Should we bring our own snorkeling gear on the 14 day Marquessas, etc cruise?

Does it make sense to bring our own gear for a PG cruise? Does ATN free allowance include an extra bag with snorkeling gear and one skin suit? We are on the 18 Aug 2012 departure.

The PG will give you snorkelling gear but no wet suit.

Some people are more comfortable with their own and bring it.

 

See the ATN website - someone once told me that diving gear is in addition to the allowance.

we brought our own mask & snorkle ..they were better quality than pG,s...but their fins were fine.

As others have said, we always travel with our own masks and snorkels (good fit is so important), but used the ships fins.

 

ATN does allow extra weight for dive gear, but you have to show proof that you are a certified diver - snorkel equipment is not considered dive gear.

Hmm..this thread has me wondering. Do you really need a wet suit to snorkel in FP? I thought the water was really warm there.

No, you don't, although some like to wear a rash guard. The PG's masks are pretty good, although I have my own--a mask and snorkel take very little room.

I wore a rash guard for snorkelling but I was never cold (it was just to protect my back from the sun), and I spent literally hours at a time in the water while we were there. Hubs wore a 3mm shorty while diving, but he said he didn't really need it either - dive guide didn't wear one.

I thought I had read that PG also offers a flotation vest or something similar that provides a little extra buoyancy. Is that true?

PG does offer a flotation vest.

 

We have a collection of rash guard tops that we wear in FP. I was once burnt very badly so never take the chance now. I use them both in and out of the water. They are quick drying so no problem there.

 

The PG website also offers them quite reasonably.

 

One can also get a spray for you to spray your T shirts and give them some UV protection as well.
