Wine-O Posted March 6, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 6, 2012 We will be taking our 1st cruise on the Summit to Bermuda in May. We will be docking at Kings Wharf. Do all ships dock port side? No, they can dock on either side of the ship. When we were there a couple of years ago I asked this question of the ship's Captain. He said it all depended upon what maintenance they needed to do on the ship. We were docking starboard side because he needed to do maintenance on the ship's davits and small craft on the boats on the port side.
CathyCruises Posted March 6, 2012 #3 Share Posted March 6, 2012 There's a lot of confusion about this. The port side of the ship does NOT necessarily have anything to do with the position of the ship 'in port'. In any given port on any given day, any ship can dock with its port side facing the water, or facing the port. Really no correlation at all in modern usage. Wine-O Posted March 6, 2012 #4 Share Posted March 6, 2012 It does appear when docked in Bayonne, the ship is docked on it's starboard side, bow out. When you get on board, head up forward and have lunch at the Aqua Spa Cafe and grab a table on the Port side. You will have a great view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty and a nice leisurely lunch without all the crowds.

jsf Posted March 6, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 6, 2012 Everyones correct on this, ions ago ships always docked on the left side thus it was called the port side. If trying to remember which is which( right) side has more letters (starboard) (left) side is (port). Just for the heck of it channel markers are red on right when returning from sea...green on left. Lots of old nautical sayings. John
Lsimon Posted March 6, 2012 #8 Share Posted March 6, 2012 All these sailor wantabees. How about left, right, front and back? The problem with left and right is that left when you're facing the pointy end is the same are right when you're facing the blunt end. I could never remember which was port and which was starboard until someone told me that port is on the left when you're facing forward and that you just need to remember that port and left have the same number of letters. A memory trick: for channel markers red, right, return (all begin with r) and green go out . Another trick: on vessels the red lights are on the left or port side and red is the color of port wine. Starboard is the right side and green. Red is port and left. Green is starboard and right. That is if you are facing forward or the bow. When you bow you bow forward not backward. Confused?
