Pet Peeves

Marilyn might have worn a 14 in the sizing of her day, but I bet it would be more like an 8 in today's deflated vanity sizing. No, she was not a waif, but she was not all that big either. She had a very womanly, curvy, but certainly not heavy, body.

For example, as a 105 pound teenager I wore a size 9/10 back around 1960. As a much heavier (135ish) 66 year old, gosh, I wear a size 8--sometimes even a six. Uh, yeah. Sizes (the numbers on the tags) are smaller, that's all. A size 8 nowdays is unfortunately probably about the same as a 12 then.

And did you see Biggest Loser tonight? It was make-over night, and everyone looked fabulous. They said that Kim, who weighs around 170, was wearing a size 6. She looked wonderful, but that size six is not the size six of years ago. It's hard, but we need to (try) to ignore those darn sizes and wear what fits!

This from a woman (me!) who refuses to buy jeans over a size 8--and yes, I know I'm fooling myself.

So don't feel bad with the wedding dress--I have heard before that their sizing is much different from what we are used to. But, having to go to a size 20 is ridiculous. It's not you, it's the industry. You'd think that brides of all people would need vanity sizing.

Vanity sizing drives me nuts! I wear a 0/2 today. I have size 6 pants from ten years ago. When I put them up to the current 0s from the same designer the 6s are bigger! I'm starting to get sized out of things...in some cases XXS is too big! I really wish companies would stop vanity sizing.

I tried on 9 wedding dresses from sizes anywhere from a 10, 12, all the way up to that Chinese 20 and the Chinese 20 is the dress I ended up liking the most! So if a woman is a true size 20, then I feel really bad for her. I looked at that section of wedding dresses for the fun of it to see if there was something that could be taken in a few sizes and those dresses seemed to be more true to their sizes, although many more yards of fabric!

When I go shopping in Hong Kong, the clothes have two sizes...a US size and a Chinese size. The US size is always at least two sizes smaller. I'm always afraid my luggage isn't going to make it when I travel, but especially when I go to Hong Kong or China...I have a 23" waist and 33" hips, but I do have full thighs, and I don't know where the heck I would find pants should my luggage not make it. That said, fast food joints are popping up left and right in China. I'm seeing more and more bodies that resemble the average American when I go overseas, especially the children.

Oh no!! After many years, I just bought my first pair of size 10 (down from 12) jeans last weekend, and I was really excited! Are you all saying that the "new" sizing is just so you can buy a smaller size, but it's actually the same size? A 10 is actually a 12??

Later girls - gotta get back on the treadmill to see if I can make it to an 8

I hate to say it, but depending on the brand, it's possible. But then, the vanity sizing has been going on for quite a few years, so probably your 12's were really 14's.

If you've lost weight/inches though, then yes, you are in a 'smaller' size.

If we could just learn to ignore those numbers on the tag and wear what fits we'd be better off.

After all, we are the size we are, no matter what the tag says. Just because the tag says '8' instead of '10' doesn't change the actual size of my body. (Except mentally)

I agree with so many comments here, lol. Another thing I don't like to see is a woman all dressed up and you can see tattoos on her. To me it looks cheap takes away from the elegant look they think they have, I know others think differently and think of tattoos as art, but I don't.

I agree with you on that..I don't like tattoos and could care less if anyone has one, but you know, they sorta forfeit their right to complain if people keep looking at them..if their tats are so noticable..don't they expect people to look? I was running in a race this morning and there was a girl with chunky legs that had a woman tattooed on both of her back hamstrings..good for her, but the cellulite didn't contribute to the look she was probably going for when she had the tats done.

I hate ribbed tank tops on guys (my husband wears them as undershirts, and I just hate them!)

People who wear black with brown....

When women wear clothes way to small for them..it's not attractive...wear something that complements your shape, both color and fitting wise!

Sizes are DRAMATICALLY different than they were in Marilyn's day, and also in the 70s.

I have a dress (labelled size 12) that my mom bought in about 1950. The last time it fit me was 5 years ago when I was an 8-10 in today's sizes. So that was about Marilyn's size ... she'd be an 8 or so today.

My grad dress from high school (1979) is marked as a size 7, which now would fit a size 2/3. And I thought I was FAT in those days!

Water Baby - your post made me LOL because in 1970 I was a size 8 and now I am a size 6, but I was a lot thinner in 1970 when I was a size 8 :)

Not really clothing but I one of my biggest pet peeves....People that shuffle their feet!! Also, can't stand the sound of "flip flops" that actually go "flip flop"!:D Momma always said, stand up straight and don't drag your feet!:)

I finally broke down and bought one of the cotton maxi sundresses this past week. Really very cute, not something I ever thought I would wear but it was perfect yesterday. We had to be at the beach at 4:30 am as Drew was playing for a Sunrise service. It was perfect for the beach with some sandals and a cotton shrug to keep the wind off. I may just have to buy a couple more.;)

The worst site I think I have ever seen...this past week when I was shopping for the maxi-dress....a girl in front of me with Christmas flannel pj bottoms, a short tight tank top and she was ready to "deliver" any day! I know I am old and old school but to the young women, this is not the least bit attractive when so far along in a pregnancy!:(

Weight Watchers just posted an article on Facebook about vanity sizing. They said the only things that have stayed true to size are sewing patterns. They said a size 8 in a McCall's pattern is 32-23.5-33.5, but these measurements would be a 0 or 00 at Ann Taylor or Banana Republic. Sure enough, these are very close to my measurements, and I wear a 0 or 2 from most stores. Of course, it used to be that sizes below an 8 didn't exist.

