Tazzycat Posted December 4, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2011 We are very interested in going to a luau on the big island, Oahu or Maui, but they seem to push alot of alcohol and I fear spending the latter part of the evening with a bunch of loud and rowdy drunk people. Can you recommend a luau that is not geared toward the drinkers?
Astro Flyer Posted December 4, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 4, 2011 We are very interested in going to a luau on the big island, Oahu or Maui, but they seem to push alot of alcohol and I fear spending the latter part of the evening with a bunch of loud and rowdy drunk people. Can you recommend a luau that is not geared toward the drinkers? I don't know which ship you're sailing so don't know how much time you have in each port. I've never experienced a bunch of loud and rowdy drunk people in any of my luaus even with unlimited free drinks. If you have enough time on Maui, the top rated luau in Hawaii is the Old Lahaina Luau in Lahaina. If you tender into Lahaina for the day you probably won't be there long enough; if you're spending 2 days in Kahului it's a 45 minute drive to the OLL. It's very popular so generally reservations are necessary & with reserved seating you're escorted to your table. Seating is either at regular tables further away from the stage or seated on mats & short tables closer. You get a good view from either type of seating which is a semicircle around the stage & I use the regular table & chairs. The meal is buffet but is controlled by table so lines were no problem. The show is strictly Hawaiian so there won't be entertainment from other Polynesian cultures which is something that sets the OLL apart from other luaus. I've never been disappointed & would go there again because it's much better than the larger luaus. http://www.oldlahainaluau.com/
Pokeraddict Posted December 4, 2011 #3 Share Posted December 4, 2011 Been to two Luau's and have never experienced rowdiness or drunkenness. I think the show's are taken somewhat serious in that people respect the culture and education of the experience.
chipmaster Posted December 4, 2011 #4 Share Posted December 4, 2011 Been to Hawaii too many times and we always end up dong a Luau, the only time I saw people acting wild/sick was at the Paradise Cove. Took the bus from waikiki. During the show and activities no issue but plenty of sick young "adults" on the bus.. I have to admit it was spring break week. Since that time been to 4 or 5 and never seen anybody get sick or wild.. just people enjoy themselves... nothing like the sick drunks hang out of buses a few decades ago at Paradise cove
Bucky3 Posted December 4, 2011 #5 Share Posted December 4, 2011 The Polynesian Cultural Center on Oahu does not serve alcohol of any kind at all, and they have an amazing show. You may need to take the ship's excursion there to assure your return by sailing time.
cb at sea Posted December 5, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 5, 2011 A luau is a PARTY! Sure, there will be some alcohol involved, but we've never seen a bunch of drunken, rowdy folks! Just people having fun and enjoying the party! The food is ok (poi is an "acquired taste"...nasty!)...the entertainment is stellar....you're there for a good time. That's all! No need to partake of alcohol, if you don't want to!
SandosSandles Posted December 5, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 5, 2011 We went to a great luau in Maui. Alcohol was not part of the luau. Im not sure what ship you are on, but we were on Pride of America and we went to this luau on our Sunday night in port in Maui. Our whole family loved it. We were given un upgrade of front row seats at no charge, the food was great and the show fun. In my oppinion, this is a great family luau, not to mention, both of our kids were free of charge which was fantastic. We took a taxi from the port, i think it was around 15 minutes. We booked online with http://hawaiicruiseexcursions.com/MauiLuau.htm From what you are describing, i think you would really enjoy this luau. We had a great time and it definitely was not a party luau.
hvsteve1 Posted December 6, 2011 #8 Share Posted December 6, 2011 I believe the Polynesian Culteral Center is part of the Morman Church. Thus, there probably is no alcohol.

It's a booking agency only based in the Cayman Islands. Could you provide more specifics on this luau because based on the link you provided, I have more questions than answers. Spending a lot of time in Maui, I'd like to know more about this luau particularly who does it & where it's located. A Cayman Islands booking company for an unknown luau in Maui leaves too many questions for me to consider it.

They are non-drinkers and this would be perfect. Do they offer a reduced rate for the adults who are not drinking?
