Posted November 24, 2011 #27 Share Posted November 24, 2011 Cruisemom42's post had a lot of really good points, and was based on practical experience. One thing I might do differently, however, is catch the train at Termini. This is purely because it might be easier to find somewhere to put the luggage if you board there; it is possible that by the time it gets to Trastavere all the luggage spaces will be full. Our most recent trip (our 3rd) was on Equinox. We really love the Solstice class ships......so airy and refined. Had a bunch of friends stay at Hotel Golden. We have taken both taxis and private companies for getting from airport to hotel in Rome. Cost about the same but private ride nicer. But for getting from hotel to port......its a private ride for sure :D Now, we are know to use public transport in some ports....... tram in Istabul, metro in Athens etc........ but not when "lugging" luggage. ;) Have fun planning and a wonderful trip ! Yes, I worried about that a bit. However, I was traveling in the off-season and at a time (around 2pm) that was earlier than most commuters or cruise ship visitors would be leaving Rome. It worked out fine for me -- I was just trying to avoid the longish walk in Termini to the platform. ;)
tobes Posted November 29, 2011 #31 Share Posted November 29, 2011 It must be incredibly difficult for a hotel to make recommendations ... I suspect that many go for what they perceive as "safe" options - nothing too unique, or too expensive, or too anything. I just spent five nights at the Senato and it was wonderful. I have never experienced a better staff anywhere. And I absolutely walked everywhere from there. I was also lucky enough to get a room on the third floor with a view of the pantheon and the square, what a treat!:)
