How about a non-smoking policy?

I know...a heated issue, and just to say, I know a week or longer is a stretch for smokers. Yet there are alternatives to using during the cruise (patches?)

But, it's not just the second hand smoke and yes, you do get it walking past the smoking areas...awful, my kids noticed everytime. It is also:

the fire hazard is scary. Does anyone remember when smoking was allowed on AIRPLANES? Kind of unthinkable today. It is obviously not happening left and right that fires break out at sea on cruise ships from cigarettes, but it is still increasing the risk of something that would be severe at sea.

SO many venues are accepting the reality of smoking (just watch the grandson of RJ Reynolds, he is campaining all over to...as he says...put his family on the "right side" of tobacco by eliminating its use) and no longer allowing it to happen in public places, or even outside certain places. Our hospital doesn't allow smoking on any of its outside grounds now. Employees who smoke must walk off property to have their smoke. That says alot.

What solutions could be offered for someone who is addicted, and can't go the week without a smoke? It is truly so difficult to quit once you're a smoker, even if you really want to do it. But since so many more people do not smoke and the smoke IS harmful to others and a danger overall, what suggestions does anyone have?

I didn't see a problem on the Disney ships with non-smoking policy.their ships are fully booked all the time.

Anyway, it was an unpleasant part of our trip and if someone smoked we could smell it on our balcony streaming by. Happened at least once a day. Not welcome.

Curious what others think about it.

I was just on the Disney Magic out of New York. You are allowed to smoke on your balcony and there is a smoking section on the pool deck. Exact same policy as on NCL. Only difference is that there is no casino on Disney.

What Disney ship Non-smoking policy are you referring to?

You know, it won't be long. Just a few more years. And folks will seriously regret pushing for a non-smoking policy.

I'm a non-smoker. And I don't really like smoking. But the thing is, this is just the first step in eliminating our freedoms. We're already well along the way to taking away our rights to privacy and to do as we choose.

Employers are starting to test for nicotine and refuse to hire smokers. Good you think? But should anyone else have a say in what we legally do in our private lives?

As I said, this is just the first step. The government, our employers, and the insurance companies already want to monitor our smoking, our eating, our drinking, and our physical activity. Some will argue that this is good. And taking steps to be healthy is. But America was founded on freedom. This is the exact opposite. It is monitoring what we do on our own time and taking away our freedom.

This is your employer and you neighbor dictating what you do or don't do. And this is just the first step. So for those who say this is a good thing, be careful what you wish for. Because the next step will be telling you that you can't do something you choose that is entirely legal. The company I work for wants to dictate that we don't smoke, don't weight too much, don't have high blood pressure or cholesterol. Ummm, most of you cruising have a problem with at least one of these. So you ARE next. Whether you like it or not.

If you don't want your rights taken away, don't take away someone else's.

America is becoming the new communist country. There is no more freedom once you start telling people what you can or can't do. This should be an issue of common courtesy, but it is moving well beyond that.

Think I'm crazy? Take a look at what is happening in healthcare! Which by the way, we have one of the most expensive yet least effective health care systems of industrialized nations. We should be begging for real healthcare reform. By not doing so, the direction we're heading is one people will like even less than what other countries are doing. It's already in motion because our employers and health insurance companies are doing it despite what you may think. If you don't think so, give it a couple years and see the changes that are taking place in your employer provided insurance. They are looking for excuses to change it or eliminate it! And it will happen regardless of who wins the election. And most folks are being complacent and allowing it. No I'm not paranoid. But most folks are just complacent or looking to dictate what other do without realizing the impact it will have on them.

Why not go all the way and propose a non-alcohol ship as well? For over a decade, it was once illegal to serve alcoholic drinks in America.

Or take a different tack, designate all smoking ships to go along with your all non smoking ships. If the all smoking ship sailed the itinerary you wanted to sail, you'll be breathing in smoke everywhere on the ship if you booked it. I bet you'll find someone smoking secretly on that all non-smoking ships as well.

Why is it impossible for some to share a ship with everyone, including smokers?

I'm a non-smoker who hates secondhand smoke but I don't want smoking banned. I would just like it confined to designated areas.

Why? Here's my logic:

NCL is a profitable company, which is a good thing. NCL generally charges less for a similar destination/duration cruise than say Disney. NCL is able to charge less for a base cruise fare because it makes up for the lower base fare by generating significant revenue in the casino and beverage departments. Many heavy gamblers and drinkers are also smokers (Of course not all heavy gamblers or drinkers are smokers and not all smokers are drinkers and gamblers, but if you have an addictive personality you just may smoke, gamble and drink . . . a lot). NCL does not need to alienate the smoker and cause them to go to another cruise line.

Without the drinkers and gamblers, NCL would have to charge considerably more for a cruise.

Therefore, I salute the drinkers, gamblers and smokers who are working the casino and bar trenches selflessly making the base fair of an NCL cruise cheaper for the rest of us!

First let me say I smoked for years, and reformed smokers are generally the biggest critics. That said no smoking should not be banned on cruise ships. A smoker has just as many rights as I do to enjoy his or her vacation. So if you know there is a smoking area avoid it. I don't go to the casino at night because of the heavy smoke, but I enjoy the casino in the AM. Again though I am happy with the Princess Lines new policy of no smoking on your balcony because now my husband can enjoy sitting out there with me. It only bothered me once but he was a chain smoker and told the lady above to shut up and go inside if it bothered her. Again the exception to the rule.

Just use common sense, be tolerent, and smokers be considerate and smoke in allowed areas. We ALL paid our fares and should enjoy our vacation.

jame g has some valid points by the way, at least we can critize our govement officials and not go to jail :).

Have a great day, Laura

Just do a search and you will find many smoking threads to read ..let's not rehash an issue that already has a lot of threads There is currently an active thread already on this issue. There will always be smokers vs non smokers that will never change.
