Suggestions for Anchorage?

Does anyone have suggestions for a day of sightseeing in/around Anchorage? We will be flying in the day before our cruise; our flight gets in to Anchorage around noon. Just looking for some nice ideas of what do that afternoon, the most bang for our buck type of thing. We are on a limited budget, but don't want to spend the day at our hotel either. Thanks!

The best thing to do is to rent a car and just drive around. You can get to several places in the short time you will be there that will make your stay there so much more enjoyable. If you have the entire day and some of the following day, that's the way to go. The cost is just for the car and gas and the sight are free.

If that doesn't suit you, there are many things to do, just wandering around Anchorage. We spent a day there. We did some great shopping, we ate lunch at an outdoor cafe and just waltched the people walking around. Later, we walked to the bay, where they have a walk that goes for maybe 10 miles. It is very interersting and if the weather is nice, you might enjoy that.

We also did the Earthquake Park and an IMax movie 'Experiencing Alaska". There are also many museums to visit. The city of anchorage itself, is basically just a day or so activity, after that, you have to get to the outskirts of town. Hope this helps.

A car rental is less useful without a full day, since you are arriving at noon, you would be lucky to be on your way by 1pm. So I suggest a cab downtown to your hotel and see the downtown area. Request the Anchorage visitor guide http://www.anchorage.net good walking tour map included to consider.
