It now looks like the Micoperi is possibly sailing away.

There seems to be a lot of talk about the future of the salvage on Giglio news although its difficult tonderstand the translation I get on my laptop. Does anyone get a clear translation or do we all get the same one.

Microperi 30 platform is not in camera view as of 1:36 EST US time.

Clive and Anne: Where are you seeing the discussion on the salvage in Giglio News, I couldn't find any new articles?

Hi Ken

On the "I opposed the Titan Micoperi project, amonst other things of late is this article http://www.ogginotizie.it/168627-costa-concordia-nuova-micoperi-e-progetto-recupero-qualcosa-non-quadra/#.UFAmAVSlfgV

Best Wishes

Clive

Thanks Clive. The best I could understand the translation of that article it mainly revolves around the financial stability of the Micoperi company. Not much substance regarding the salvage operation itself.

CT, this sums it up...

"The panel of experts ruled that there was "an almost complete omission of the entire sequence of (emergency) messages that should have been expected".

Passengers were left unaware of the gravity of the situation and were not told to put on their life jackets, the report said."

Correct -- that's what the report points out. It also stresses that too much time was wasted before the emergency signal was sounded.

On another note, the former chaplain of the Concordia, Gianluca Depretto is being investigated for the theft of over a dozen paintings of 16th and 17th century Flemish painters. He was caught trying to pawn them for about 90,000 euros each.

A reckless captain and a thief for a priest doesn't bode too well for Carnival Corp. Hopefully Costa has revisited their seriously flawed employee screening process and made necessary changes -- across the board -- albeit too late for the onslaught of lawsuits.

Former CEO of Costa, Pier Luigi Foschi now on "special assignment" in Asia. The Asian fleet consists of 3 ships.. ...funny how the press releases disguise the "demotion".

Currently, Carnival Corp.'s Asia operations include two Costa ships based in China and Singapore and a Princess ship scheduled to launch a series of voyages from Japan next spring.

"Pier is the ideal candidate for this new role and considering that his responsibilities at Costa are winding down, we are delighted that he agreed to oversee our growth strategies in this emerging cruise region," he added.

Not so sure Foschi would want the man who cost him his job following him to the other end of the world. Foschi does have Asian experience as VP of Otis Elevator. Maybe he'll be able to provide some insight to the families of the dead who were trapped in the Costa Concordia elevators.

his (Foshi's) experience as executive vice president of Pacific Asia operations for the Otis Elevator Company

P.S. If you've read the testimony transcripts and summaries, there are few surprises. However, the court had a big job of sorting this all out. Black box certainly helped, and it is good to now have the VDR timeline to match what was said by whom and when to go along with the sworn statements - most of which were provided in the early hours and days just after the wreck when recollecting times was lost in the fog of chaos. Also, report does not let Costa Crociere off the hook, stating that with the info they'd received, they should have urged the emergency evac prodedures.

On another note, Italy's Panorama website (which may be more of a tabloid(?) not sure -- still, even tabloids get the story right occasionally) is reporting on info leaked to them that the Tribunale of Grosseto has apparently overlooked. Allegedly, two RINA engineers were on the premises of Costa Crociere when the emergency was in full swing. (Costa Crociere's Foschi testified a few months back that Concordia underwent two inspections by RINA, one in November 2011 and another in December 2011 - the last being optional and voluntary and at the request of Costa Crociere... "During this visit, the necessity was to ensure that these systems are properly implemented, and the ship was once again subject to checks of emergency operations by RINA five inspectors -- three, who observed and two who were mixed among clientele during the evacuation of the ship. The Commander was the same - Schettino - as well as the crew. Unfortunately, after one month, the tragedy happened.") Panorama asks why RINA employees were at Costa Crociere DURING the emergency, when RINA itself, an org that inspects shipping companies to ensure proper procedures and protocols are in place and carried out, validates safety certifications, etc., stated they are typically called in AFTER a main emergency event has passed. Perhaps desperate times called for their immediate attention. Much ado about nothing? It certainly raises questions, though.

This all continues back to our discussions about the overall operations polices of Carnival INC. not just Costa Line! Seems Carnival that hole they are in, is getting deeper.

I am not familiar with the *RINA*..........????

Usually the local national Coast Guard does these types of inspections, but that does not mean there cannot be other agincies?

Looks like the Micoperi Group is having money problems. The article mentions starting the procedure for the third-party search underwriters. They may have had to pull back the six sections of the company.

Yes, the harbour/port authority did the inspection (along with RINA) in November to verify the documentation submitted by Costa Crociere related to its safeety/security measures. The second pass in December was a further check by RINA - again, voluntary and optional, related to additional certifications. From Wiki: "Gianni Scerni, the chairman of Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), the classification society that issued Costa Concordia a certificate of seaworthiness and safety management in November 2011, resigned on 18 January 2012."
