How to make a BEELINE from Canada Place to YVR

Recommended Posts

Reposting here upon the suggestion of someone over on the Alaska board...

My partner and I are on the 6/1 Radiance sailing that docks at Canada Place at 7AM on 6/8. We fly out of YVR later that day at 12:45PM.

We've just been informed that our flight's departure time was involuntarily changed to 11:30A.

The airline is graciously allowing us to reschedule and without penalty. However, given the limited number of available flights, there isn't anything that would allow us to leave later AND be home the same evening. (We have an unexpected family commitment the following day.)

We also can't move to another airline since the tickets we have are free ones courtesy of a boatload of frequent flier miles. Purchasing new tickets altogether would cost us $3000 - something we can't do.

So, we've decided to stick with the new 1130A departure time - and carefully strategize the insanely mad dash we'll need to make to get from the port to the airport.

Can anyone share their recent experiences or offer advice and/or tips?

Thanks!

My advice is to pack light and use the self-disembarkation option (assuming it is offered in Vancouver). You have to carry your bags off the ship yourself (thus the pack light comment) bu you will be the first off the ship, perhaps as early as 7:30am. Then hike about 2-3 short blocks over to the skytrain (or whatever they call it - check the board for more info) and take it to the airport (should take you about 30 minutes). Taking a taxi is alot more expensive and normally does not get you there any faster (again you can esearch this out on the board).

Yes Canada Place has self disembarkation but 11:30 is still cutting it close. They need to be at YVR by 9:30 to clear customs & security.

You will have no trouble with a 1130 departure from YVR so long as you can self-disembark which requires you being able to handle all of your own luggage. With that you should have no trouble being able to clear Canadian customs and be on the curb at Canada Place by 0830. At that point you have 3 options to get out to YVR:

  • you can take a cab which will cost about $35
  • you can schlep you luggage 3 blocks over to Waterfront Station and take the Canada Line out to YVR station, the cost $3.75 pp.
  • grab a limo which will cost you $52 plus 12% tax and a tip.

Each of the above will take 35 mins so you should have no trouble being at YVR about 0900 in lots of time for your 1130 flight. Relax and enjoy.:)

Just a note of caution - while PD is correct that it's every 6 or 7 to the airport the trains are actually every three minutes so make sure your is going to the Airport as the others go into Richmond center.

Cheers

If there is more than one ship disembarking at Canada Place, you will be better off taking Canada Line out to the airport. We had to wait over an hour for a taxi when we last took an Alaska cruise. Since your flight is early you can ask for the first disembarkation as well, which means that you will easily catch your 11:30 flight.

Once you are off the ship, the walk to Canada Line is fairly level, so it is not too bad to walk. I used to walk it all the time when I was working downtown as Canada Place was a nice place to go and sit and enjoy your lunch.

Thanks to all who provided advice. We will make sure we get off the ship as early as possible, take the train (and the one to the airport and not Richmond Center) - and navigate ourselves through customs and security - and be at the gate by 1030.

Cheers!

Actually the train to avoid is called "RICHMOND-BRIGHOUSE". There's no such station as "Richmond Centre"

Maybe walk across the street with your luggage to the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel - give the porter a nice tip and they will put you in a cab and send you on your way. No freeways to the airport - might have to deal with morning traffic but then probably most traffic would be coming in to the city that early in the morning.

Not a bad idea at all and another option is to just go internally into the Pan Pacific and do the same thing.
