How "generous" are your tips?

The duscussion is about how "generous" are your tips. Then you suggested that bribes (pre-tipping) would lead to preferential treatment, and also suggested over-tipping would give excellent service.

The level of service you provide should not be based on how much someone tips. You will loose out on tips doing so.

See how far that gets you working at a crowded bar, one person tips you $50, so you ignore the 20 other customers standing at the bar as soon as big spender walks up for another round.

Im that guy that gives a $50.You know why those other 20 people will leave $1

Im never thirsty :)

After I re read.Let me explain my thoughts ,you will not understand but I will try

I walk into a bar that has 2 bartenders and 20 people waiting for a drink.I wait my turn and get a drink and tip nice not $50 maybe a $10.Would you as a bartender not remember me in hopes of more $10 bills?

That $10 will get me better and faster service any day of the week

In addition to the auto tips, I give over $100 between the room steward, MDR workers, various servers on the ship, and excursion guides who make my vacation so pleasurable.

Otherwise extremely frugal -- I don't spend anything on the ship except for a soda card -- I consider it an honor to reward people for hard work.

We have been on 5 Carnival cruises and I will agree the service has defintely gone down hill the last 2 years/cruises. However, in my experience you get a little better service if you give a little extra tip. We give $20 to the room steward on the 1st full day of the cruise - usually in the afternoon/evening when we run into them in the hall. $10 to his/her assistance.

Bartenders/Wait Staff - We try to find the most fun, outgoing waiter/waitress on the lido deck and then each of us 3 couples gives him/her $20 through-out the course of the day. They are "johnny on the spot" with refills all week long. Then when you bump into them later at the casino or the comedy show they come to you 1st and most often. They also give you the occasional free pop or bottle of water. Dinner wait staff vaires per couple but generally its $20 for head waiter and $10 for assistant. We have only given once, $10 per couple to the mat ra di (sp) when he actually stopped by our table twice during the week and wished 1 couple a happy anniversary personally and sang to them. The other 4 cruises we never even laid eyes on the guy till he had his hand out the final night.

Call me crazy but it gives me "warm and fuzzies" when we surprise someone with a nice big tip.

Trust me, sir, I understand completely. You on the other hand, don't see how your service standards will loose money for you.

Cheers!

Neither am I. As the $1 tipper, they are usually asking me if I want another before I'm finished. You OTOH sound like a bad bartender, who are limiting your tips based on your techniques. I'm sure you also wish you has 20 people waiting for your attention as you're playing face recognition.

If the cruise line tells me that I have to pay $980 per person for our cabin, I don't give them extra just because they smiled at me. If they tell me I have to pay $11.50 per person per day for gratuities, I don't give them extra just because they smiled at me.

Out of six cruises, only once did we ever come across a bar waiter that we gave extra to. He went out of his way in doing his job.

Most will say I tip to much, however I plan on giving $100 each to the room steward, headwaiter and matar d. Addtionaly will give some amount to those who go out of their way for us. And will adujust the $100 down for poor service. It seams like alot but working in a service industry myself, I know how hard these people work for how little. Oh and I make sure if we are using Carnival shuttle to/from port to tip the driver $50. Can't help it, I drive a tour bus, trust me most of these drivers get paid nowhere near what we should. Average hourly pay is $18.50/hour. And most times on excursions if you tip the escort the driver sees none of it.

One job for 20 years I think that speaks for itself:)

I guess the only good bartenders are the ones who steal from the company they work for and give you free drinks

Leave ALL the automatic tips on (no matter what). . . tip EXTRA for "above and beyond" service with bar keeps and waiters.

Make my own bed, hang up and put away all my clothes, clean up my own bathroom and keep the entire cabin in spotless ORDER. Part of my upbringing I suppose. Ideally when the stewards hit my cabin its, hopefully, like a "DAY OFF" to them.:)

I give $1.00 per drink to the bartender or waiter. I also tip $1.00 per drink to the gal at the coffee bar. At the beginning of the cruise I give the room steward $20 and show him/her my collapsable cooler and ask that it be filled with ice daily. If they do this, at the end of the cruise they get an extra $50 plus. In between if they do anything above and beyond, I will tip at that time also. Room service gets between $2 & $5 depending on how large the order is. At the end of the cruise the MDR waiter gets $50 plus, and his assistants get $20 plus.

My family has owned restaurants all their lives, and my husband is a limo owner/driver, therefore, we know how hard "service" people work and all the "stuff" they put up with day after day. When a job is well done, I like to acknowledge it. This is above and beyond the prepaid gratuities.

I must be one lucky chap that all these bartenders have put their jobs on the line over the past 35 years just to give me free drinks for every one of two I buy.

What I do miss is that free case of Mallomars I used to get every September from NBC.

Have been drinking for 35 years im sure you know an owner or two.

Next time you go in ask one what their comping policy is? Or go into any bar and ask the manager if they have the buy 2 get one free drink special.

Im sure the managers and bar owners would love to give away 33% of revenue

Those bartenders are thieves

Only if I could time travel. But I don't think I've been in the same bar twice in at least 12 years.

And I know what their comping policy is as soon as they comp, which is never more than the third drink.

I tip the room steward $20 when we board. That is because I request...A sharps box for my husband..who does daily tests for diabetes...ice...and often the bed seperated if small room...together if OV or Balcony. I also like having my cabin made up when we leave in the morning. We get up early..put the sign out that we request service..and then avoid the cabin for a few hours. Usually works like a charm.and if it does we tip another $20. All of those things..Sharps box...ice daily..clean cabin early..matter to us. It is worth showing that we appreciate the effort. I have traveled with people who did not tip extra at all..and they received the same excellent service. ditto with folks who tipped lots more. I just do it to say Thank you for making this week.....restful and pleasant. Do not feel obliged.

I tip $3 when coffee or continental breakfast is delivered. Seldom order RS outside of that.I take $30 in ones..roll them in a sock..so they are close at hand in the morning for coffee..what is left at the end of the cruise...I add to the tips to the dinner staff.

We just always get the best Dinner service. The nicest people. Considerate. Sweet. We have never had a loser.. So we tip them extra...again..no..we don't have too..It is saying..thank you for making this week........special for us.

Never tip extra for drinks. Don't drink much.

IRRITATION.....THE 'RQUIRED' TIP on tours....the good ones...happy to do it. The ones who cannot be understood..who are rude ( Puerto Rico)...I hate slipping that money into their hand. But I do. Get mad a myself.

All in all.......................We are extremely lucky in the people who have worked with us on Carnival.

If you haven't been to the same bar twice in 12 years, how would know if a bartender has been fired or not? Just curious

Google is your friend.. from the Urban Dictionary

buyback

Usually only seen in small to mid-sized bars, when a bartender gives a patron a drink "on the house". This usually occurs after the patron purchases three or more drinks. It keeps the patron buying drinks and gives them satisfaction.

Man #1: Sweet! I just got a free drink!

Man #2: Finally a buy back! Let's get some more shots and beer!

Man #1: I love this bar...
