hansol1966 Posted July 12, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 12, 2012 Could nt resist the play with a previous post. After seeing the opening ceremony concept (cricket..ploughing..picnics..etc) i hope it works. As an avid Olympics supporter i cant wait and it surely is a great honour to have this event here in 15 days...i hope we do well and make all attendees to this great event welcome. T5LHR Posted July 12, 2012 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2012 I live in central London... It is more than a few road closures. Sorry to say it, but it is going to be a massive inconvenience for the people who live in central London. Not just the crowds, but even more disturbed sleep by deliveries being allowed 24/7 and during the night so they can avoid coming into London during the day time and everything else that goes with it. Yes, I work for BA, but that has no influence on my personal feelings on the games.

Salacia Posted July 13, 2012 #6 Share Posted July 13, 2012 London won the bid to hold the Olympics. I was not disappointed when NY lost the bid; Manhattan traffic and security is already over-loaded with the UN Headqarters, embassys from all over the world, film crews, multi-national protests, vists by "digintaries", etc. I wish all the best to the people of London (I share your concern), and to the participants - go for the Gold! Cheers, -S.

The pharmaceutical industry will be making quite enough money out of the Olympics as it is. :D:D:D J
Austcruiser84 Posted July 13, 2012 #8 Share Posted July 13, 2012 I'd be more than happy to have the Olympics in Sydney again. In 2000 everything ran perfectly. The homeless were looked after, public transport ran better than we ever had (or have now) and there was less traffic too (despite all the tourists). Give it to us - "best Olympics ever" as I recall the IOC chief saying.

Edited to add: Sydney 2000 Olympics organisers have said the cost of staging the Games had blown up by A$150 million (US$90 million), largely because of an increase in the number of events. quoted from http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/129559/sydney-olympics-budget-blows-out-to-a-2-6-bln

With 14 days to go it might be a little tricky getting them shifted from London, perhaps if you just took our weather for now, to be going on with? (until the last few days it was all going so well, but we all knew we'd mess* it up in the end of course) *insert your choice of word. Best wishes. Didn't end up being the big sporting investment hoped for, but we did get some quality venues out of it and as I said for people in Sydney at the time (more people left than arrived I should add) it was great. I guess that's because so many people left :) Suits me just fine. Just watching the news now and who is this nut job of a (London) Mayor speaking? He's almost as crazy as the Sydney Lord Mayor! (she wears a dog collar and wants to criss cross our city with bike lanes and reduce all driving speeds to 30km an hour).

spursdebs Posted July 13, 2012 #13 Share Posted July 13, 2012 well I am excited to be going to 4 events, I have taken the view to embrace it and enjoy it, even tho traveling will be a nightmare for me (in a wheelchair) but it always is any way !!and its only 4 weeks including the Para Olympics, but like anything you will have people happy to be hosting a great event, and you will get your detractors, same as all events. Xavias Posted July 13, 2012 #14 Share Posted July 13, 2012 The Olympics have morphed into a disgusting orgy of consumerism, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and screwing up the lives of everybody that just can't afford to have their lives screwed up by this nonsense. Anybody supporting this or going should be ashamed of themselves.

Cheers, -S. I thought NY was insane to go for it. Manhattan has loads of hotels (for visitors) and good TV production facilities, but where would they build an "olympic village" and find or build the sports facilities they'd need? You're right about traffic and security. And add mass transit to the list of overloaded resources. Good for Syndey for breaking even. I hope London doesn't lose money. I've read that other cities have lost a bundle hosting the Olympics.
hansol1966 Posted July 13, 2012 Author #18 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Yes there must be some downside to hosting the Olympics especially the prime roads through London only for Olympic use but this is possibly a once in a lifetime chance to watch this event. Sorry T5LHR but my brother worked for BA at T4 (preT5) for 15 years until ill health forced him to leave. I was on his (i think) ID80 s or ID 90s and had some great longhaul trips with BA. Nothing better to have your brother greet you off the plane (only after the duty free i promised him) and escort us through immigration....reminiscing great days with BA. ToadOfToadHall Posted July 13, 2012 #19 Share Posted July 13, 2012 I shall be at the first day's tennis, on Court 1. What a farce trying to get tickets, but finally got some on the third attempt. and just got back from The Baltics and St Petersburg - got of the QV at 9:30, 6 hours to drive home. It was the best holiday I've ever had !
Slow Foxtrot Posted July 13, 2012 #20 Share Posted July 13, 2012 Is it not the aim of the Olympic Games to bring the nations of the world together through friendly yet competitive sport? To ensure this Elysian conviviality we have a Royal Navy destroyer standing by in the River Thames, anti-aircraft missiles sited on nearby rooftops, fighter jets ready to scramble at a moment's notice, many thousands of soldiers on security duties, 5000 volt electric fences, mass Big-Brother surveillance etc - and that is only the half of it. And all of this just to watch people you've never heard of indulging in the harmless wonder of friendly sport. Does one need further proof that most of this world is raving mad? The fact that bankrupt Britain is hosting this ludicrous fiasco is simply par for the course. No doubt people with a perspicacious nature will long since have left the country. At least there's some consolation for the cruise industry. Fred Olsen's cruise ship 'Braemar' will now be providing accommodation for Olympic workers whilst the German luxury liner 'Deutschland' will house their Olympic Committee near Canary Wharf. It seems a good time to be on the other side of the world! Foxy
