We are cruising out of New York....going a few days early to do some sight-seeing.

 

We would like to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty....but we are going with someone who is deathly afraid of the ferry ride !

 

Can anyone who might have done this trip tell me approximately how long the ferry ride is.....and is it a choppy ride? He is afraid of getting sea sick.

 

Also....would anyone know of a good jazz club? We are staying in the midtown Manhatten area.

From The Battery, I would estimate the ride as 20-25 minutes. I've never found it to be a choppy ride, even on a day that had less-than-stellar weather.

The ferry ride isn't that bad at all! I took the Ferry to the Statute and Ellis Island from the New Jersey side. There is an outdoor deck with seats and standing or you can sit inside away from the elements. There's a refreshment stand and bathrooms on board. The ride is very smooth!

I am prone to motion sickness, and didn't have any symptoms at all. Do not miss it. It's part of the New York experience!

My DH gets seasick on smallcrafts and has never had a problem on the ferry. It is one of our favorite things to do in NYC! He has no problems on a big ship.

Yes, this person is going on the cruise....but he seems to be ok on the big ships......always takes Bonine. He's afraid the ferry is going to be a small bouncy boat and that is hard for him to handle.

I think we will be leaving from Battery Park.

We are getting the tickets online today.

 

I'm hoping he will believe the answers that the ride isn't too

choppy !!! ;)

It's definitely not a small boat and a choppy ride. I hope he has a good time. It's definitely a great experience to go to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Don't miss it!

Tell him to put on his big boy pants and get on the ferry. The ride from the NJ side is very short. The Hudson river is pretty calm. No need to panic.

Before you go ... you will need tickets to the statute. You can get them online.

The crown is opening up soon - after a year of rehabilitation. Definitely get crown access when you book!

Your in the upper NY bay, the worse thing is for the Captain of the Ferry and the currents around Manhattan Island (that's why the Staten Island Ferry always "rubs" against the pilings. You won't feel it on the Ferry.

 

There should be no problem with the ferry to SOL or Ellis island, enjoy.

The ferry's are far from small. I've done the ride to Ellis and the statue from the NJ side, and I've taken the ferry into Manhattan many a time. I've never felt chop at all - even in the middle of winter on a windy day.
