Food on Tundra Wilderness Tour

We are taking the Tundra Wilderness Tour on a Holland cruisetour. I think I read that the cruiseline provides a snack (but not entirely sure of that). Should we bring our own food and drinks? If so, where would we get those. We are staying at the McKinley Chalet Resort. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Tundra Wilderness Tour provides one box lunch per person. No reports back so far in 2012 on the contents. Yes, you should provide plenty of bottled water, other beverages, snack items that won't parish and even your own sandwiches. (the Subway and hotel restaurants will sell you sandwiches with the wet works packed separately).

No food or drink is sold inside Denali National Park once the buses are going down the road. You must be prepared.

It is my own excuse to munch on candy with M & M's on the top of my list, but you can buy healthy choices at several places before you get into the park.

A foldable linsulated unch pack is your friend for this.

If you have medical needs you must be prepared for what you need for food and drink.

There is a a box snack (reindeer sausage, cheese, crackers, chips) and a water per passenger. It is a long 8 hour trip. If you want something more substantial, there are 3 restaurants at the Chalet (I think), or a small deli type store where you can get sandwiches right at the Chalet.

I have read there is a Subway, but didn't venture to try and find it.

We arrived at the Chalet at around 12:30 and were scheduled for the TWT at 3:00, so we went to the restaurant and had lunch before boarding for the tour. But were gone for the dinner hour, so we did purchases sandwiches at the deli.

We returned to the Chalet at 11:30 pm, so it is a long, tiring day, after leaving Fairbanks at 7:00 that morning. But 11:30 is too late to eat anything, so went to bed and had a great buffet breakfast in the morning.

Loved the McKinley Chalet, beautiful cabins set in the pines. A little rustic but it beats tents (which I've been used to). Have a great trip!

Definitely bring your own food and water along on the Tundra Wilderness Tour.

In June 2011, we were given our small lunch box after boarding the bus and it was up to everyone on board if and when they wanted to eat. I remember there was bread and cheese in the box and I'm sure there were a few more things, but they weren't anything that I ate or remember. We were also given a bottle of water and had hot chocolate at some point during the day. We were very glad that we had brought our own food and water along with us because it is such a long day. What they provide is really more of a snack.

There is a Subway, across the road from the Denali Princess Lodge...just don't expect any $5 footlongs there...more the $10-15 footlongs, but it's middle of nowhere Alaska, so what do you expect?! There are also a few convenience type stores across the street from the lodge where you can purchase some food items. And of course there are snacks for purchase at the Princess Lodge store for a Princess type price.

Eleanor--I could not help but notice your signature. No more cruises?

Not any planned anytime soon. We did the Med in 2008 and the Pacific Northwest in 2011. Broke the bank.

Not doing any vacations at all anytime soon.

My last cruise was a disaster, do a search on NCL boards for my name. My last airplane ride was another disaster. Has made me realize maybe I want to be more in control of what I'm doing.

gymjudge55 - We stayed at the Grand Denali a few years ago. I recall ordering packed lunches for our full day in Denali, seem to recall an assortment of sandwiches, fruit, snacks, cookie/brownie and water bottles. The hotel lunches were a lot more appealing than the park offerings. Oh, no reindeer sausage in 2010. :-)

Before we boarded the Park bus, we picked up extra water and snacks at the visitor center.
