When to change tips os S&S?

I am a firm believer of tipping those who help you directly. I would rather give my server and my room steward cash for everyday things like cleaning the room and serving dinner. I do not feel obligated to tip others that I never see and would rather tip my face to face people more than what they get through my auto tips. I know some of you may do it differently and I respect that. However, this is my choice and I ask you to respect it as well. Having said that, when is the best time to get the auto tips removed from your account? Embarkation day or wait until the last night?

To each his own. Do it as soon as you can, preferably upon boarding the ship.

I honestly have no problem with this point of view, but if you never tipped before I service is performed, wouldnt you be at guest services the last night of the cruise removing tips? You havent actually paid anything on your Sign and Sail account until it is settled the last morning of the cruise and the charge goes onto your credit card. Why would someone remove it the first day? Those are the cheap bastards most of us are refering to in this thread.

And for the record, if I had poor service, I would remove tips in a heartbeat, I just have never had the scenario yet, and I would only remove the person who gave me the bad service.

I cant say for sure when I will remove it, I guess when ever I am walking by guest services and there is no line, might be the first day, the 4th day or the last night to me it makes no difference. If you plan to remove and not give any tip then o well that's up to you, but this forum is not the place to say so :)

I would love to see some hard data on how many actually screw the staff on their tips. All we have on here in conjecture on second hand rumor.

BTW, this forum IS the place to say so! That is the whole point....

I mean this in a sincerity, not to stir poo up...there are wide spread reports of staff finding out who removes tips. I might mention it to my cabin steward and dining staff that you would be taking care of them at the end of the week. Would they serve you any differently if you didnt? Probably not. But it couldnt hurt to mention it to them. Just MHO.

AHhahahahhaha, so now you believe the brand ambassador? This is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time on CC, you are quoting John Heald to bolster an argument. You, H8, his biggest fan now?

.

actually, i quoted a former host on this board.

Although I have never been a waitress, I do have friends that were. To my understanding, they have each shared the tips they earn with the bus boys and such. So although we may not see who else gets a portion of the tips behind the scene, I would rather autotip and make sure that I don't miss anyone getting a tip or a portion of the tip. For exceptional service, I just give them extra.

With that said, if you are still going to remove the autotip, then you should probably wait until midway through your cruise to do it. Or perhaps have your TA do it, if possible.

I live in the US of A though.. and as such I will adhere to their customs and not stiff the help.

Ill find another way to save money .. besides taking it out of someone else's tips. Ill drink generic coke zero, Ill buy a less expensive brand of something else.. but I would stiff the help.

shame on you for stiffing the help.

still, cheap does not preclude non tipping.

So, not that anyone asked me personally but here is my story.

I would NEVER remove the auto tips. I figure it's part of my cruise price and the people that work in the service positions on cruise ships are doing a job that I would never be able to nor want to do. It's little enough $$ that I can certainly afford to give them.

We also always give envelopes at the end of the cruise to folks that made our vacation special. This includes the head server, the asst server, beverage person, room stewards and assts etc. I've tipped the girl who made my omelet with a smile each day, the maitre'd when he moved our table on request etc.

But, on the last cruise, the asst server was terrible. Not just one night but all week. We are VERY low maintenance people and are always appreciative of what people do for us. She was unpleasant, unhappy, did not greet us or even speak to us and did not provide even basic service. On the last night, we very quietly slipped the head server his envelopes (there were 3 couples) so not to make him uncomfortable. Apparently, the asst server found out that the head server got envelopes because she magically appeared and starting smiling and making small talk with us. She hadn't said so much as "good evening" to us once all week. She almost held one us us hostage because she wouldn't allow the person to move her chair back to get up from the table when we were ready to leave. We did not feel guilty at all for not tipping her extra. She got her basic tip through the auto tips and we feel that's all she deserved.

I guess my point is that the auto tips should be considered as "part of the fare" and staff that go that bit "extra", certainly deserve a little extra something!

That is exactly what we do. I would never remove the auto tips as we too consider it part of the cruise cost and the minimum we would tip. We always get envelopes and then give extra to those that went over and above, which ia almost all of them. We are sure to tell them it is extra for great service. A couple of our cruises we have also given something to the casino host.

But you see, it really IS part of the cruise price! I don't care about this very insignificant amount of money, really! But to call it a "tip" does a disservice to the folks who really DO earn a TRUE TIP.

Give credit where credit is due. Nothing more, nothing less.

ETA: and to suggest that these folks will "spit in your food" or "keester your toothbrush" is nothing but a shakedown. If this does indeed happen, I suggest we find a different vacation venue where things like this do not happen.

Probably not. These folks are not tipped employees. They receive a salary. Stewards and servers do not.

Do you tip the cooks and dishwashers in land based restaurants? Do you tip the laundry folks in hotels?

Actually you do. Most of the servers in restaurants share their tips with the bus boys and kitchen staff.

you really think so? would you take that job if the person hiring you told you your tips went to kitchen staff? he would see my back pretty quickly.
