Rare OttawaJohn Posted May 6, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2012 I see the Dawn does a Boston-Kings Wharf run now, and it's the only stop and it's there for three days. Why? Is there really that much to do that you'd want to just stay there for that long? If so, why bother with the cruise, why not just go there directly? Anyone have any thoughts on this? Why did NCL choose that island to stay at, rather then any other? NOTE: I put this in the NCL section, not the Ports section, because I am more interested in why NCL did this, then talking at length about the port itself. chrisc71 Posted May 6, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 6, 2012 That is where all cruise ships go, minus HAL which is in its last season to Hamilton. The other two ports in Bermuda are not capable of taking larger cruise ships. Also staying on Bermuda, while great, is REALLY expensive. Between hotel and food you will spend a great deal more than a cruise would cost.

I would like to spend more than 3 days in Bermuda. It is a beautiful island with beautiful beaches and plenty to do. It is much less expensive to cruise than to do a land vacation. I also like the sea days to relax before getting there and to rest up from all the walking we do while there.

phoenix1181 Posted May 6, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 6, 2012 NCL has been doing this same cruise from Boston for many years. I don't believe they ever have a problem filling the ship which indicates many people are happy with the ship and/or the itinerary. And, let's not forget that from Boston other islands are a bit too far away for a 7 day cruise..................

And not only that - they have the same cruise from NYC and manage to fill that ship too! Bermuda is awesome! You might want to also ask on the Celebrity Board since the Summit does the exact same itinerary too.
Boston RN Posted May 6, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 6, 2012 It's a great itinerary for those from New England area who don't want the hassle of flying. Plus as the other poster mentioned Bermuda accomodations and restaurants are EXPENSIVE. You get off the ship hit the beach, shop sightsee and then head back for dinner and a show. Three days is plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful weather and island sights.

Lthouselady Posted May 7, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I'd rather spend three days in Bermuda than three days anywhere else on earth. No better way to get there than on a cruise ship! :D

peg013 Posted May 7, 2012 #14 Share Posted May 7, 2012 When you are in the port are the casinos open? Casino and shops are closed while in port. There is plenty to do in Bermuda to make up for it (but no casinos in Bermuda either).
Doughboy139 Posted May 7, 2012 #15 Share Posted May 7, 2012 2nd year in a row that I'm doing this cruise and I found it to be just right between the sea days and the days in port.

leekel619 Posted May 7, 2012 #17 Share Posted May 7, 2012 We love this itinerary and continue to go back year after year! (We also loved docking in St George's... even more) We just got back two days ago and already booked again for next year. It's perfect for us! We live right outside of Boston, no flying, love Bermuda, and most of all we LOVE to cruise!! Three days docked at King's Wharf is just right:) We would never fly there. Even if it wasn't over the top expensive! Cindy & Ed

LOL...You are obviously NOT a cruise addict ;) Bermuda is lovely and very much worth a long stay....getting there by ship is something a 'cruiser' enjoys. As far as why NCL stays here and not at any other port is likely because Bermuda is out there all by itself, not close to other islands like the Caribbean. The Bermuda experience is much different that visiting Caribbean islands.....they are apples/oranges. Both experiences are wonderful.
dwjoe Posted May 7, 2012 #19 Share Posted May 7, 2012 A 3 day stay in Bermuda is standard for 7 day cruises.

NOTE: I put this in the NCL section, not the Ports section, because I am more interested in why NCL did this, then talking at length about the port itself. Bermuda is a very popular destination from Boston, New York and other east coast ports and the ships which visit there fill very quickly and command premium rates. If you want to just fly to Bermuda and stay there, I suggest that you price such a trip and you will find that the cost of a cruise to that destination is a true bargain. NCL is not the only line to go to and stay in Bermuda for two or three days. Its relative proximity to major East Coast cities, its position in the Gulf stream, its beautiful beaches and good weather from May through October are among the reasons NCL does this. I am sure that Bermuda also makes it much more attractive financially for ships to remain docked there, something less likely to be the case with many other ports. More than anything, however, is the demand from the cruising public for a multi-day stay in Bermuda. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this island, you may better understand the answers to your questions.
dread_pirate Posted May 7, 2012 #21 Share Posted May 7, 2012 One of the joys of staying in one port for multiple days is the ability to come and go as you please. For 2 days, you don't have to worry about getting to the ship on time! A second joy is that you also really have time to explore the island. When you're at a port for 6 hours, how much do you really get to see or do?
Gngrasso Posted May 7, 2012 #22 Share Posted May 7, 2012 This itinerary is a perfect compromise for my wife and I. I love to cruise and she loves to hang out at the beach all day, unhurried. And I view it as a poke in the eye to the airlines. After spending almost $1k per person to fly my family to Miami to catch the Pearl I am just ecstatic that Breakaway will be based in NY. Brighton Line Posted May 7, 2012 #23 Share Posted May 7, 2012 I haven't even gone yet and after my 3 days in port on the Star I'll be back a month later for 1 day on Princess (4 day cruise). The cruise line will make its gambling money on the 3 sea days since there is no casino's on Bermuda those three days I bet collect more money in the casino then a 7 day cruise. cathhduh Posted May 7, 2012 #24 Share Posted May 7, 2012 i honestly dont think three days is even enough, three days, if you dont leave kings warf is more then enough but when you go out and explore the amazing island of bermuda, and see all the sights and towns and cities such as St. George and Hamilton then three days is just barely enough! for me it always leaves me wanting more:)
phillygirl63 Posted May 7, 2012 #25 Share Posted May 7, 2012 Myself and DH just returned from a land vacation in Bermuda. Our first time there. We flew from Newark and stayed in Hamilton for 4 nights. I am already booked on Breakaway's first cruise to Bermuda from NYC next year with some of my girlfriends. DH has always wanted to go, so I thought we would go now as a prelude to my cruise next year. We absolutely loved it! Restaurants and bars are great. I'm glad NCL stays in port for 2 nights and almost 3 full days. There is just so much to see and do, and it is nice not to have to rush back to the ship at night. I am also glad that the ship arrives on a Wednesday morning, so that my friends and I can enjoy Harbour Nights in Hamilton which is a must-do -- a lot of fun. As to why people cruise to Bermuda instead of just flying there, my experience is that it is significantly more expensive to do a land vacation in Bermuda when you factor in the cost of the flight, hotel and having to pay for all meals. I would definitely do another land vacation there, but it is more expensive than cruising.