I have tattoos that can be seen, forearms, back, and legs, and I enjoy dressing up for elegant night and I don't think it makes me look cheap. I love my tattoos and do not regret any of the 16 that I have.

It seems there is vanity sizing in bras too - cup sizes are inflated so everyone now wears a larger cup size. I wore the same size bra for many years - a 34C. Now I have to get a 34D for the same "girls". My old 34C bras still fit. No one wears an A cup anymore - a B cup is tiny.

(Re dress sizes: I remember whn 3 was the smallest size available - now theres 1, 0, and even 00)

I haven't sewed in a while, but I remember that when I was wearing a 6 in ready-made, I used a size 10 pattern and it fit without adjustments.

1. Skirts that are so short you get a glimpse of thong underwear, or worse, a hoo-ha

2. Team logo wear all worn at once, hat, jersey, shorts and shoes. Less is definitely more

3. Cheap perfume overload, or as bad, expensive perfume overload. ("Look at me, I can afford expensive perfume and use 1/3 of the bottle each time!") As I told my son's as they reached the age to wear cologne, "Wear just enough to make people way, "Hmmmm, where is that coming from?", instead of "EWWWWW, where is THAT COMING FROM!!!!!"

4. Hats in the dining room, baseball caps reversed (anytime) and baseball caps with the bill worn sideways and flat

5. Female vastly overdressed than her escort on any night.

6. Speedos on overweight men (and very few other men)

7. Multi braided hairstyles (usually occurs while in the Carribbean) Not really cute on anyone, much less 25+ age group

8. Necklines plunging to the navel (men or women). But in formal wear, remember, you're on a cruise vacation, not the Academy Awards Red Carpet. It strains my husband's eyesight...please be considerate.

9. Gentlemen, please remember, owning a pair of khakis is not a bad thing. Try wearing those instead of cargo shorts for dinner.

10. Wearing sunglasses at the dinner table.

Probably a couple more, but I don't want to come across as difficult to get along with

Wow, as a first-time cruiser and someone who enjoys clothes, this thread is a real eye-opener.

Re: white shoes -- I was planning to wear some strappy white low-heeled sandals -- they are labeled as "fashion sandals" in the store ads and I don't think they look too old-ladyish. Will this be a fashion no-no?

Also, do women still wear long "maxi" dresses on cruises? I'm not talking a dressy gown for formal night, I'm talking a cotton, floral spagetti-strap dress. I'm not necesarily planning on taking it, but I do own one.

I know that a lot of people look down on denim jean shorts these days, too. "Jorts" are considered lower class and tacky. But to me, they make the best sense on a Caribbean hike through the jungles. With a cute T-shirt (oh-no, am I commiting another fashion foible?) White or khaki shorts would get dirty, and no sense getting a nice top all sweaty. Thoughts?

On the subject of excursions, especially those including hiking or climbing, do most people wear the trendy Sperry topsiders, or do they wear regular athletic shoes?

Oh, and my husband wants to know -- for men, are mostly white athletic shoes a no-no with khaki shorts? He maintains that only brown casual shoes (sandals or topsiders) are OK with khaki shorts.

We are cruising on Norwegian -- free style cruising affords us the freedom of not having to dress up too much at night. I am going with day dresses and skirts for the most part in the PM. I am having fun selecting my cruise clothes so far,...just don't want to go too far off the mark.

White shoes are fine, and usually go with so many things that they save space in packing.

Maxi-dress would be a wonderful swimsuit cover-up or daytime lounge dress.

You know, I think jeans shorts would have been a better choice for my husband when he went on an excursion than the khaki shorts he wore that got badly stained.

Hiking, you might want hiking shorts. Just walking around, topsiders or tennis shoes (whatever is most comfortable) is what you should choose to take.

On our trip to the Carribbean I took one black skirt and used four/five different tops. Two dressy, beaded tops for formal night (with black stockings and heels) and lesser dressy tops with nude colored stockings and lower heels. Just whatever you would normally wear to a nice restaurant in the town you live in. My husband, on "smart casual" nights would wear a collarless black linen shirt and dress slacks or something like that. Formal night, he work a dark charcoal suit with shirt and colored tie and dress shoes. But he likes to dress up. Next cruise we will probably reserve a tuxedo and that will lighten up our suitcases.

Remember, the cruise is for you to relax, enjoy and develop wonderful memories. You will most likely find that it's a lot easier than you are now expecting it to be.

#2 Leggings are not pants. Leggings are not pants. Leggings are NOT pants! If you are going to wear leggings, please wear a shirt long enough to cover your hindquarters! Please!

Oh thank GOD some one hit on it! My biggest pet peeve is this! I don't care how young or skinny you think you are I do not wnat to know how many creases are on you lower half! They are not attractive and when I was young they were underware! They look fine under a tunic or a shorter dress but for no reason other than some one broke in and stole every other shread of your clothing should they ever be worn as pants! (unless your under the age of 5) . I work with young woman and a few older ones that think they are appropriate wear for work...in a school ?? Hello???

Amen sister!!! leggings and spandex or for dance class. In the 80's I knew how to rock the look. Over sized shirt with heels, I was a total metal chick back then. Well now for me leggings are for dance class only.
