Teachers

? I am just short of quitting my job and moving to Florida in order to have easy access to cruises! Haha.

Thank you advance!

That's what we did. :p. Actually we still teach but are centrally located so we are only 1 - 3 hours away from every port.

By the way, our school has a couple openings for teachers.

I am a year round track teacher so I get extended breaks throughout the year- love it! I travel in October when kids are in school. This year I'm doing a 12 night med cruise out of barcelona!

I wish our schools would go year round. Would make vacations so much easier to book if not eveyone in the world was trying to travel at the same few times of the year.

When I run the worlld, things will be different  :D

I've been a special ed teacher's aid for a couple years. Our school just went to a semi-balanced calendar and we get an entire week in October for the first time.

What we have done is try to live on just my husband's salary and everything I can earn goes into the vacation savings after paying our church tithe. I've had 3 jobs this year. I worked full time at the school. I teach piano 4 nights a week. I also worked for the local school photographer.

Get creative if you can....maybe start tutoring students or try to find a summer job that you enjoy. When you know you are working for vacation funds, it makes the job a bit more fun.

Another thing we did was get the RCCL Visa. We don't pay any interest. It took us 3 years, but we saved enough to get 1000 off our cruise. Then we turned around and saved for 3 more years and did it again. Currently saving them up again for some shipboard credit.

Another thing I have done is bid on a hotel through priceline for our arrival over night stay. I research the winning bids first and what the hotels are asking for full price and when it gets close to cruise time I start bidding on Priceline. If I win something, then I simply cancel the hotel I have booked just in case.

Good luck planning your future trips. It sure helps get through the school year to have a trip to look forward to.

We always get two days of inservice for MLK Day, so I take 3-4 day cruises around then and use personal days ( we get 3)

This year I am taking a week off and using all my personal days and two days without pay for our 7 night on the Allure. I will only miss three days with my students that way.

Incidentally, it was much cheaper to take two days without pay than it was to book the same cruise during peak travel times (which we can't travel then bc my DH works in the airlines)

Haha! Love it! To be honest upon returning back here to Pa (in the midst of a hot and dry heat wave) I really was tempted!

Thanks for the laugh. I think I could get used to palm trees and sand! :)

I am a retired teacher (Science & Agriculture) and used to teach in an old building in Daytona Beach with no A/C.

My DH and I WERE school teachers but he works at a church now and I teach piano at home and choir at church. We have a school aged kid, so we are stuck on the school schedule.

We just sucked it up last summer and this summer we did beach land in our own state. We just didnt go.

Anyone who thinks that teachers gets paid a lot is a fool

In Texas, teachers are paid a daily rate for around 187 work days for the year. That amount is devided by 12 if the teacher decideds(which we did) so the teacher can have money all year. The summer is not a paid vacation. It is money already earned from the previous years salary

arrrgh  ! I am a teacher assistant in a special ed. school ( Autism to muliple handicapped). So I am not a teacher but I do the same work with thank God less paper work...well lots of data taking but no report cards or testing...lol. And also only a quarter of the pay. Teacher's in our school only make an average of 48,000. So not so high paying . As far as cruiseing in March we only have one day off and the first 2 days in April (with the weekend it is still only 5 days )so that wouldn't really work. Plus we live in South Jersey so we have to pay to fly into Florida.

So if we want to cruise it is late june threw August.

Guess if I want to have cheaper rates and be able to do a TA or even Southern Caribbean I'll just have to wait another 20 years  .

TA/IA/AT- You're a teacher! :) You may not get paid like a teacher, but in my eyes you surely are! :)

You seem to be in the same boat (HA-HA) as us. Our biggest issue is that we need to fly everywhere, my family has a house in Florida so at least we have a place to stay but it still costs a great deal of money to just fly, we typically fly out of Philly and we're about an hour and a half north so that extends our travel day. With purchasing a new house, just getting married, and all the other expenses of being an adult (UGH) I am tempted to give up manicures and dunkin donuts iced coffees for a year in order to get on that ship quicker! Currently I am researching doing the same cruise we just did a few weeks ago next June. We need to be down in Florida for a wedding next June so I figured we need to at least make it an extended vacation (plus 1 year anniversary.) :)

We are able to extend our pay through the summer so that is not a problem.

