CCL advance tipping policy is hogwash

DCL is approx $12 a day per person

RCL is approx $18.20 a day per person

Princess Cruise lines is approx $11.50 a day per person

Celebrity Cruise Lines is approx $11.50 a day per person

The daily amounts below have been calculated with this in mind. For new bookings that set sail on or after July 1, 2011, the suggested gratuities are:

Waiter: $3.75 USD a day per guest

Assistant Waiter: $2.15 USD a day per guest

Head Waiter: $.75 USD a day per guest

Stateroom Attendant/

Other Housekeeping Services: $5.00 USD a day per guest

Suite Attendant/

Other Housekeeping Services: $7.25 USD a day per guest

Note that one either tips the Stateroom Attendant or the Suite Attendant....not both. That brings RCCL tip on a standard cabin to $11.65.

There are a bunch of cheapskates that need to justify why they are cheapskates.

If you don't tip you are a cheapskate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhh....could be foreigners too because in many countries tipping is not the norm and is seen as making oneself seem superior to another and is considered an insult....:)

$ 2.00 USD - Per Day Alternative Services: distributed to kitchen, entertainment, guest services and other hotel staff members.

^^ from carnival. Kitchen and other hotel staff would be the dishwashers and laundry workers.

When I tip(generously) I want to make sure the money is placed directly in the hands of those who deserve it. When you blindly hand over your so called tip money to CCL who knows what happens to it. Maybe it all gets distributed as advertised, maybe not.

I'm sure you just don't get it. You tip to get better service, no doubt that's why you act like Mr. Gotbucks, but at the end steward is stiffed, dining room wait staff, etc. because "I tip generously", but not what was suggested etc.

If you tipped the Mr Gotbucks IN ADDITION, and at the end of the cruise gave those that served you what was suggested, then, hey no problem, but the way you posted you want to be seen as the big spender so the crew kisses your bottom and then they find out, oops all we got was a bunch of sh--!

Somehow, I think you are all show, no go, but hey, what am I but a sheep?

Part of me feels this custom comes from the rich not the poor

Let's make it simple for the sheep. The sheep will meekly pay the autotip which amounts to $161 per couple on a 7 nighter. The wise cruisers, like us, will cancel the tips and pay them out in cash to the deserving service providers. Let's see how this might work.

1) First day the room attendant gets $20 shoved in his/her hand(can't you just picture the grin of appreciation?)

2) Our favorite bartender at our favorite bar gets $20 also up front to look after us for the cruise

3) $40 gets spread out to the dining room wait staff first night

4) A few fivers get given out to the pool waiters for good service(let's say a total of $20

5) A few fivers get spread out to the casino waiters for good service(let's say another $20)

That brings our tip total to $120 leaving at least another $40 to hand out to other deserving crew members. Now who do you think is going to have better service during the cruise? Us or the mindless sheep who blindly go along with CCL and hope their auto tips get distributed as advertised. Come on people........wake up and smell the coffee!!

Okay, you started with a trite cliche and ended with a trite cliche, both wrapped around a staggeringly overused philosophy about tipping (wow, we haven't heard those spectacular concepts put into text over and over and over again!)

Powerfully convincing, to say the least. You get an "A" for building something out of nothing. On substance? Eh, not so good. This sounds like a manifesto best presented with crayons on yellow construction paper.

Larkz -Great post but too many 4-syllable words... most of what you wrote will go over his head.

I am really puzzled by comments about CCL not paying its employees living wages and how unfair and sad it is. Its seems condescending, sort of an implication that the staff aren't smart enough to see they are being "taken advantage of". How arrogant to think they don't know exactly what the benefits and sacrifices are. These aren't children, they are fully grown and intelligent human beings who have made a choice in their lives. Do those of you who "pity" them think you are so much smarter or better educated and they need you to be their advocates? I sincerely believe anyone who has provided me service in the dining areas or my cabin are every bit as intelligent as I am and understand their situation better than any of us do. They should be respected as such, and yes, tipped for their hard work.

I will get better service, because my stateroom person, waiter, and assistant waiter will see that you are a tip removing douchebag and I am not, becuase they are told when someone removes tips. That is well documentd.

Wow, how many accounts on CC do you have H82seeyoutip?

Does h82 really have multiple accounts? Isn't that against the rules?

So are many things that are regulary done, such as mentioning how you booked....yep, read the rules, you cant even MENTION that you like a PVP or a TA, even if you dont use their names, but that is done all the time.

H82seeyoutip has been accused of having many sock puppet accounts, mostly because ih8tippers has been put on ignore by so many people....just look at the threads where there is one person agreeing with him, and they sound pretty similar and are posting right after eachother. Not enough for a conviction, just a hunch.

I always prepay the gratuities. I just consider is part of the expenses for cruising. It's no different to me than paying tips to those that clean the room or those waiters/waitresses on a land-based vacation. I know the waiters/waitresses have a low base pay and depend upon tips to supplement this to even bring them up to minimum wage. In my opinion, there is no difference between tipping those on a cruise and tipping those on a land-based vacation.

Wrong. Taxes are not a % of the cruise cost. They are a fixed cost based on that particular cruise. You pay the same amount whether you have an inside cabin or a suite.

taxes on a 7night cruise out of NOla for 4 people are $274 whether you go steerage or grand suite.

you should certainly review the purpose of tipping.

tipping should ONLY be extended to those in the service industry that you DO come in contact with.

I often agree with you because you sometimes make sense, but it just goes over the head of a large number of people because they lack comprehension skills. I never understood just how poor comprehension skills were in people until I was put in charge of the employment applications.

H8's sock puppetry is pretty transparent, as is the vitriole he (or she?) spews at people who make different choices that s/he does. Maybe I am just too nice of a person, so I will gladly accept that his caustic remarks go over my head, and just make him sound like a jerk. Or it could be my years of working in a jail with criminals, I know what evil, manipulative, downright nasty people sound like.

And with the baseless excuses you've given not to autopay, my OPINION is that there is $160 going in your pocket and your family can't figure out why the service staff sneers at them everyday.

Stop the fantasy!
