cruisecluestoo Posted December 13, 2011 #1 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Going to a private island has always been one of our favorite days . I was just talking to some one who was just at Labadee and said it was very commercial . I hope not . The best part of going to a private island is it seems like a private island . Who else has been there lately? Diane cruiseclues
cb at sea Posted December 13, 2011 #2 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Since they built the dock, they've also built up other structures, but you can still have a nice beach day there.....just not as "primitive" as it once was!

There is a local vendor area that I have not been to as it was not near anything I did. By the way, Labadee is not an island but a peninsula on the island of Hispaniola and is in the country of Haiti. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispaniola

will773 Posted December 13, 2011 #6 Share Posted December 13, 2011 I don't think it's commercial at all! It's very remote and you definitely get the private island feel!
Jtd724 Posted December 13, 2011 #7 Share Posted December 13, 2011 I don't think it's commercial at all! It's very remote and you definitely get the private island feel! you need to try Malfini. Its as if you were brought to Giligans Island. It's paradise.Truly. Only 20-30 people max. It's so much different then Labadee.

sunshn1972 Posted December 13, 2011 #9 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Labadee is my absolute favorite stop in the Caribbean. I find it picturesque. :)
negc Posted December 13, 2011 #10 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Perhaps some people have such a broad definition of "commercial" that Labadee would qualify, but for most of us, the construction of the dock, the addition of cabanas and the zip line and coaster hardly make it a commercial spot. Still a great place to relax and enjoy the sun, sand and water and in my opinion, the changes are "improvements" and don't detract from the beach experience in the slightest :). DarthGrady Posted December 13, 2011 #11 Share Posted December 13, 2011 Thus far I have been to three private islands: Half Moon Cay, Coco Cay and Labadee. I would say that Labadee felt the most commercialized of those three. That being said, it was still far less commercialized than any regular port. I thoroughly enjoyed Labadee, it just felt a bit different than CC or HMC. The reasons why: -First and foremost it's not actually an island. Its a peninsula on the coast of Haiti. Locals are able to come on to the property and run a market which is much bigger than the shopping areas on the other islands. -The new dock means no tenders. I think you lose that "island feeling" when you don't take a boat over. It definitely cuts down on wait times for going ashore though. -The coaster and zip lines make it feel more theme park-ish. - There seemed to be more buildings on Labadee than the other ones, which added to the different atmosphere. Exactly why I am so opposed to building docks on these islands. They just need to leave paradise alone.
Silvery Seas Cruiser Posted December 28, 2011 #13 Share Posted December 28, 2011 The dock does make it much easier for folks in wheel chairs and others needing special assistance.