Thank you about clearing up the finances of teaching! I probably should have preluded this topic by saying my husband and I both have numerous jobs as basically supplmental incomes (or as we like to say, to have a life.) (Husband-full time teacher, part time therapist for Autistic children, wrestling coach) (Myself-full time teacher, part time therapist for Autistic children as well, Early Intervention specialist for little kiddos under the age of 3 with disabilities, as well waitress one night a week)

Teaching is definitley not where the money is at! Haha.

I have been teaching in the same school for 24 years. Last year we got A/C and it is wonderful.

For many years, I taught summer school for a few weeks in the summer, worked one or two nights in our extended day program, and taught my own after school science. This helped to pay for my kids to go to Catholic high school. That paid off because my oldest got a full scholarship to college.

I buy everything with coupons. Wish they had coupons for cruises.

We get the senior discount on almost every cruise and sometimes the resident discount.

We also taught. The New Year's cruises were always a great thing. I can't even tell you how many times we went at that time. Now that we are retired we can go in January. It may cost more to go at New Years, but think about the free champaign at midnight. - Seriously, it's a great time to cruise because everyone is in a holiday mood.

Bayonne, NJ

Baltimore, MD

I am a teacher as well. We drive to the ports if we can. We also save money by continuing to look for deals, booking early, and limiting our spending on board. We do not drink much, stick to the main dinning room, gamble very little, and look for the best value for tours of islands. Many times we can explore on our own with a good tour book and a means of transportation. We will join with other families/couples and strike a deal with a cab driver. You can get a great tour or to a popular spot on the island for much less than a ship tour. Just do your homework to make sure it is safe.

Hi! Taught for 35 years and now have the priviledge of sailing when I wish. While teaching we did summer cruises out of Bayonne, New York, and Baltimore. Next week my husband and I will be sailing out of Bayonne to Bermuda on Celebrity's Summit. Only booked on June 29 and I got a teacher's discount of $200 and I booked a guranteed interior for $599 plus taxes. We will take the bus out of Allentown for $53 a person that will take us right to the pier. This is cheaper than driving and parking in Bayonne. We can do this cheaper than the Jersey Shore or Ocean City, MD. Celebrity's teacher discount is still in effect so check their website for details. Also there were some terrific rates for Europe and Alaska cruises this summer. So there are options for a limited vacation schedule. I'll have a drink for you while onboard.

Oh, Lord. It is SUCH a huge problem at my school. We had to actually institute a policy that is reiterated multiple times a year by the superintendent and principals, and parents still raise a stink because we won't supply two weeks of work and lesson plans before the trip. I honestly think that there is some kind of competition going on, because the trips are getting more and more extravagant (kids aren't being pulled out just to go to Disney any more... now it's China, Brazil, Kenya, etc...). Oy, vey!

But thanks to the poster above who said that Celebrity offered teacher discounts. I'm heading to their site right now... :)

RC does have coupons. They are called C&A certificates, and new ones are issued every three months. You can view them on the C&A page of the RC website.

Where can you find teacher discounts on Celebrity? I can't seem to see them. TIA :)

Go to there home page. Click on specials and it is listed there. Hope you can use it. Money off cruises is always great. We're off to Bermuda on the Summit on Sunday and for a 6-9 day cruise we got $200 off the price of our cruise using the teacher discount.

Glad this thread is still up. I mean to reply earlier.

My DW work in a school as well. So we are at the mercy of the schedule when it comes to vacation time. However we found if we are lucky, the state where the port is located takes their holidays at different times than others. This happens more often at Christmas than March break. However, last year our break was for two weeks after Christmas, whereas the state of Florida was one week before and one week after. So we booked a cruise once the people from the home state were back to school and this cut down on numbers of kids in the crowd considerably.

This will be about as off topic as you can get but would like to convey this thought to you and all the teachers.

As a past serving school board president I got to see and hear why teachers and teaching as a profession makes you guys heroes in my mind. The reasons are pretty obvious and I know it can be thankless at times but from one parent and board member, Thank You.
